[A syndrome of visuo-verbal and visuo-gestural disconnexion. Optic aphasia and optic apraxia (author's transl)].

A 71 year-old female patient was investigated during several months after a double left hemispheric lesion of vascular origin. The larger lesion was temporo-occipital, the second one parietal. The main neurological disorder was a right homonymous hemianopia. Clinical and neuroradiological data confirmed the integrity of the right hemisphere. There was neither a global deterioration of intellectual capacities nor aphasia. In particular, visual agnosia was excluded by a series of matching and functional classification tests. Nevertheless the objects and their pictures, which the patient could re

Early multimodal behavioral cues in autism: a micro-analytical exploration of actions, gestures and speech during naturalistic parent-child interactions.

Early signs of autism often emerge through distinct developmental pathways, particularly in communication, social interaction, and play. While naturalistic parent-child interactions during free play are ideal for observing spontaneous social behaviors, few autism studies have adopted this ecological and developmental approach. To address this gap, we used a fine-grained microanalytic method to examine motor, gestural, and vocal behaviors in young children, integrating machine learning to explore how combinations of these traits distinguish early autistic neurodivergence. We analyzed video reco

Does Caregivers' Responsiveness Influence the Early Development of Deictic Gestures? Longitudinal and Training Evidence in Relation to Subsequent Language Development.

Infants' deictic gestures, like hold-out-give (HoG) and pointing, are early manifestations of intentional, referential communication and predict later language acquisition. But what factors predict the early emergence of these deictic gestures? The present study investigated the longitudinal and cross-sectional influence of caregivers' responsiveness and pointing, beginning at 7 months, on infants' HoG and index-finger pointing gestures at 10 months, and infants' language abilities at 24 months. Utilizing a longitudinal design, we assessed 82 typically developing German infants, 42 of whom wer

Frequency and determinants of words, gestures, and attitudes experienced as disrespectful during childbirth and postpartum: A national population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Disrespectful maternity care is receiving increasing attention but remains poorly assessed in high-income countries. The aim was to assess the frequency and determinants of professionals' words, gestures and attitudes experienced as disrespectful by women during childbirth and postpartum stays. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This national quantitative observational study used the population-based Enquête Nationale Périnatale (ENP) 2021 database, which provides a representative sample of women who gave birth in metropolitan France and includes a 2-month postpartum follow-up (n = 7394). Smoking-related gestures as a behavioral dimension of tobacco use: associations with psychological distress and smoking patterns in treatment-seeking smokers.

Smoking behavior is influenced not only by nicotine dependence but also by behavioral rituals and psychological factors. The motor routines associated with smoking, such as holding and manipulating the cigarette, may represent an important behavioral component of tobacco addiction. However, the relationship between smoking-related gestures, psychological distress, and smoking behavior has received limited empirical attention. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 787 treatment-seeking smokers undergoing clinical evaluation for tobacco dependence. Smoking behavior was assessed through t

Multimodal strategies for resolving lexical challenges: The role of situational resources and creative gestures in four- and five-year-old children.

This study explores how four- and five-year-old children use gestures to creatively resolve lexical and representational challenges, and how creative gestures emerge when verbal resources are insufficient. Sixty-five German-speaking children corrected a puppet's unconventional use of a spoon with support of visual stimuli (correction task), and then described the event to a caregiver without visual stimuli (illustration task). Our quantitative analysis focused on representational gestures (deictic and iconic) and gesture size. Across tasks, results showed significantly more deictic gestures wh

Difficulties in decoupling articulatory gestures in L2 phonemic sequences: the case of Mandarin listeners' perceptual deletion of English post-vocalic laterals.

Nonnative or second language (L2) perception of segmental sequences is often characterised by perceptual modification processes, which may "repair" a nonnative sequence that is phonotactically illegal in the listeners' native language (L1) by transforming the sequence into a sequence that is phonotactically legal in the L1. Often repairs involve the insertion of phonetic materials (epenthesis), but we focus, here, on the less-studied phenomenon of perceptual deletion of nonnative phonemes by testing L1 Mandarin listeners' perception of post-vocalic laterals in L2 English using the triangulatin

Symbolic and deictic gestures as a tool to promote parent-child communication in the context of hearing loss: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Language and communication outcomes in children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (cSNHL) are highly variable, and some of this variance can be attributed to the quantity and quality of language input. In this paper, we build from the evidence that human language is inherently multimodal and positive scaffolding of children's linguistic, cognitive, and social-relational development can be supported by Parent Centered Early Interventions (PCEI), to suggest that the use of gestures in these interventions could be a beneficial approach, yet scarcely explored. AIMS AND METHOD

Impaired imitation of meaningless gestures in ideomotor apraxia: a conceptual problem not a disorder of action control? A single case investigation.

A defining characteristic of ideomotor apraxia is an inability to imitate meaningless gestures. This is widely interpreted as being due to difficulties in the formulation or execution of motor programs for complex action, but an alternative view is that there is a higher level cognitive problem in conceptualisation of the target posture. In a single case with inferior left parietal and temporal damage, severely impaired imitation was accompanied by preserved motor skill and spatial awareness but inability to make a conceptual match between the fingers of his own hand and an observed hand. Also

MXene/graphene composite flexible impedance glove with wide linear range for cross-subject gesture recognition.

With the continuous evolution of human-machine interaction (HMI) technologies, natural and intuitive gesture recognition has emerged as a pivotal interaction modality. However, constrained by inter-individual differences in hand dimensions and wearing habits, existing gesture recognition techniques still suffer from limited generalization performance in cross-subject recognition. This paper proposes a flexible impedance glove based on MXene/graphene composites with wide linear response range, which enables lightweight and zero-shot cross-subject gesture recognition. The sensing layer of the gl

Hand-gesture recognition using self-powered and single-electrode motion sensors fabricated with InN nanowires.

The ability to accurately monitor human motions such as hand-gestures is essential for establishing human-machine interface (HMI) systems for application in cutting-edge technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. In this study, we developed self-powered and single-electrode piezoelectric motion sensors (PMSs) to precisely monitor hand-gestures. The sensors are based on semiconductor InN nanowires (NWs) and graphene as the response medium and channel of carrier movement, respectively. Compared to motion sensors with a double-electrode configuration, the

Children Sustain Their Attention on Spatial Scenes When Planning to Describe Spatial Relations Multimodally in Speech and Gesture.

How do children allocate visual attention to scenes as they prepare to describe them multimodally in speech and co-speech gesture? In an eye-tracking study, Turkish-speaking 8-year-old children viewed four-picture displays depicting the same two objects in different spatial relations as they prepared to describe target pictures depicting left-right relations. Children's visual attention was sustained on the target picture when they were planning descriptions that expressed the spatial relation multimodally in speech and gesture, but not unimodally in speech only. This pattern persisted regardl

Young deaf and hearing children's understanding of intentions signalled by nonverbal gestural cues directed to a third person.

The development of socio-cognitive skills depends on understanding others' behavioral cues. We studied 43 toddlers (21 girls, 22 boys, aged 10-37 months; 74% White Hispanic), including 21 deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children, using data collected in Catalonia (Spain) between November 2022 and July 2023. An experimenter indicated a hidden toy's location to an assistant either by a point with gaze or by gaze only. Both DHH and hearing toddlers understood the point with gaze cue. However, only the hearing group interpreted the gaze-only cue by reliably searching for the hidden toy. These findi

A low-cost transhumeral prosthesis operated via an ML-assisted EEG-head gesture control system.

Objective.Key challenges in upper limb prosthetics include a lack of effective control systems, the often invasive surgical requirements of brain-controlled limbs, and prohibitive costs. As a result, disuse rates remain high despite potential for increased quality of life. To address these concerns, this project developed a low cost, noninvasive transhumeral neuroprosthesis-operated via a combination of electroencephalography (EEG) signals and head gestures.Approach.To address the shortcomings of current noninvasive neural monitoring techniques-namely, single-channel EEG-we leveraged machine l

a Novel Dual-Model Adaptive Continuous Learning Strategy for Wrist-sEMG Real-Time Gesture Recognition.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a promising technology for hand gesture recognition, yet faces challenges in user mobility and individual calibration. This paper introduces a novel dual-model adaptive continuous learning (DM-ACL) strategy for wrist-based sEMG real-time gesture recognition. The core of the DM-ACL strategy is a semi-supervised online learning algorithm that uses the kNN model to provide auxiliary labels for real-time sEMG signals, enhancing the robustness and adaptability of the deep learning model. Experimental results show that the DM-ACL strategy outperforms conventional t

Charlie Chaplin and gesture training in severe aphasia: A controlled double-blind single-case experimental design.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia following a stroke is a frequent and disabling condition that decreases quality of life. The use of gesture has been proposed as a way to enhance aphasia recovery. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore whether 2 types of gesture interventions could improve communication in individuals with severe aphasia. METHODS: This was a pilot study performed at home in routine care by an outreach team. The study had a controlled double-blind single-case experimental design (SCED): a controlled multiple baseline design across 3 participants and 2 behaviors (gesture and naming). Three male pa

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Improves Semantic Speech-Gesture Matching in Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) have severe deficits in speech and gesture processing that contribute considerably to the burden of this disorder. Brain imaging shows left inferior frontal gyrus involvement for impaired processing of co-verbal gestures in patients with schizophrenia. Recently, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the left frontal lobe has been shown to modulate processing of co-verbal gestures in healthy subjects. Although tDCS has been used to reduce symptoms of patients with SSD, the effects of tDCS on gesture processing deficits

Design of User-Independent Hand Gesture Recognition Using Multilayer Perceptron Networks and Sensor Fusion Techniques.

According to the World Health Organization, stroke is the third leading cause of disability. A common consequence of stroke is hemiparesis, which leads to the impairment of one side of the body and affects the performance of activities of daily living. It has been proven that targeting the motor impairments as early as possible while using wearable mechatronic devices as a robot assisted therapy, and letting the patient be in control of the robotic system, can improve the rehabilitation outcomes. However, despite the increased progress on control methods for wearable mechatronic devices, a nee

The relationship between co-speech gesture production and macrolinguistic discourse abilities in people with focal brain injury.

Brain damage is associated with linguistic deficits and might alter co-speech gesture production. Gesture production after focal brain injury has been mainly investigated with respect to intrasentential rather than discourse-level linguistic processing. In this study, we examined 1) spontaneous gesture production patterns of people with left hemisphere damage (LHD) or right hemisphere damage (RHD) in a narrative setting, 2) the neural structures associated with deviations in spontaneous gesture production in these groups, and 3) the relationship between spontaneous gesture production and disco
