Nail cosmetics.

The nail as an anatomic structure protects the terminal phalanx of the digit from injury. Historically, it has served as a tool for protection and for survival. As civilizations developed, it attained the additional function of adornment. Nail beautification is a big industry today, with various nail cosmetics available, ranging from nail hardeners, polishes, extensions, artificial/sculpted nails, and nail decorations. Adverse events may occur either during the nail-grooming procedure or as a reaction to the individual components of the nail cosmetics. This holds true for both the client and t

Spontaneous open-field behavior in thiamin-deficient rats.

Open-field testing has proven useful for evaluation of the effects of drugs on behavior. We now present detailed methods for subdividing open-field behaviors into four categories: sniffing, grooming, resting, and staring. Upon initial exposure to the open field, sniffing is the predominant behavior. With habituation, sniffing and grooming decrease, and resting and staring increase. Treatment with a thiamin-deficient diet and pyrithiamin, a centrally acting thiamin antagonist, markedly increases staring behavior by day 3 of treatment. Animals that are treated with a thiamin-deficient diet and o

A basolateral amygdala to dorsolateral striatum projection modulates stimulus-evoked motor behavior.

The dorsal striatum is divided into dorsomedial (DMS) and dorsolateral (DLS) subregions, which support distinct aspects of motor learning. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) encodes emotionally salient information and can influence striatal function, but its connection to the sensorimotor DLS remains poorly understood. Using mice, we identify a direct, functional BLA-DLS projection that arises from a neuronal population distinct from BLA neurons projecting to the DMS. Although sparser than BLA-DMS inputs, BLA-DLS synapses preferentially targeted the distal dendrites of striatal projection neurons,

Mirtazapine, a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant, attenuates morphine dependence and withdrawal in Sprague-Dawley rats.

The effects of mirtazapine, a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant, on morphine withdrawal and morphine conditioned place preference (CPP) were investigated in rats. Our results showed that some morphine withdrawal signs, including teeth chattering, grooming, chewing, and escape attendance, were attenuated by single pretreatments with 3, 10, or 30 mg/kg mirtazapine. Wet-dog shakes, rearing, and grooming were inhibited by daily pretreatment with 1, 3, or 10 mg/kg mirtazapine. The expression of morphine-induced CPP was significantly blocked by mirtazapine (10 or 30 mg/kg, i.p.)

Effects of SCH 32615, an enkephalinase inhibitor, on D-1 and D-2 dopamine receptor-mediated behaviors.

Striatal enkephalin-containing neurons receive dopaminergic inputs from the substantia nigra and project to the external segment of globus pallidus. These neurons express primarily dopamine (DA) D-2 receptors. Accordingly, stimulation of enkephalinergic transmission might be expected to influence mainly D-2 receptor agonist or antagonist effects on motor function. To test this hypothesis, the effects of SCH 32615, an enkephalinase inhibitor, on DA antagonist-induced catalepsy, DA D-1 agonist-induced non-stereotyped grooming, and DA D-2 agonist-induced stereotyped behavior were studied. The adm

Psilocybin modulates social behaviour in male and female mice in a time-dependent manner.

With the resurgence of psychedelic research and growing evidence of their therapeutic potential, there is an urgent need to understand how these compounds act across biological sexes. Despite widespread interest in their use for conditions marked by social impairments, including depression, anxiety, and anorexia nervosa, the influence of sex as a biological variable on the prosocial effects of psychedelics remains poorly understood. Indeed, enhanced connectedness, sociability and empathy are common outcomes of psychedelic use and these have shaped human social structures for millennia. Here, w

Post adversity changes in nigro-striatal dopamine: A mechanism for anxiety induced exacerbated innate repetitive behaviors.

Anxiety exacerbates symptoms in various psychiatric disorders. In conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or Tourette syndrome, anxiety intensifies stereotypic and repetitive behaviors. Rodent self-grooming, a structured, repetitive innate behavior, serves as an effective rodent platform for studying these behaviors in neuropsychiatric research. Anxiety is also linked to altered functioning of the dopamine (DA) system, particularly within the substantia-nigra pars compacta (SNc), the main DA source to the dorsal striatum through the nigro-striatal pathway. Striatal modulation by

Neonatal handling enhances behavioural and attentional domains, and frontocortical synaptic maturation in rat models of schizophrenia-like behaviour and anxiety-related responses.

The Roman inbred rat strains are a neurodevelopmental model, with the Roman High Avoidance (RHA) presenting specific behaviours and frontal cortex (FC) gene expression changes relevant to schizophrenia symptoms. We wanted to assess the potentially positive modulatory and enduring effects of neonatal handling (NH) on the innate traits associated with both the RHA and their counterpart Roman Low Avoidance (RLA). Male rats received NH or were left untreated (controls). Two different age groups were considered: adolescent and adults. The assessment encompassed exploratory behaviour, social behavio

Prenatal folate deficiency impairs sociability and memory/recognition in mice offspring.

Folate is essential for the normal growth and development of the fetus. Folic acid supplementation during the fetal period affects postnatal brain development and reduces the incidence of mental disorders in animal and human studies. However, the association between folate deficiency (FD) during pregnancy and developmental disorders in children remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated whether prenatal FD is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. ICR mice were fed a control diet (2 mg folic acid/kg diet) or a folate-deficient diet (0.3 mg folic acid/kg diet)

Functional analysis of the rat soft palate by real-time wireless electromyography.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the function of the palatal muscles in vivo by real-time wireless electromyography in rats. The effects of palatal wounding were also analyzed. METHODS: Microelectrodes were implanted six rats; in the masseter muscle (two-rats) for comparison, in the unwounded soft palate (two-rats) and the soft palate that received a surgical wound (two-rats). Two weeks after implantation, a wound was made in the soft palate using a 1 mm biopsy-punch. Electromyographic measurements and video-recordings were taken weekly to monitor train-duration and peak-amplit

Behavioral flexibility in a mouse model for obsessive-compulsive disorder: Impaired Pavlovian reversal learning in SAPAP3 mutants.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by obsessive thinking, compulsive behavior and anxiety, and is often accompanied by cognitive deficits. The neuropathology of OCD involves dysregulation of cortical-striatal circuits. Similar to OCD patients, SAPAP3 knockout mice 3 (SAPAP3-/- ) exhibit compulsive behavior (grooming), anxiety and dysregulated cortical-striatal function. However, it is unknown whether SAPAP3-/- display cognitive deficits and how these different behavioral traits relate to one another. SAPAP3-/- and wild-type (WT) littermates were trained in a Pavlovian conditi

Behavioral responses to tooth loss in wild ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) at the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, Madagascar.

Severe dental wear and tooth loss is often assumed to impede the processing, breakdown, and energetic conversion of food items, thereby negatively impacting individual health, reproduction, and survival. Ring-tailed lemurs at the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve demonstrate exceptionally high frequencies of severe dental wear and antemortem tooth loss, yet often survive multiple years with these impairments. To test the hypothesis that these lemurs mitigate tooth loss through behavioral adjustments, we collected 191 h of observational data from 16 focal subjects, eight without tooth loss and eigh

Ethological resolution of behavioural topography and D1-like versus D2-like agonist responses in congenic D5 dopamine receptor mutants: identification of D5:D2-like interactions.

The phenotypic ethogram of congenic dopamine D(5) receptor "knockout" mice was evaluated. Each individual topography of behaviour within the natural repertoire was assessed over the extended course of initial exploration of and subsequent habituation to the environment, and following challenge with a series of D(1)-like agonists. Over initial exploration, D(5)-null mice evidenced a modest reduction in locomotion and a modest increase in sifting. Subsequent habituation revealed additional phenotypic effects, primarily overall reduction in grooming and delayed habituation of rearing. Among D(1)-

Electrode positioning for reliable telemetry ECG recordings during social stress in unrestrained rats.

We describe a surgical procedure for optimizing the location of telemetry ECG leads in rats. The new location was aimed at obtaining an accurate representation of ECG features throughout the cardiac cycle by limiting the voltage instability usually observed during intense somatomotor activity and improving the signal-to-noise ratio. The two electrodes (wire loops) were fixed on the dorsal surface of the xiphoid process and in the anterior mediastinum close to the right atrium. The implantation procedure was fast, little invasive, and allowed animals to completely recover from intervention. The

Ninjin'yoeito ameliorates deficits in self-care behaviors in a polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid-induced fatigue model via dopamine D2 receptor activation.

Fatigue is induced by physical and mental overload and decreases activity, motivation, and judgment, interfering with daily life. An association between fatigue and prolonged activation of the immune system has been suggested. However, the detailed underlying mechanisms are unknown, and effective treatments for fatigue have not been established. Ninjin'yoeito, a Kampo medicine, reportedly improves anorexia and fatigue scores. In this study, we examined the anti-fatigue effects of Ninjin'yoeito extract powder (NYT) in a polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly[I:C])-induced mouse model of inflamma

Involvement of Lateral Habenula Dysfunction in Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury-Induced Motivational Deficits.

Affective disorders including depression (characterized by reduced motivation, social withdrawal, and anhedonia), anxiety, and irritability are frequently reported as long-term consequences of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in addition to cognitive deficits, suggesting a possible dysregulation within mood/motivational neural circuits. One of the important brain regions that control motivation and mood is the lateral habenula (LHb), whose hyperactivity is associated with depression. Here, we used a repetitive closed-head injury mTBI model that is associated with social deficits in adult mal

Norepinephrine and dopamine contribute to distinct repetitive behaviors induced by novel odorant stress in male and female mice.

Exposure to unfamiliar odorants induces an array of repetitive defensive and non-defensive behaviors in rodents which likely reflect adaptive stress responses to the uncertain valence of novel stimuli. Mice genetically deficient for dopamine β-hydroxylase (Dbh-/-) lack the enzyme required to convert dopamine (DA) into norepinephrine (NE), resulting in globally undetectable NE and supranormal DA levels. Because catecholamines modulate novelty detection and reactivity, we investigated the effects of novel plant-derived odorants on repetitive behaviors in Dbh-/- mice and Dbh+/- littermate control

Chronic mild stress induces differential depression-like symptoms and c-Fos and 5HT1A protein levels in high-anxiety female Long Evans rats.

Depression and anxiety disorders overlap in clinical populations, suggesting common mechanisms that may be further investigated in reliable animal models. Different responses of repetitive behaviours in juvenile and young adult mice to Δ9 -tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol may affect decision making for Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Medicinal cannabis is in increasing use by patients with Tourette syndrome, a neuropsychiatric disorder that affects about 1% of the general population and has a childhood onset. However, the pharmacological effects of Δ9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9 -THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) have not been systematically screened or compared between juvenile and young adult rodents in a model of Tourette syndrome. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: The administration of 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI) increases head twitch response (HTR) and ear scratch response (ESR) and has been proposed as
