From the margins to the center: Transforming cardiovascular care for women.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death among women worldwide, with significant disparities in prevalence, outcomes, and care. Despite these alarming statistics, research on women's heart health remains underfunded and poorly prioritized, due in part to the historic exclusion of women from clinical trials and biomedical research. This editorial will highlight the scope of CVD in women, explore sex- and gender-specific risk factors such as gestational diabetes, early menopause, and psychosocial stress, and underscore barriers to quality care including implicit bias and s

The need for critical and intersectional approaches to equity efforts in postgraduate medical education: A critical narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Racialised trainees in Canada and the USA continue to disproportionately experience discrimination and harassment in learning environments despite equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) reform efforts. Using critical approaches to understand what problems have been conceptualised and operationalised as EDI issues within postgraduate medical education (PGME) is important to inform ongoing learning environment reform in resident training. METHODS: We conducted a critical narrative review of EDI literature from 2009-2022 using critical race theory (CRT) and the concept of intersectio

"I Know So Many Women That Have the Same Story as Mine": Exploring How the Increase of Benzodiazepines in the Unregulated Drug Supply Shapes Experiences of Gender-Based Violence Among Women and Gender Minorities in Vancouver, BC.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines have become increasingly prevalent in the unregulated drug supply in Canada. Benzodiazepines are regularly prescribed as anxiety or sleep aids, and typically have strong sedative effects. Despite the influx of benzodiazepines in the unregulated drug supply, the gendered impacts of this change have not been evaluated. To address this gap, our aim was to explore how the increase of benzodiazepines in the unregulated drug supply shaped experiences of gender-based violence (GBV) among women and gender minorities who experience intersecting modes of criminalization in Va

A narrative review of nursing in Saudi Arabia: prospects for improving social determinants of health for the female workforce.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses represent the backbone of global healthcare systems where women typically deliver care and men lead. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) highly relies on foreign female nurses despite Saudisation policies designed to localize its workforce. Yet, in the context of an ambitious 2016-30 national health transformation program to modernize public health in a high-income and rapidly developing country, intersectional inequalities persist for migrant and local nurses in KSA. There are challenges in the specialisms of palliative and end-of-life care where there is a weak public and

Gender distribution in membership, leadership, and conference participation in the Japanese Society for Hypothalamic and Pituitary Tumors.

Gender equity has become an important issue in academic medicine, but data on gender distribution in subspecialty medical societies remain limited. We analyzed gender distribution in membership, leadership positions, and conference participation in the Japanese Society for Hypothalamic and Pituitary Tumors (JSHPT). Membership data as of March 2025 (n = 860) were examined, and gender distribution among speakers and session chairs at the 36th Annual Meeting of the JSHPT was evaluated using the publicly available abstract book. Among all members, 128 (14.9%) were women. Women accounted for 6.6% o

Caregiver parenting and gender attitudes: Associations with violence against adolescent girls in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Violence against adolescent girls occurs at alarmingly high rates in conflict-affected settings, in part due to their increased vulnerability from their age and gender. However, humanitarian programming efforts have historically focused either on child abuse prevention or intimate partner violence prevention and have not fully addressed the specific needs of adolescent girls, including engagement of caregivers to reduce risk of violence against adolescent girls. Thus, the objectives of this analysis are to examine the whether gendered and parental attitudes of caregivers in South Kivu, Democra

Health in Kerala: exploring achievements and remaining challenges of health systems reform using an equity lens.

BACKGROUND: The southern Indian state of Kerala is often regarded as a global model for its impressive health outcomes at a low cost. While the state consistently invests in healthcare and showcases remarkable health indicators, disparities persist, particularly among underserved populations who experience poorer health outcomes. This special issue focuses on research work that examines health equity in the region. METHODS: Following an open call for the collection featuring research studies focusing on health equity in Kerala in 2022, we received 29 submissions; four editors handled the subm

Access to liver transplantation in women: progress and challenges.

Access to liver transplantation among women remains limited due to biological and sociocultural factors. Differences in height, muscle mass, and renal function estimation significantly affect prioritization, particularly under the classic Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD). Although the implementation of MELD 3.0 has reduced some disparities, structural biases persist, especially regarding exception points and graft size compatibility. Newer models such as MELD-GRAIL-Na and GEMA-Na, along with surgical strategies like split-liver and pediatric donation, offer promising alternatives. The

Sociopolitical Threats Heighten Minority Stress for Current Sexual and Gender Minority Public Health Trainees in the United States.

The current U.S. sociopolitical climate-marked by recent targeted anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) legislation and executive orders (i.e., sociopolitical stressors)-including those focused on antidiversity, equity, and inclusion-leads to heightened minority stress among current LGBTQ+ public health trainees, threatening their well-being and career trajectories. Macro-level (distal) stressors, such as discriminatory funding cuts, institutional censorship, and sociopolitical hostility interact with proximal stressors (i.e., expectatio

Gender-Based Cyberviolence Prevention in European Secondary Education: A Scoping Review on the Intersection Between Comprehensive Sexuality Education and Digital Literacy.

BACKGROUND: The increasing pervasiveness of digital technologies in adolescent life has heightened concerns about gender-based cyberviolence, especially toward girls, LGBTQI+ youth, and other marginalized groups. While European Union (EU) policy, including Directive (EU) 2024/1385, recognizes these harms, formal education systems in EU Member States lack integrated strategies that connect Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and Digital Literacy (DL). METHODS: This scoping review explores how academic research addresses this intersection in secondary education, drawing on 14 peer-reviewed

Cycles of Change: Understanding Corporate Employees' Perceptions of Menstrual Leave in Delhi NCR.

Menstrual health and hygiene management has emerged as a critical concern in workplace equity and occupational health discourse, yet policies such as menstrual leave remain contested in India. The study explores the perceptions of corporate employees in Delhi NCR on menstrual leave policy. A descriptive study was conducted with 50 corporate employees (40 women, 10 men) in Delhi NCR, selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data were gathered using gender-specific semistructured interviews and analyzed through frequency distributions and thematic analysis. Findings suggest varying leve

The Potential Role of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Programs in Reducing Teen Dating Violence and Intimate Partner Violence.

Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are growing fields that provide job stability, financial security, and health prosperity for professionals in these fields. Unfortunately, females are underrepresented in STEM, which is potentially both a consequence and precipitant of gender inequity in the United States. In addition to the financial and health benefits, increasing the number of girls and women in STEM fields may also indirectly prevent and/or reduce teen dating violence and intimate partner violence by: (1) increasing women's financial independence, thereby reducing dependenc

Listening to the voices of Guatemalan community leaders: a participatory approach to identifying priorities to curtail HIV within transgender communities.

Transgender (trans) communities in Guatemala are severely and disproportionately affected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with overall HIV prevention and care services severely limited. Our binational community-based participatory research partnership sought to identify priorities for advancing HIV health equity and curtailing the epidemic within Guatemalan transgender communities. In June 2024, we held five stratified, in-person Spanish-language listening sessions in Guatemala City with community leaders (N = 18) representing grassroots trans advocacy groups, frontline mental healt

Inequitable access to an outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy service: linked cross-sectional study.

STUDY AIM: To assess whether Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) is provided equitably across gender and social groups in a tertiary care setting. BACKGROUND: OPAT is a widely used and growing approach in high income countries to early discharge or admission avoidance for patients requiring intravenous antimicrobials. There is however a risk that equitable access to healthcare could be eroded unintentionally by expansion of outpatient or ambulatory approaches such as this. Anecdotal evidence in our service, and from published studies, have identified a gender and social group e

Medical Student Perceptions of the Barriers to Entering Orthopaedic Surgery Differ by Gender.

BACKGROUND: The value of gender representation has been increasingly recognised in medicine, yet women represent only 13.6% of orthopaedic surgeons in Canada. The primary objective of this study was to determine barriers identified by medical students considering pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery. The secondary objective was to assess for gender-based differences in barriers identified by medical students. METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed-methods survey was distributed to final-year students at a Canadian medical school. Descriptive analyses were calculated for the study population and

Intersectionality and the Association Between State-Level Structural Racism, Binge Alcohol Consumption, and Smoking Status Among Black Americans.

BACKGROUND: Structural racism is associated with alcohol and tobacco use among Black Americans. There is a need to understand how this relationship differs within varying groups of Black Americans. This study assessed the moderating roles of age, gender, and income in the association between structural racism and binge alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking status among Black Americans. METHODS: A state-level index of structural racism was merged with data from a national probability sample of 1946 Black Americans. Hierarchical linear and logistic regression models tested associations betwee

Emergency department care experiences among members of equity-deserving groups: quantitative results from a cross-sectional mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Emergency departments (EDs) serve an integral role in healthcare, particularly for vulnerable populations. However, marginalized groups often report negative ED experiences, including stigmatizing attitudes and behaviours. We engaged with historically marginalized patients to better understand their ED care experiences. METHOD: Participants were invited to complete an anonymous mixed-methods survey about a previous ED experience. We analysed quantitative data including controls and equity-deserving groups (EDGs) - those who self-identified as: (a) Indigenous; (b) having a disabili

Trends in Female First Authorship in Anatomical Science International: A 24-Year Analysis (2002-2025).

In recent years, the promotion of gender equity and diversity in academic research has attracted increasing international attention. However, studies examining gender differences in authorship within the anatomical sciences remain limited. This study analyzed regional differences and temporal trends in the gender distribution of first authors in articles published in Anatomical Science International, the official English-language journal of the Japanese Association of Anatomists. All articles published between 2002 and 2025 were retrieved from PubMed, and the gender, country of affiliation, an

Sex, gender, and sociodemographic factors associated with repeated prescription refills in chronic pain: insights from a prescription claims cohort study.

PURPOSE: Chronic pain (CP) disproportionately affects women and gender-diverse individuals, raising questions about how sociodemographic factors influence medication use. Yet, the interplay between sex, gender, and prescribed medication use in CP remains poorly understood, limiting optimization, safety, and equity of care. We examined how sex and gender are associated with repeated prescription refills of pain medications among individuals with CP. METHODS: This study was conducted among individuals living with CP and links self-reported data to public and private prescription claims (n = 561
