Effect of Interlocking Mode on the Outcomes of Exchange Nailing for the Treatment of Aseptic Femoral Shaft Nonunion.

BACKGROUND: Exchange nailing is a standard treatment for femoral shaft nonunion after intramedullary nailing. However, substantial uncertainty and controversy remain regarding the mode of interlocking fixation. This study aimed to compare the success rate and time to union of exchange nailing based on interlocking modes. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed all consecutive patients who underwent exchange nailing for aseptic femoral shaft nonunion between February 2000 and February 2021. Patients who underwent exchange nailing using the dynamically locked mode and statically locked mode consti

Multi-scale modeling of cholera dynamics in a spatially heterogeneous environment.

We propose a multi-group, multi-scale mathematical model to investigate the betweenhost and within-host dynamics of cholera. At the between-host level, we divide the total population into a number of host groups with different characteristics representing spatial heterogeneity. Our model incorporates the dual transmission pathways that include both the environment-to-human and human-to-human transmission routes. At the within-host level, our model describes the interaction among the pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and host immune response. For each host group, we couple the between-host disease

Targeting SPHK1 by 8-HETrE attenuates MASH-Driven fibrosis via restoration of hepatic stellate cell mitochondrial dynamics.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) drives hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation and extracellular matrix deposition, leading to liver fibrosis, for which effective treatments remain lacking. Here, we report that 8-hydroxyoctacosatrienoic acid (8-HETrE), an arachidonic acid metabolite generated through cytochrome P450 or lipoxygenase pathways, significantly ameliorates MASH-related fibrosis by targeting sphingosine kinase 1 (SPHK1) and restoring mitochondrial function. Clinical observations revealed markedly reduced circulating 8-HETrE levels in patients with MASH fibrosis

[Dynamic stretching promotes osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in three-dimensional culture].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the promotion of dynamic distraction on osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMMSCs) in three-dimensional culture. METHODS: Dynamic stretching in a three-dimensional culture for hBMMSCs was achieved with proportions set at 5%, 10%, and 20%, a frequency of 0.5 Hz, and a dynamic stretching duration of 2 hours per day. Static culture was used as the control group. Deformation of hBMMSCs induced by dynamic stretching was observed through cytoplasmic fluorescence staining. After 7 days of dynamic stretching culture, the impact of dynamic st

[The dynamics of the immunocytoadherence test with Trichinella spiralis-antigen in the experimental rabbit trichinellosis (author's transl)].

The authors analysed the dynamics of the immunozytoadherence test in experimental trichinellosis. The evaluation was carried out by mixing the lymphocytes of the infected rabbits with sheep erythrocytes encoated with antigen Trichinella spiralis. In three groups of infected rabbits (group I - 15 000 larves per rabbit, group II - 20 000 larves per rabbit, group III - 30 000 larves per rabbit) the examinations were performed 3, 6, 10, 20, 47, 82, 110, 140, 170 and 230 days after infection. It was observed that the maximum percentage of rosette occurred 10 days after infection. In the course of t

Electrodermal signatures of stress during tactical law enforcement training.

Law enforcement tactical training places sustained cognitive and emotional demands on recruits, making stress regulation a critical determinant of learning and performance. This study examined EDA as an objective index of stress regulation during standardized law enforcement scenarios. Objectives were to 1) predict individual change in tactical performance from electrodermal dynamics, 2) test whether a breathing-based intervention produces different pre- to post-physiological change than standard training across the full scenario periods, and 3) quantify peri-threat EDA dynamics during threat

Discovery of Novel N-Sulfonamide-tetrahydroquinolines as Potent Retinoic Acid Receptor-Related Orphan Receptor γt (RORγt) Inverse Agonists for the Treatment of Psoriasis.

Guided by the mode of action of 13, our previously discovered RORγt inverse agonist, we conducted five rounds of design syntheses and structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies, ultimately identifying RORγt inverse agonist 5a, which exhibited superior in vitro activity compared to 13. Besides, 5a showed promising therapeutic effects in alleviating psoriasis in mice by intraperitoneal injection. Due to the high lipophilicity and in vitro pharmacokinetic properties of 5a, it was formulated into an ointment, which enabled effective skin retention and mitigated systemic side effects. The ointme

Symmetry-Orchestrated Spin Relaxation in Bilayer CrI3: A Time-Domain ab initio Study.

The magnetic symmetry of van der Waals (vdW) magnets guides their fundamental properties. Bilayer CrI3 presents an ideal prototype for investigating symmetry-tailored spin dynamics. However, the influence of varying magnetic space group symmetries on spin dynamics remains elusive. Here, we employ ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics to unravel the magnetic symmetry-orchestrated hole relaxation in bilayer ferromagnetic CrI3. Our results indicate that magnetic symmetry modulates interlayer coupling and electron-phonon scattering, altering scattering channels and thereby coupling the hole re

Discrete neocortical dynamics predict behavioral categorization of sounds.

The ability to group stimuli into perceptual categories is essential for efficient interaction with the environment. Discrete dynamics that emerge in brain networks are believed to be the neuronal correlate of category formation. Observations of such dynamics have recently been made; however, it is still unresolved if they actually match perceptual categories. Using in vivo two-photon calcium imaging in the auditory cortex of mice, we show that local network activity evoked by sounds is constrained to few response modes. Transitions between response modes are characterized by an abrupt switch,

Impact of upper blepharoplasty, with or without orbicularis oculi muscle removal, on tear film dynamics and dry eye symptoms: A randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Upper blepharoplasty may be related to dry eye symptoms since the function of the orbicularis oculi muscle may affect the tear film. We aimed to assess the effect of blepharoplasty with or without the removal of a strip of orbicularis oculi muscle on tear film dynamics and dry eye symptoms. METHODS: A double-blind, randomized, controlled trial comparing upper blepharoplasty without (group A) or with (group B) orbicularis oculi muscle excision was performed on 54 healthy Caucasian patients. Tear film dynamics and dry eye symptoms were evaluated using multiple dry eye parameters, i.e.

Collective dynamics of sperm cells.

While only a single sperm may fertilize the egg, getting to the egg can be facilitated, and possibly enhanced, by sperm group dynamics. Examples range from the trains formed by wood mouse sperm to the bundles exhibited by echidna sperm. In addition, observations of wave-like patterns exhibited by ram semen are used to score prospective sample fertility for artificial insemination in agriculture. In this review, we discuss these experimental observations of collective dynamics, as well as describe recent mechanistic models that link the motion of individual sperm cells and their flagella to obs

To eat and not be eaten: modelling resources and safety in multi-species animal groups.

Using mixed-species bird flocks as an example, we model the payoffs for two types of species from participating in multi-species animal groups. Salliers feed on mobile prey, are good sentinels and do not affect prey capture rates of gleaners; gleaners feed on prey on substrates and can enhance the prey capture rate of salliers by flushing prey, but are poor sentinels. These functional types are known from various animal taxa that form multi-species associations. We model costs and benefits of joining groups for a wide range of group compositions under varying abundances of two types of prey-pr

Dynamic study of oxyhemoglobin in traumatic shock.

The dynamic study of oxyhemoglobin in general, and especially in traumatic shock, represents one of the aspects of pathophysiology which is of interest to practitioners as well as to pathophysiologists due to its relatively practical accessibility. The study was performed on two groups of 30 subjects: a healthy subjects group and a control group. The patients hospitalized in the Intensive Care Section of the Clinical Hospital Department of Constanţa represented the subjects of the control group. Using an Oximeter--AVL 912 oxylite, the arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation, venous hemoglobin ox

Aortoiliac fenestrated stent demonstrates superior flow dynamics to kissing iliac stents in a large animal.

OBJECTIVE: Current endovascular treatment of aortoiliac occlusive disease with kissing iliac stents has suboptimal long-term patency and durability secondary to pathologic flow fields. The aortoiliac fenestrated (AIFEN) stent was previously introduced to provide an anatomically preserving endovascular therapy that may improve flow dynamics compared with kissing iliac stents. The aim of this study was to compare flow dynamics between the AIFEN stent and conventional kissing iliac stents in vivo in an adult porcine model. METHODS: AIFEN stents were manufactured via benchtop modification of stan

Effect of weight bearing on recovery from nerve injury in skeletal muscle.

We examined the effect of weight bearing (WB) on muscle recovery after nerve injury. Rats were housed in individual cages for 2 wk under WB or hindlimb suspension (HS) after being subjected to sciatic nerve compression for 1 wk. Sham operated on rats served as controls (sham group). We used 31P- and 19F-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy combined with histochemical, physiological, and biochemical techniques to assess the outcome in the three groups. Creatine kinase-BB (CK-BB) mRNA levels expression, CK activity, and type I fiber density in the WB group were elevated compared with those in

Clinical significance of mitochondrial dynamics-related miRNAs in the superacute phase of acute heart failure in patients presenting to the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondria are dynamic organelles whose morphology can change through fusion and fission. The role of these mitochondrial dynamics in cardiomyocytes has not been evaluated in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). METHODS AND RESULTS: Two hundred seventy-three AHF patients and 374 control patients who attended a cardiovascular outpatient clinic were prospectively analyzed. Blood samples were collected within 15 min of admission from AHF patients (AHF group) and control patients who visited a daily cardiovascular outpatient clinic (control group). Mitochondrial dynamics-related

Individual Autonomic Profiles Influence Brain-Heart Connectivity in Tonic Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Acute pain elicits distinct autonomic responses. Electroencephalography (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV) provide insights into autonomic and cortical activity to pain, but they often fail to capture the integrated dynamics of brain-heart connectivity. This exploratory study used raw electrocardiogram (ECG) and EEG signals to investigate brain-heart coherence during resting and tonic experimental pain, aiming to detect direct electrical coupling patterns, and explored the influence of individual autonomic response in healthy participants. METHODS: EEG, raw ECG data and HRV

[Affective phases in dynamics of personality disorders (on a model of borderline personality disorder)].

Affective phases developing in personality disorder (index-sample--98 patients) were compared to those in cyclothymia (85 patients--control group). A preference of phase dynamics in the group of abnormalities relating to ICD-10 item "Borderline personality disorder" was confirmed. In line with a concept considering personality disorders as clinical syndromes, patients of the index-group have personality disorders with the signs of psychopathological diathesis determined by vulnerability to affective disorders. Affective phases are interpreted not only as an expression of a specific type of per

EEG microstates during wake and NREM sleep in insomnia disorder.

Insomnia disorder (ID) is prevalent and debilitating, yet its neurophysiological basis remains unclear. Abnormalities in temporal parameters of electroencephalography (EEG) microstates have been linked to diverse neuropsychiatric disorders, but their dynamics across wakefulness and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in chronic insomnia remain unexplored. In this study, EEG microstate dynamics across wakefulness and NREM sleep were examined in adults with ID (n = 33) and healthy controls (HC; n = 29). Simultaneous EEG and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) were acquired during noctur
