A Qualitative exploration of the impact of abortion restrictions on people with high risk pregnancies in Georgia.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to understand the barriers people with high risk pregnancies living in a restrictive US state face while attempting to access abortion care. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative study using semistructured virtual interviews with Georgia residents experiencing a high risk pregnancy and attempting to access abortion care. We recruited using flyers distributed at multiple health care facilities in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as an out-of-state clinic. The interviews focused on the participant's pregnancy experience, abortion-seeking journey, and impact of Georgia's

Evaluation of Hepatitis C Virus Transmission Through Endoscopy Procedures in the Country of Georgia.

Exposure to healthcare procedures might be a source of hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission in Georgia, one of the few countries currently on track to eliminate hepatitis C. While there has been a history of iatrogenic transmission of HCV, the risk of HCV transmission related to endoscopic procedures has not been previously assessed in Georgia. The goal of this study was to assess HCV seroconversion among individuals undergoing endoscopic procedures to estimate the relative role and incidence of HCV infection attributable to endoscopic procedures. A prospective cohort study was conducted in fo

Factors associated with support for social enforcement of smoke-free policies in Georgia and Armenia.

INTRODUCTION: Armenia's and Georgia's high rates of smoking and secondhand smoke and recent implementation of smoke-free laws provide a timely opportunity to examine factors that increase compliance, like social enforcement and support for governmental enforcement. METHODS: Using 2022 data from 1468 Armenian and Georgian adults (mean age=42.92 years, 48.6% male, 31.6% past-month smoking), multilevel linear regression examined tobacco-related media exposures, social exposures, and perceptions/attitudes in relation to: 1) likelihood of asking someone to extinguish cigarettes where a) prohibited

Exploring the risks of fragmentation in health care markets - An analysis of inpatient care in Georgia.

Private providers play an important role in health systems in low-and middle-income countries. In many such contexts, markets are characterized by a high number of relatively small private facilities. The potential risks from highly concentrated healthcare markets are well-researched, and feature in the "Theories of Harm" investigated by competition regulators. However, there is limited evidence on markets that exhibit substantial harms as a result of very low concentration. This paper explores the risks associated with such market fragmentation, drawing on the example of Georgia, which has a

Association of Sleep Problems With Dialysis Shifts in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Introduction According to a 2023 poll by the International Society of Nephrology, 850 million individuals worldwide suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hemodialysis (HD) is the primary treatment for 69% of the patients with CKD. While HD effectively regulates fluid balance and electrolyte levels, patients often face challenges such as weakness, exhaustion, and cognitive changes, which impact their quality of life. Sleep-related issues, including poor quality, excessive morning sleepiness, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome (RLS), are particularly common among HD patients. These distu

Effects of Georgia's Medicaid Family Planning Waiver on Pregnancy Characteristics and Birth Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Medicaid family planning waivers can increase access to health care services and have been associated with lower rates of unintended pregnancy, which is associated with a higher risk of negative birth outcomes such as preterm birth and low birthweight. The objective of this study was to test the effect of Georgia's Medicaid family planning waiver, Planning for Healthy Babies (P4HB), on pregnancy characteristics and birth outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey data in pre- (2008-2009) and two post-periods (2012-2013

Hepatitis C prevalence and risk factors in Georgia, 2015: setting a baseline for elimination.

BACKGROUND: The country of Georgia launched the world's first Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Elimination Program in 2015 and set a 90% prevalence reduction goal for 2020. We conducted a nationally representative HCV seroprevalence survey to establish baseline prevalence to measure progress toward elimination over time. METHODS: A cross-sectional seroprevalence survey was conducted in 2015 among adults aged ≥18 years using a stratified, multi-stage cluster design (n = 7000). Questionnaire variables included demographic, medical, and behavioral risk characteristics and HCV-related knowledge. Blood spe

Individual and Group-Based Engagement in an Online Physical Activity Monitoring Program in Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Given the rising prevalence of obesity in the United States, innovative methods are needed to increase physical activity (PA) in community settings. Evidence suggests that individuals are more likely to engage in PA if they are given a choice of activities and have support from others (for encouragement, motivation, and accountability). The objective of this study was to describe the use of the online Walk Georgia PA tracking platform according to whether the user was an individual user or group user. METHODS: Walk Georgia is a free, interactive online tracking platform that ena

Molecular Survey of Bacterial Zoonotic Agents in Bats from the Country of Georgia (Caucasus).

Bats are important reservoirs for many zoonotic pathogens. However, no surveys of bacterial pathogens in bats have been performed in the Caucasus region. To understand the occurrence and distribution of bacterial infections in these mammals, 218 bats belonging to eight species collected from four regions of Georgia were examined for Bartonella, Brucella, Leptospira, and Yersinia using molecular approaches. Bartonella DNA was detected in 77 (35%) bats from all eight species and was distributed in all four regions. The prevalence ranged 6-50% per bat species. The Bartonella DNA represented 25 un

Comment on "A complete skull from Dmanisi, Georgia, and the evolutionary biology of early Homo".

Lordkipanidze et al. (Research Article, 18 October 2013, p. 326) conclude, from gross morphological comparisons and geometric-morphometric analysis of general shape, that the five hominid crania from Dmanisi in Georgia represent a single regional variant of Homo erectus. However, dental, mandibular, and cranial morphologies all suggest taxic diversity and, in particular, validate the previously named H. georgicus.

Validity of birth certificate data for the outcome of the previous pregnancy, Georgia, 1980-1995.

The author evaluated the validity of four historically based variables collected on Georgia birth certificates: outcome of preceding pregnancy, history of delivery of a low- (<2,500 g) or high- (>4,000 g) birth-weight infant, and death of the baby resulting from the preceding pregnancy. Data were derived from birth and fetal death certificates that were linked for the first and second deliveries of 231,075 women in Georgia from 1980 through 1995. Deaths that occurred during the infant's first year of life were also linked to the birth certificate. For all but the survival variable, the outcome
