The purpose of this study was to improve the quality of frozen-thawed canine spermatozoa through the optimization of glycerol concentration (GC) and freezing rate in the semen freezing protocol. Ejaculates from nine dogs were diluted with an extender containing 0%, 1.5%, 3%, 6%, or 9% glycerol. A 78-year-old man with combined trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia underwent glycerol rhizolysis of the trigeminal ganglion. The treatment led to the immediate relief of both neuralgias. In 139 patients, 260 consecutive retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomies for trigeminal neuralgia were retrospectively analyzed regarding technical surgical difficulties and immediate and early complications. We report the case of a male infant who at 10 days of life presented with salt-wasting. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia was excluded on the basis of normal 17 alpha-hydroxy-progesterone plasma levels evaluated before the onset of steroid replacement therapy. The acidified glycerol lysis test (AGLT) is highly sensitive for hereditary spherocytosis (HS). In all 50 patients of the Children's Hospital of the Medical Academy Magdeburg suffering from HS the 50% lysis time was found to be pathological between 19 and 110 seconds. However, pathological results of this test were also found in autoimmune haemolytic anaemias. AGLT was negative in non-spherocytic haemolytic anaemias and normal controls. In conclusion, the AGLT is a rapid, simple and inexpensive screening procedure for spherocytes in blood.
