Better understanding of the quality of life among nursing home residents with dementia is important for developing interventions. The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to examine factors associated with poor health-related quality of life in older people with dementia living in nursing homes in Hanoi, Vietnam. In-person interviews were conducted with 140 adults who were 60 years and older with dementia, and information about their quality of life was obtained using the Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease (QOL-AD) scale. The sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with p

Frailty and depression are geriatric syndromes commonly seen in older adults that negatively affect quality of life and functional status. This study examined the levels of frailty and depression and the relationship between them in 159 older adults who visited three family health centers. Data were collected using the Edmonton Frailty Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale. Depression was detected in 22.6% of participants, and frailty in 33.4%. Frailty showed a significant relationship with marital status, education, employment status, number of children, health insurance, chronic disease, and

An investigative study was performed to determine the diagnosis of onychomycosis in a South Florida geriatric population. In this study, 450 cases of suspected onychomycosis involving men and women 65 years of age and older from a private practice office and two nursing home settings were used. Samples were taken from the hallux toenail and sent to a mycology laboratory for fluorescent potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation and microscopic examination of a fungal culture. Of the 450 cases studied, 46.4% of the patients had a single fungal organism cultured, 30.4% had a mixed fungal infection cu

Eight percent of the elderly patients discharged from a geriatric unit in one year were readmitted within three months. Forty-six percent had been living alone and nearly all of these had received full community support at the time of discharge. Recurrent problems were the reason for readmission in 59% of cases, mainly due to falls, incontinence, and confusion. Only 54% of the readmitted patients were discharged home again--those with new additional problems tended to die in hospital, whereas those with recurrent problems often required institutional long-term care. It is concluded that even w

AIM: This study was carried out to systematically describe nurses' competence in kinaesthetics.
BACKGROUND: In elderly care the kinaesthetics program for nurses has been taught for over 25 years; however, the competence that nurses should gain through kinaesthetics training from a theoretical perspective has not yet been systematically described.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The method was modelled after the three phases of the hybrid model of concept development by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim (2000). In the theoretical phase a working definition was established and a literature review conducted. We s

The purpose of this research was to describe wandering behaviors of institutionalized patients with Alzheimer's disease in their natural environment. Such descriptive information is necessary before successful product and/or nursing intervention programs can be developed. Videotaped behavioral observations yielded detailed data descriptive of patients with middle and late dementia. These patients have the physical ability to perform various functions, activities, or actions; the individual's mental ability is less supportive of physical ability. The degree of task simplicity required to enable

BACKGROUND: Currently, few studies focus on the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients after a fracture. The effect of PD on geriatric patients with intertrochanteric fracture remains unclear. Therefore, we performed a study to focus on two questions as follow: (1) would PD increase the operation difficulty and perioperative complications in Chinese elderly patients with intertrochanteric fracture? (2) is there any difference between the clinical outcome of patients with and without PD?
HYPOTHESIS: PD would increase perioperative complications and influence the postoperative rehabilit

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of urinary incontinence increases with age. Especially in nursing homes people often do not only suffer from incontinence, in addition they present comorbidities, i.e. dementia or loss of mobility. In this study we assessed the severity of urinary incontinence and comorbidities of nursing home residents.
METHODS: We included 81 residents of nursing homes who underwent recordings of medical history, physical examination and ultrasound diagnostic of the urinary tract. Grading of urinary incontinence was assessed by the amount of pads used daily. Severity of immobili

BACKGROUND: Joint contractures are a common phenomenon in older persons and are assessed by measuring the range of motion; however, little is known about the impact of joint contractures on activities of daily living (ADL).
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to identify problems related to joint contracture of older persons in a geriatric setting using the international classification of functioning, disability and health (ICF) as a framework.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and July 2013 in nursing homes (n=11) and geriatric rehabilitation hosp

The management of pain in a elderly patients with advanced dementia is a very frequently problem in geriatric wards. The pain in patients with advanced dementia whose verbal fluency is declining is underestimated and poorly treated and this is mainly due to the lack of availability of proper tools able to recognise and to assess this disease symptom in those patients. During recent years major progress has taken place, and valid scales that allow for the assessment of the pain also in those kind of patients have been developed. The objective of this research is to verify the pertinence of the

OBJECTIVES: Anticoagulation for the prevention of cardio-embolism is most frequently indicated but largely underused in frail older patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). This study aimed at identifying characteristics associated with anticoagulation underuse.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of consecutive geriatric patients aged ≥75 years, with AF and clear anticoagulation indication (CHADS₂ [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age >75, Diabetes mellitus, and prior Stroke or transient ischemic attack] ≥2) upon hospital admission. All patients benefited from a comprehensive geriatric as

ESBL organisms provide a continuing challenge in the geriatric community. They are increasingly prevalent, and pose unique challenges in treatment. Carbapenems are the mainstay of therapy; however they are expensive medications that require prolonged intravenous administration. Carbapenem resistance is a growing concern among frequently hospitalized patients and nursing home residents, and options for treatment of MDROs are limited. Attempts at minimizing the spread of beta-lactamase producers through hygiene and contact precautions are imperative, as is ongoing research into more effective an

Falls are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults, yet objective gait data in nursing homes are rarely available to inform clinical decision-making. We conducted a 30-day observational feasibility study using a lightweight, torso-mounted wearable sensor to continuously measure gait in 16 nursing home residents. Linear mixed-effects models evaluated hourly and daily associations among step count, gait symmetry, foot strength, time, self-reported activity status (active vs inactive), and walking status (independent vs requiring assistance). Daily step counts declined driven

BACKGROUND: Geriatric rehabilitation can reduce care dependency in old age. To complement the clinical rehabilitation, some countries have developed rehabilitative approaches for long-term care facilities in which nursing personnel play an active role; however, a comprehensive review of these approaches and their effects is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: The aims of this scoping review are to identify rehabilitative approaches in nursing homes involving active participation of nursing personnel and to summarize the effects that have been reported to date.

BACKGROUND: Assessment and self-assessment frequently differ, e. g. in psychosomatic disorders and complaints. At the same time the prevalence of corresponding disorders in old age is high.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated psychosocial factors from the perspective of nursing home residents and compared this self-assessment with data collected in other scientific studies with assessments by nursing home staff. The aim was to develop specific recommendations for the nursing home sector.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional pilot study 256 nursing home residents (average age 81 ± 10.

BACKGROUND: In various contexts, the identification of insurants with geriatric conditions (GC) can offer new approaches for specific medical services. GC can be determined from diagnoses data of insurants retrieved from different care sectors, and supplemented with other relevant claims data, e.g., long-term care levels and pharmaceutical data.
METHODS: Part 3 of this study is based on a systematic sample of 957,447 AOK insurants (age ≥ 60 years). Prevalence of 15 GC was investigated using anonymous claims data of diagnoses from physicians in the ambulant care setting and diagnoses from hosp
