Ambiguous presence: Grief and care among healthcare assistants in permanent vegetative state.

Patients in a permanent vegetative state present unique emotional, ethical and relational challenges for those who care for them, whose physical presence yet psychological absence may expose staff to ambiguous loss, vicarious grief and disenfranchized grief. This qualitative study used reflexive thematic analysis to explore the lived experiences of 13 healthcare assistants working in a vegetative-state unit in north-east Italy, drawing on semi-structured interviews about caregiving, emotional burden, grief and anticipatory treatment declarations. Five themes were developed, describing care as

Finnish Parents' Preferences for Online Grief Support Content After a Child's Death.

Online grief support has become a valuable resource for parents coping with the death of a child as it offers accessible and ongoing support during what is often a deeply challenging time. However, the specific content needs within these platforms remain underexplored. This study's purpose was to identify the types of content parents find most helpful in online grief support following the loss of a child. A total of 141 parents in Finland completed an online survey consisting of 62 Likert-scale questions related to their content preferences for grief interventions. The findings revealed that t

Psychosocial Processes Following Child Loss: Grief, Social Support, and Depression in Mothers.

This study examined the relationships among grief, perceived social support, and depression in mothers who experienced the loss of a child. A cross-sectional design was employed with a sample of 300 bereaved mothers (Mage = 36.20, SD = 8.46) residing in Türkiye. Data were collected using the Two-Dimensional Grief Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. A two-step Structural Equation Modeling approach was used to test the proposed model, in which grief was examined as a potential mediator of the relationship between perceived social supp

Grief trajectories after ICU death: Impact of organ donation on family bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Death occurs in 10-30% of ICU admissions worldwide. Bereavement following ICU death is often complex and may lead to elevated grief symptoms, reported in 46-52% of relatives. AIM: To examine emotional responses and grief trajectories over 24 months among relatives exposed or not exposed to the organ donation decision-making process after ICU death. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study was conducted in an academic ICU between November 2018 and August 2022. Relatives of deceased ICU patients were divided into three groups: consent to organ donation, refusal of donation, and

Dysfunctional Pandemic Grief Model Among Nursing Professionals Who Experienced Death of Patients.

Dysfunctional grief was not addressed adequately during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to develop a dysfunctional pandemic grief model specific to healthcare workers who experienced patient deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted an anonymous online survey among 568 nursing professionals who had experienced a patient's death while working at three tertiary-level hospitals. We further assessed psychological status using the Pandemic Grief Scale (PGS) for Healthcare Workers, Pandemic Grief Risk Factors (PGEF), Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS), Grief Support HealthCare Sca

Factors of prolonged-grief-disorder symptom trajectories for ICU bereaved family surrogates.

BACKGROUND: Bereaved people experience distinct trajectories of prolonged-grief-disorder (PGD) symptoms. A few studies from outside critical care investigated limited factors of PGD-symptom trajectories without a theoretical framework. We aimed to characterize factors associated with ICU bereaved surrogates' PGD-symptom trajectories, drawing from the integrative framework of predictors for bereavement outcomes, emphasizing factors modifiable by ICU care. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of 291 family surrogates. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine associations of three prev

'Migration and grief go hand in hand' a qualitative analysis of losses and grief among first - and second-generation individuals with Turkish migration history in Germany through the lens of the minority stress model.

Background: Individuals with migration history from Türkiye form one of the largest migrant communities in Germany, comprising around 1.5 million first generation migrants and 1.4 million second generation individuals born in Germany. Research indicates that both migration-related and contextual factors (e.g. discrimination and stigma) are linked to elevated psychological distress in this group. While these experiences can be understood within the framework of minority stress, little is known about how migration-related losses and grief intersect with such stress processes in this population.M

Prolonged grief disorder in end-of-life care: current literature and future directions.

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a recognized distinct mental health disorder in the DSM-5-TR and ICD-11, characterized by core symptoms such as longing for and preoccupation with the deceased that persist and worsen over time. Family members and caregivers of patients that receive end-of-life care are confronted with imminent bereavement, which emphasizes the importance of bereavement care as a preventive measure and the need for continued support after death beyond the hospital setting. This review discusses bereaved family members' and caregivers' risk factors of developing PGD, screening

Identifying risk factors of acute and prolonged grief using large-scale survey data.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement can precipitate severe acute grief. If such grief reactions persist beyond six months post-loss, they may develop into prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Charting risk factors of severe grief before and beyond six months post-loss is critical to help identify people who may benefit from preventative and curative interventions for PGD. METHODS: Bereaved adults <6 months post-loss (N = 2450) and ≥ 6 months post-loss (N = 3609) completed an online survey. We assessed demographic variables (age, gender), loss characteristics (e.g., cause of death, relationship to the deceased

Silent burdens: global perspectives on grief and psychological strain among neuro-oncology neurosurgeons.

Neuro-oncology neurosurgeons (NONs) manage patients with progressive neurological decline, make high-stakes decisions, and face repeated exposure to death. While burnout has been recognized as a significant concern, grief and psychological strain remain underexplored as related, partly overlapping phenomena. To address this gap, we convened an exploratory international cohort of NONs to develop a dialogue-informed perspective on grief. Insights from semistructured roundtable discussions were used to explore how grief and psychological strain are experienced, their key triggers, coping approach

Bittersweet encounters. A qualitative exploration of parents' unexplainable grief experiences after child loss.

When a loved one dies, some grievers report experiencing phenomena for which no rational explanation seems to exist. This qualitative study, based on a secondary analysis of interview data, aimed to contribute to a deeper understanding of the value and meaning of unexplainable grief experiences for 23 parents who lost a child to cancer and to integrate these insights into bereavement support. Many cancer-bereaved parents had a variety of unexplainable experiences, and none of them gave the impression that they had to hide or suppress these experiences because of perceived stigma. Although thes

Is COVID-19 loss more associated with prolonged grief disorder than other losses?

The COVID-19 pandemic raised fears about a rise in prolonged grief rates. To determine if these fears are justified, we examined an online sample of 329 Turkish adults for their level of prolonged grief symptoms (as well as probable Prolonged Grief Disorder-PGD) and associated factors in relation to losses during the pandemic. Respondents completed measures of prolonged grief, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression. Overall, 10% of participants reported symptoms indicating a probable PGD diagnosis. Surprisingly, loss due to COVID-19 or disruption of the natural mourning process did not

Grief Intervention in Suicide Loss Survivors through Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: A Systematic Review.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, affecting numerous individuals close to the person who died by suicide, including family members, friends, and colleagues. Those affected by the suicide of someone are referred to as "suicide survivors", and the psychological consequences they face are particularly severe. One of these consequences is grief, which is more complicated in survivors of suicide compared with those grieving deaths from other causes, mainly because of the stigma that continues to surround them. Therefore, psychotherapeutic intervention for suicide loss survivo

Narrative reconstruction therapy for prolonged grief disorder: Basic interventions and mechanisms of change.

Narrative reconstruction is a time-limited integrative therapy, originally developed in the context of post-traumatic stress disorder and adjusted for the treatment of prolonged grief disorder (PGD). It consists of exposure to the loss memory and narrating a detailed written reconstruction of it. In this paper, we describe narrative reconstruction interventions and modifications for the treatment of PGD as well as the underlying mechanisms of change including integration of the loss episode into the life narrative. A case demonstration of narrative reconstruction with a patient with PGD presen

Personality and Grief-Related Panic Attacks: Analysis of Neuroticism, Worry, and Anxiety Sensitivity.

Grief-related panic attacks (GRPAs) are a relatively common yet debilitating psychological reaction to loss, the mechanisms of which remain poorly understood among scholars. The purpose of this study was to identify the personality traits that underlie GRPAs in a sample of 314 bereaved adults. The results indicate that GRPAs were relatively common (55.4%) and that anxiety sensitivity uniquely predicted both frequency and impairment associated with these kinds of attacks, while taking into account the effects of neuroticism, trait worry, grief, and gender. Findings suggest that anxiety sensitiv
