A system identification analysis of neural adaptation dynamics and nonlinear responses in the local reflex control of locust hind limbs.

Nonlinear type system identification models coupled with white noise stimulation provide an experimentally convenient and quick way to investigate the often complex and nonlinear interactions between the mechanical and neural elements of reflex limb control systems. Previous steady state analysis has allowed the neurons in such systems to be categorised by their sensitivity to position, velocity or acceleration (dynamics) and has improved our understanding of network function. These neurons, however, are known to adapt their output amplitude or spike firing rate during repetitive stimulation a

ELLS-NSBA three-stage framework for optimal DG/SC placement and EV integration in distribution networks.

The growing penetration of distributed generation (DG), shunt capacitors (SC), and electric vehicles (EVs) in distribution networks demands optimal siting strategies that balance operational efficiency and structural resilience. Existing metaheuristic approaches treat every bus as equally viable-producing prohibitively large search spaces-and most existing frameworks lack post-optimization structural resilience assessment. This paper proposes a three-stage planning framework addressing both gaps. Stage 1 introduces the Enhanced Laplacian Loss Sensitivity (ELLS) index, which fuses loss sensitiv

Effects of fipronil bait pellets on two cricetid species: Potential implications for plague mitigation and wildlife conservation.

We evaluated the effects of fipronil bait pellets on two cricetids that commonly occupy colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus; BTPDs): western deer mice (Peromyscus sonoriensis) and northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster). In one experiment, bait pellets (0.96 mg fipronil/bait) were applied at 75 baits/ha to three 1.44-ha plots on a BTPD colony. Mouse abundance declined by 70% from before to 6-10 d after treatment. In a second experiment, bait pellets (0.46 or 1.52 mg fipronil/bait) were applied at 125 baits/ha to four plots (0.85-1.86 ha) on two BTPD colonies;

Scavenging by mammalian carnivores on prairie dog colonies: implications for the spread of plague.

Plague causes mass mortality of prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) in shortgrass steppe. Although the pathogen, the bacterium Yersinia pestis, is spread within colonies by flea bites or contact between infected hosts, it is unclear how Y. pestis is transported over long distances between isolated colonies. One possibility is that wideranging, plague-resistant mammalian carnivores pick up fleas when scavenging prairie dog carcasses. Using guinea pigs as surrogates for prairie dogs, we compared how quickly scavengers discovered carcasses on active prairie dog colonies, on colonies recently exti

Fine and distributed subcellular retinotopy of excitatory inputs to the dendritic tree of a collision-detecting neuron.

Individual neurons in several sensory systems receive synaptic inputs organized according to subcellular topographic maps, yet the fine structure of this topographic organization and its relation to dendritic morphology have not been studied in detail. Subcellular topography is expected to play a role in dendritic integration, particularly when dendrites are extended and active. The lobula giant movement detector (LGMD) neuron in the locust visual system is known to receive topographic excitatory inputs on part of its dendritic tree. The LGMD responds preferentially to objects approaching on a

In vivo structure-activity studies on the dark-color-inducing neurohormone of locusts.

In the 11-residue long dark-color-inducing neurohormone (DCIN = [His7]-corazonin), of locusts, from residue 2 to residue 11, one amino acid at each time was substituted by D-phenylalanine (D-Phe). The dark-color-inducing effect of these peptides was investigated in comparison with unaltered DCIN by a bioassay based on nymphs of a DCIN-deficient albino mutant of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria. Substitution of any single amino acid by D-Phe always reduced the activity, but did not abolish it completely. Maximum inactivation was obtained after substitution of Gln4, Ser6, or Trp9. The la

Arthropod toxins as leads for novel insecticides: an assessment of polyamine amides as glutamate antagonists.

In the search for new toxins, preferably with new sites of action, the polyamine amides represent a new class of compounds with potential as insecticides and as pharmaceutical agents due to their antagonism of ligand-gated cation channels. In particular, they are potent antagonists of the L-glutamate receptors of insect skeletal muscle. In this paper, we report on synthetic studies to produce hybrid analogues based upon the argiotoxin spider toxins and philanthotoxin-433 which is obtained from a solitary, parasitic wasp. We speculate upon possible modes and sites of action for these antagonist

Toxicity and pathogenicity of Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum (Deuteromycotina, Hyphomycetes) and fipronil to the fringe-toed lizard Acanthodactylus dumerili (Squamata: Lacertidae).

Reptiles in arid and semiarid zones are frequently exposed to insecticides sprayed to control locusts and grasshoppers. We evaluated the toxicity and pathogenicity of new biological and chemical control agents to the fringe-toed lizard Acanthodactylus dumerili in Mauritania, West Africa. A mycoinsecticide based on spores of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum (isolate IMI 330189, Green Muscle) was tested at high challenge concentrations, using three exposure routes. Thirty-minute inhalation exposure to 3.9 x 10(8) viable conidia/L had no adverse effect. Locomotor ac…

The differential preference of scorpion alpha-toxins for insect or mammalian sodium channels: implications for improved insect control.

Receptor site-3 on voltage-gated sodium channels is targeted by a variety of structurally distinct toxins from scorpions, sea anemones, and spiders whose typical action is the inhibition of sodium current inactivation. This site interacts allosterically with other topologically distinct receptors that bind alkaloids, lipophilic polyether toxins, pyrethroids, and site-4 scorpion toxins. These features suggest that design of insecticides with specificity for site-3 might be rewarding due to the positive cooperativity with other toxins or insecticidal agents. Yet, despite the central role of scor

Postsynaptic block of a glutamatergic synapse by low molecular weight fractions of spider venom.

Fractions of low molecular weight (ca. 600-1000 dalton) isolated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and thin layer chromatography (TLC) from the venoms of the New-World spiders, Argiope trifasciata and Araneus gemma block transmission at glutamatergic nerve-muscle junctions in the locust, Schistocerca gregaria. These fractions are probably small peptides containing phenolic or indolic residues. Their effects on the neurally evoked twitch contraction, the junctional potential to glutamate ionophoresis and the voltage-clamped excitatory postsynaptic current of locust muscle indicat

Design and application of a three-dimensional skeletonized structure for distal radius fracture splinting based on 3D printing technology.

Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are among the most commonly encountered types of fractures in clinical practice. Conventional treatment methods include surgical intervention and traditional small splint fixation following manual reduction based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). However, these conventional small splints do not adequately meet the current demands for personalized and precision medicine. To address this issue, this study proposes a novel personalized distal radius fixation splint utilizing 3D printing technology. Firstly, a customized splint model that conforms to the patient

[The first three Nordic Nobel laureates in physiology or medicine].

Among all the Nobel Laureates in physiology or medicine there are five from Denmark and seven from Sweden. The first three Laureates are presented in this paper. Over 50 years have elapsed since they were awarded and the Nobel archives are now open for scrutiny, providing insight into how the Nobel committee interpreted the instruction given in Nobel's will at that time. Niels Finsen (1860-1904, Nobel Laureate 1903) devoted his short life to a continuous study of the biological effects of sunshine, which resulted in a method aimed at utilizing the bacteriocide properties of sun rays in the tre

Interaction of compass sensing and object-motion detection in the locust central complex.

Goal-directed behavior is often complicated by unpredictable events, such as the appearance of a predator during directed locomotion. This situation requires adaptive responses like evasive maneuvers followed by subsequent reorientation and course correction. Here we study the possible neural underpinnings of such a situation in an insect, the desert locust. As in other insects, its sense of spatial orientation strongly relies on the central complex, a group of midline brain neuropils. The central complex houses sky compass cells that signal the polarization plane of skylight and thus indicate

The role of cyclic nucleotides and calcium in the mediation of the modulatory effects of octopamine on locust skeletal muscle.

The role of cyclic AMP and calcium in the mediation of the effects of octopamine has been investigated in the extensor tibiae muscle of the hind leg of the locust. Elevation of cyclic AMP levels in the preparation by means of the phosphodiesterase inhibitor, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), by means of the diterpene adenylate cyclase activator, forskolin, and by means of cyclic nucleotide analogues mimics the post-synaptic effects of octopamine application at different frequencies of neuronal stimulation. These conditions also mimic the presynaptic effects of octopamine on spontaneous relea

Structural implications on the interaction of scorpion alpha-like toxins with the sodium channel receptor site inferred from toxin iodination and pH-dependent binding.

The alpha-like toxin from the venom of the scorpion Leiurus quinquestriatus hebraeus (Lqh III) binds with high affinity to receptor site 3 on insect sodium channels but does not bind to rat brain synaptosomes. The binding affinity of Lqh III to cockroach neuronal membranes was fivefold higher at pH 6.5 than at pH 7.5. This correlated with an increase in the electropositive charge on the toxin surface resulting from protonation of its four histidines. Radioiodination of Tyr(14) of Lqh III abolished its binding to locust but not cockroach sodium channels, whereas the noniodinated toxin bound equ

Neuropeptides in insect sensory neurones: tachykinin-, FMRFamide- and allatotropin-related peptides in terminals of locust thoracic sensory afferents.

Sensory afferents in the thoracic ganglia of the locust Locusta migratoria were labelled with antisera to different neuropeptides: locustatachykinins, FMRFamide and allatotropin. The locustatachykinin-immunoreactive (LTKIR) sensory fibres were derived from the legs and entered the ventral sensory neuropil of each of the thoracic ganglia via nerve 5. In the thoracic neuropil, the LTKIR sensory fibres formed a distinct plexus of terminations ventrally in the ipsilateral hemisphere. The peripheral cell bodies of the sensory neurones could not be revealed, but lesion experiments indicated that ori

Neuronal nicotinic receptors in the locust Locusta migratoria. Cloning and expression.

We have identified five cDNA clones that encode nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) subunits expressed in the nervous system of the locust Locusta migratoria. Four of the subunits are ligand-binding alpha subunits, and the other is a structural beta subunit. The existence of at least one more nAChR gene, probably encoding a beta subunit, is indicated. Based on Northern analysis and in situ hybridization, the five subunit genes are expressed. localpha1, localpha3, and locbeta1 are the most abundant subunits and are expressed in similar areas of the head ganglia and retina of the adult locu
