PURPOSE: To assess the effects of phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implantation, and goniosynechialysis on patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma and cataract.

PURPOSE: To assess the association of LTBP2 mutations with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG).
METHODS: We studied 54 unrelated patients with PACG and one individual with pseudoexfoliation accompanied with angle closure glaucoma; these consisted of 28 female and 27 male subjects aged 27 to 82 (mean, 63) years. The 36 exons and flanking intronic sequences of LTBP2 in all patients were amplified by PCR and sequenced by the Sanger protocol. The sequences were compared to LTBP2 reference sequences. A total of 100 to 400 controls aged at least 60 years old were screened for various variations.

The incidence and seasonal variations of acute primary angle-closure glaucoma (APACG) was studied. It was based on a retrospective chart review of 121 hospital patients in Split, Croatia for the fifteen-year period from 1985 through 1999. The average incidence was 4.1 cases per 100,000 per year in the total population and 7.1 per 100,000 in those aged 30 years and older. APACG affects women almost twice more often than men. The incidence rate increased with age. No seasonal variations in the occurrence of APACG and no correlation with the mean duration of light exposure per season were found.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and to assess the visual outcomes of patients treated for PACG.
DESIGN: Population-based retrospective incidence study.
SETTING AND PATIENTS: Residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, aged 40 years and older and diagnosed with PACG in the 13-year period between January 1, 1980, and December 31, 1992.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Incident cases of PACG identified through the Medical Diagnostic Index of Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn, and the Rochester Epidemiology Project.

The authors compared the results of a prevalence study of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) in Duilong-Deqing county, suburb of Lhasa, Tibet in 1987, with those of a similar study in Shunyi county, suburb of Beijing in 1985.
