Gardner syndrome is a hereditary disease in which patients develop gastrointestinal polyps, osteomas, desmoid tumors, epidermoid cysts, fibromas, lipomas, and retinal lesions. Dental abnormalities such as supernumerary or impacted teeth, odontomas and dentigerous cysts are also reported. The most serious concern in this syndrome is the extremely high risk of gastrointestinal polyps undergoing malignant transformation. Since the maxillofacial findings usually precede gastrointestinal polyps, the dentist plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of Gardner syndrome, and panoramic radiography is an i

An institutionalized high care dementia patient, who is unable to maintain his own oral health, presented with five lower anterior carious root stumps supporting a lower overlay denture. Due to limited cooperation, his root stumps were treated with only silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride applied topically on a 4-monthly cycle. Almost one and a half years after his initial application, there were unexpected calculus formations on the root stumps accompanied by marked gingival inflammation and gingival hyperplasia. At this point prognosis was considered very poor. Because the patient'

Fraser syndrome (FS) is a rare recessive autosomal genetic disorder characterized by multisystemic malformations typically comprising cryptophthalmos, syndactyly, and renal defects. We report the case of a 16-year-old patient who exhibited facial asymmetry, short roots, hypodontia, and malocclusion. Oral rehabilitation included orthodontics, exodontia, and osseointegrated dental implants to improve the patient's self-esteem and eating function. We suggest short roots and hypodontia assessment in patients with FS.

Risk factors for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) include type and duration of antiresorptive drugs, dental trauma, local anatomy, systemic underlying conditions and therapy, smoking, and the presence of periodontal disease. However, there is a lack of studies elucidating the role of periodontal disease as risk predictor. In the present study, the dental charts of 100 multiple myeloma (MM) patients and 16 MM patients who developed MRONJ were studied. Information about age, gender, smoking history, diabetes, steroid drug intake, type and duration of bisphosphonate (BP) treat

Leukemic infiltration of the gingival tissue associated or not with gingival enlargement may be the first manifestation of acute leukemia, despite being rarely reported in the literature. A 10-year-old female patient presented with a 1-month history of an asymptomatic, firm, and pinkish-red generalized gingival overgrowth. There was no bone resorption. Incisional biopsy of the gingival tissue was performed, with histopathological examination revealing a diffuse and hypercellular infiltration of monocytoid cells. The patient was referred to a hematologist and underwent a bone marrow biopsy, whi

A strong association between celiac disease (CD) and dental enamel defects (DEDs) have been extensively reported, however, the nature of this relationship is still unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate DEDs phenotype in CD individuals according to the time they were introduced to a gluten-free diet (GFD). Forty-five CD individuals were examined by a pediatric dentist. DEDs were classified according to the type of affected teeth. CD individuals were classified into two groups (with or without DEDs) and the differences between these groups were tested using chi-square or Fisher´s exact

BACKGROUND: Primary surgical repair of the bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) deformity is challenging. Infant Orthopedic (IO) procedures are often used to assist surgical reconstruction of normal anatomy. Nasoalveolar molding (NAM) is a presurgical infant orthopedic procedure that attempts to reduce the cleft nasal deformity, in addition to the lip and alveolus, leading to an esthetic primary surgical repair.
OBJECTIVE: NAM provides the surgical team with a better foundation for an easier and more esthetic single stage repair at the level of nose in addition to the lip and alveolus.

Down syndrome is one of the most common congenital anomaly. It is most frequently caused by trisomy of chromosome 21. Other causes can be mosaicism and translocation. Such patients are commonly encountered in routine dental practice. This syndrome has wide range of medical and dental abnormalities. This paper presents a unique case of fusion and concrescence of retained primary teeth in a child with Down syndrome. The incidence of such anomalies is quite low in these cases. Thus, a better awareness of such conditions on part of a dental practitioner will aid in the provision of enhanced dental

Carcinomas of the mandibular buccogingival region being aggressive rapidly destroy the supporting bone and adjacent soft tissues, making it mandatory for the oncosurgeon to resect substantial amounts of involved hard and soft tissues. Segmental mandibulectomy -followed by immediate bony and soft tissue reconstruction is the most acceptable approach. However, immediate reconstruction may not always be feasible or possible due to high recurrences potential of lesion, inaccessible residual pathology, or systemic -conditions that pose a risk for graft inosculation. One-third of community-dwelling people older than 65 years of age fall each year, and half of them fall at least twice a year. Older care home residents are approximately three times more likely to fall when compared to community-dwelling older people. Risk indicators for falls are related to the older people's body, environment, behavior, and activities. An important health risk indicator is (orthostatic or postprandial) hypotension, which may induce cerebral hypoperfusion. Although the majority of falls remain without major consequences, 10% to 25% of falls in care homes result in bodily tra
