Mycotoxins and human disease: a largely ignored global health issue.

Aflatoxins and fumonisins (FB) are mycotoxins contaminating a large fraction of the world's food, including maize, cereals, groundnuts and tree nuts. The toxins frequently co-occur in maize. Where these commodities are dietary staples, for example, in parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America, the contamination translates to high-level chronic exposure. This is particularly true in subsistence farming communities where regulations to control exposure are either non-existent or practically unenforceable. Aflatoxins are hepatocarcinogenic in humans, particularly in conjunction with chronic hepatit

Emerging and re-emerging Infectious diseases: a global health threat.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic can truly be described as an infectious disease that has recently emerged and judging from its rapid global spread, it leaves no doubt that it is one of the greatest health threats mankind has to contend with. This pandemic has alerted and stimulated the international scientific community to seriously reflect oa other recent episodes of emerging and re-emerging infections. The examples that have recently been observed and addressed include new emerging infectious diseases, unusual manifestations of previously known diseases and unusual eruption of known diseases in unusua

Periodontal health and periodontal disease in young people: global epidemiology.

A review of epidemiological surveys of the periodontal conditions of young people has shown that chronic marginal gingivitis associated primarily with plaque, is global, very common and even endemic in some population groups. Data on the prevalence of transient gingival conditions associated with tooth eruption, puberty and systemic factors are lacking and therefore their contribution to the prevalence of periodontal disease is unknown. Reports of periodontitis in young people are relatively uncommon except in a few populations where it appears as an adult-type of chronic marginal periodontiti

Climate change impacts on the global potential distribution of the human flea, Pulex irritans, and the global health risks.

The human flea, Pulex irritans, is a hematophagous ectoparasite and medically significant vector of zoonotic pathogens, such as Yersinia pestis (plague), Bartonella quintana (trench fever), and Rickettsia felis (flea-borne spotted fever). Despite the public health significance of P. irritans, the potential impacts of climate change on its global distribution were unstudied before. In this study, we created an ecological niche model (ENM) through integrating 564 georeferenced records and 15 bioclimatic variables using the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm to project the current and future habi

Governing the digital determinants of health for children and young people: a global public health imperative.

The digital determinants of health are the structural conditions through which digital infrastructures, business models, and design choices shape health outcomes. Yet these determinants remain largely outside public health policy and remain fragmented across regulatory sectors. Rather than regulating individual technologies in isolation, governance should ensure that digital systems and environments advance population health and reduce inequities. A public health approach shifts attention from individual responsibility-and the tendency to blame users-towards the governance of the structural fe

Children with obesity have poorer circadian health as assessed by a global circadian health score.

BACKGROUND: Circadian health refers to individuals' well-being and balance in terms of their circadian rhythm. It is influenced by external cues. In adults, a close relationship between circadian-related alterations and obesity has been described. However, studies in children are scarce, and circadian health and its association with obesity have not been evaluated globally. We aimed to assess whether circadian health differed between children with and without obesity as determined by a global circadian score (GCS) in a school-age population. METHODS: Four hundred and thirty-two children (7-12

Emphasizing the Role of Neurosurgery Within Global Health and National Health Systems: A Call to Action.

Background: Worldwide, neurological disorders are the leading cause of disability-adjusted life years lost and the second leading cause of death. Despite global health capacity-building efforts, each year, 22.6 million individuals worldwide require neurosurgeon's care due to diseases such as traumatic brain injury and hydrocephalus, and 13.8 million of these individuals require surgery. It is clear that neurosurgical care is indispensable in both national and international public health discussions. This study highlights the role neurosurgeons can play in supporting the global health agenda, n

Utilization of Large Data Sets in Maternal Health in Finland: A Case for Global Health Research.

In recent years, the use of large data sets, such as electronic health records, has increased. These large data sets are often referred to as "Big Data," which have various definitions. The purpose of this article was to summarize and review the utilization, strengths, and challenges of register data, which means a written record containing regular entries of items or details, and Big Data, especially in maternal nursing, using 4 examples of studies from the Finnish Medical Birth Register data and relate these to other international databases and data sets. Using large health register data is

Global Health Security in Vision Care: Health Systems Strengthening During Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak Responses.

During the last decade, global health security has been threatened by major Ebola virus disease outbreaks in Western Africa (2014 to 2016) and in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (2018 to 2020). Particularly in Western Africa, the outbreak initially overwhelmed health care capacity in already fragile health systems. Thousands of survivors were at risk of newly recognized postacute ocular complications, and their need for urgent ophthalmic care challenged national vision health systems with scarce eye care services. In these unprecedently large outbreaks with implications for global hea

Converging global health agendas and universal health coverage: financing whole-of-government action through UHC.

UN member states have committed to universal health coverage (UHC) to ensure all individuals and communities receive the health services they need without suffering financial hardship. Although the pursuit of UHC should unify disparate global health challenges, it is too commonly seen as another standalone initiative with a singular focus on the health sector. Despite constituting the cornerstone of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals, UHC-related commitments, actions, and metrics do not engage with the major drivers and determinants of health, such as poverty, gender inequality,

Tobacco use and cessation counseling among health professional students: Lebanon Global Health Professions Student Survey.

INTRODUCTION: The number of deaths attributable to tobacco use is rising globally. Health professionals can help reduce tobacco use by providing advice to patients regarding smoking cessation. Very few studies have collected information on tobacco use and cessation counseling training among health professional students. The purpose of this paper is to examine these issues using data from the 2005 Lebanon Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS). METHODS: The 2005 Lebanon GHPSS includes nationally representative estimates of third-year students in all dental, medical, nursing, and phar

Mapping global oral health financing architectures: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Oral healthcare financing varies considerably across countries in revenue collection, pooling, purchasing arrangements and benefit design. However, the global landscape remains fragmented, with limited systematic comparison of how established health-financing principles apply specifically to oral healthcare. This scoping review aims to map and classify oral health financing architectures globally and describe their structural design, including revenue sources, prepayment and pooling arrangements, purchasing and provider payment approaches and benefit and cost-sharing design. Menstrual health inequities in carceral settings: a global systematic review.

This study aimed to synthesise global evidence on menstrual health experiences, needs, and barriers among incarcerated populations and identify opportunities to advance menstrual health equity in prison settings. Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for studies published between January 2000 and December 2025. Quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods studies, and relevant grey literature were included. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, appraised quality, and synthesised findings na

Global black carbon aerosol: Spatiotemporal distributions, drivers, and health impacts.

Black carbon (BC) is a key short-lived climate pollutant and a toxic component of PM2.5. This review synthesizes global BC studies published since 2000 and evaluates its spatiotemporal distribution, source contributions, meteorological drivers, and health risks. The compiled evidence shows high concentrations are mainly found in South Asia and Africa, while low concentrations occur in Europe and North America. South American records were limited in the screened literature, and the apparent lower concentrations in this region may partly reflect sparse monitoring coverage rather than a regionwid

Public health consequences of global climate change. A narrative review.

Human activities related to the industrialization generated an overall rise of global temperatures with approximately 1 °C since 1880. These increases in temperatures have been accelerating since 1981, with the rate of temperature increase roughly doubling since the 1970s, the average warming rate being of approximately 0.18 °C to 0.20 °C per decade between 1970 to 2015. Even more alarmingly, recent studies indicate that this rate has accelerated to over 0.35 °C per decade since 2015, roughly the double of the previous period. The primarily contributor to the observed extensive climate change

COVID-19 and metabolic health: Lessons from a global pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical role of metabolic health in shaping susceptibility to infection, disease severity, therapeutic response, and vaccine-induced immunity. Accumulating clinical and experimental evidence has shown a bidirectional relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and metabolic dysfunction, whereby pre-existing cardiometabolic disorders exacerbate clinical outcomes, while COVID-19 itself induces acute and persistent metabolic derangements. This Special Issue explores COVID-19 through an immune-metabolic lens, integrating mechanistic insights, clinical persp

Tracking funding disparities in global health aid with machine learning.

Reducing the global burden of disease is crucial for improving health outcomes. However, misalignment between health aid and country-level disease burden leaves vulnerable populations without the necessary support for major health challenges, particularly in the least developed countries. Here, we develop a machine learning pipeline using large language models to track flows in official development assistance (ODA) earmarked for health and identify aid-burden misalignment. We classified 3.7 million development aid projects from 2000 to 2022 (USD  ~ 332 billion) into 17 major categories of comm

Parity before scale: governing large language models in global health.

Large language models (LLMs) are proposed as scalable solutions for health workforce gaps in low- and middle-income countries, yet deployment risks deepening inequities. LLM evaluation remains disproportionately centered on English-language resources, and current reporting standards do not operationalize linguistic parity, data sovereignty, or accountability for specific language communities, care pathways, and regulatory arrangements. We propose three minimum governance commitments: parity before scale, requiring pre-specified performance thresholds or non-inferiority margins by language and
