The purpose of this study was to describe the extent and distribution of gingival recession in Thai elderly. As part of a longitudinal geriatric oral health study, 453 community-dwelling dentate subjects, 51-92 years of age, were examined at baseline in 1999. All remaining teeth were measured on four periodontal sites to assess the amount of gingival recession. The percentage of sites with recession increased with age from 49.6% in 51-59 years of age to 72.0% in 70+ years of age (P < 0.001). Males exhibited greater levels of recession than females (P < 0.001). Regression analysis for the perce

Miniature swine exhibit naturally-occurring, progressive recession on facial surfaces of the permanent mandibular incisors. The purpose of this study was to determine whether placing a free gingival graft to augment the width of keratinized gingiva of mandibular incisors in miniature swine would prevent or retard recession at the grafted site compared to an untreated contralateral control site. In 8 litter-mate miniature swine, free gingival grafts were placed on the facial surface of the permanent central and lateral incisors on one side of the mandible. The contralateral mandibular incisors

BACKGROUND: Mucogingival surgery for root coverage of gingival recessions (GRs) is usually performed in patients with unremarkable periodontal and systemic health. However, the predictable results of surgical procedures and increasingly high aesthetic expectations of patients necessitate optimal management of GR also in patients with systemic conditions that affect the oral cavity. In patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV), mucosal fragility and complicated surgical management of inflamed soft tissues are major challenges.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 36-year-old female patient with PV and deep GR o

BACKGROUND: One of the most common esthetic concerns associated with periodontal tissues is gingival recession. There are multiple periodontal plastic surgery approaches documented in the literature for the treatment of such defects. With the tremendous advances being made in periodontal science and technology, tissue engineering could be considered among the latest exciting techniques for recession management.
METHODS: In this split-mouth, controlled, double-masked clinical case series, 20 sites from 10 patients with Miller Class I or II recessions affecting canines or premolars in the maxil

Numerous surgical procedures have evolved and are being modified with time to treat gingival recession by manipulating gingival or mucosal tissues in various ways. However, the decision to choose the most appropriate technique for a given recession site still remains a challenging task for clinicians. Mucogingival deformities such as shallow vestibule, frenal pull, or inadequate attached gingiva complicate the decision and limit the treatment options to an invasive procedure involving soft tissue grafts. The situation is further comprised if there is a nonavailability of adequate donor tissue

Fear of losing the teeth is common among patients presenting with gingival recession. This report describes a case in which unusual gingival recessions were caused by lip piercing. Periodontal treatment involved removal of the causative agent, hygiene instruction, scaling and root planing, and coverage of the root with a subepithelial connective tissue graft. The therapeutic measures applied in this case yielded satisfactory root coverage, an increase in the width of the keratinized gingiva, improvement in hygiene status and absence of dental hypersensitivity.

Exposed root surfaces cause esthetic problems and hypersensitivity to thermal and tactile stimuli. Plastic surgical treatment solves these problems and yields good permanent results. The authors share their experience of the treatment of 30 patients with 186 gingival recessions localized in the lower and upper jaws, frontally and premolarly. The clinico-biometrical studies conducted over a period of 3 to 15 years showed a mean root coverage of 88.48% and in 17 patients the root coverage is 100%. The applied method can successfully deal with multiple gingival recessions in only two visits prese

Dehiscence depths were measured in vivo during surgical treatment of 113 teeth with gingival recession in 27 subjects. The average dehiscence depth determined was 5.43 mm with an average recession depth of 2.67 mm. Statistical evidence of a correlation between recession depth and dehiscence depth (average distance between lowest point of recession and dehiscence = 2.8 mm) leaves 16 affected teeth (n = 113) with a distance of 4 mm or more (up to a maximum of 7.5 mm) between the gingival margin and the alveolar crest (facial) unaccounted for. The significance of these deviations from mean values

BACKGROUND: Dental malocclusions may cause disruption in occlusal harmony, and destructive interferences during mandibular functional movements can be seen. Ideal occlusal contacts during dynamic mandibular movements may be crucial for preventing the occurrence of mid-buccal gingival recession (mbGR). While determining mbGR risk factors in young adults, the effect of occlusal interferences on mbGR has not yet been focused on. Based on this gap, this field needs to be clarified with new studies.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to assess the prevalence of gingival recessions in patients before, immediately after, and 2 and 5 years after orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: Labial gingival recessions in all teeth were scored (yes or no) by 2 raters on initial, end-of-treatment, and posttreatment (2 and 5 years) plaster models of 302 orthodontic patients (38.7% male; 61.3% female) selected from a posttreatment archive. Their mean ages were 13.6 years (SD, 3.6; range, 9.5-32.7 years) at the initial assessment, 16.2 years (SD, 3.5; range, 11.7-35.1 years) at the end of treatment, 18.6 years (SD, 3.6

AIMS: The aims of this study were to verify patients' perception of buccal recessions and their requests for treatment.
METHODS: The patients filled out a questionnaire dealing with demographic variables and perception of buccal gingival recessions. A calibrated examiner checked for recessions and recorded the clinical variables. Then, the patients were asked to explain what they believed to be the causes of the recessions and whether they were interested in obtaining treatment of their lesions. Descriptive statistics and multilevel logistic models were used.
RESULTS: Of 120 enrolled patient
