Raise Your Voice: How to Increase the Effectiveness of Resident and Family Councils in Long-Term Care Homes.

The devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the missing voices of families and residents in long-term care (LTC) decision-making and policy processes. Family and resident councils constitute one method of raising these voices, but there is currently a gap in evidence of how to promote the effectiveness of these councils. We conducted five focus groups and two interviews with LTC home leaders, residents, family members, and advocates in British Columbia using a participatory approach integrating knowledge-users throughout the research process. Using a framework analysis, we fou

A Phase II randomised controlled trial assessing the feasibility, acceptability and potential effectiveness of dignity therapy for older people in care homes: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Although most older people living in nursing homes die there, there is a dearth of robust evaluations of interventions to improve their end-of-life care. Residents usually have multiple health problems making them heavily reliant on staff for their care, which can erode their sense of dignity. Dignity Therapy has been developed to help promote dignity and reduce distress. It comprises a recorded interview, which is transcribed, edited then returned to the patient, who can bequeath it to people of their choosing. Piloting has suggested that Dignity Therapy is beneficial to people dy

Type 1 Diabetes in care homes: A practical guide on management.

The primary purpose of the original NAPCHD project was to develop a national Strategic Document of Diabetes Care for Care Homes which has now been completed and well received as a worthwhile, sustainable, and effective guidance for delivering quality diabetes care in the UK. A Working Group of NAPCHD was established to produce a Position Statement on type 1 diabetes in care homes since this area was recommended as a topic to further develop. There are currently limited data on the prevalence and clinical outcomes associated with type 1 diabetes in care homes and management policies have been n

Social connection in long-term care homes: a qualitative study of barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Social connection is a basic human need and is essential to quality of life. It is associated with better mental and physical health outcomes for long-term care (LTC) home residents and is a key aspect of quality of care and person-centred care. There are considerations for LTC homes that may present obstacles to and opportunities for social connection. It is therefore important to understand what restricts or enables good social connection in LTC homes, to guide better quality care and future interventions in this population. This qualitative study aims to identify barriers and fa

The impact of nursing home residency on psychotropic drug use in major neurocognitive disorder: A nationwide comparison.

INTRODUCTION: Psychotropic drugs are utilized against neuropsychiatric symptoms among people with major neurocognitive disorder (NCD) despite well-documented risks, and older people in nursing homes are expected to be more frequently exposed to those medicines. This study compared psychotropic drug use and associated factors between older people with major NCD and matched references. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included individuals from three national registries in Sweden. References were randomly matched 1:1 by age and sex from the Swedish Total Population Register. Drug use was defi

How and why educational interventions work to increase knowledge of delirium among healthcare professionals in nursing homes: a protocol for a realist review.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a neuropathological condition that impairs cognitive performance, attention and consciousness and can be potentially life-threatening. Nursing home residents are particularly vulnerable to developing delirium, but research thus far tends to focus on the acute hospital setting. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in nursing homes seem to be little aware of delirium. To improve healthcare for affected or at-risk individuals, increasing knowledge among HCPs is highly relevant. Using the realist review method helps to understand how and why an educational intervention f

Practices and perspectives on dying at home in Norwegian home care services - a secondary analysis of qualitative data.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing recognition that individuals of all ages with life-limiting conditions benefit from palliative care. Despite a preference for dying at home, most patients still spend their final days in hospital. The WHO encourages member states to integrate palliative care across all levels of their health system. AIM: This study aims to explore how home care services in a Norwegian municipality implement practices that enable patients to die at home, and how healthcare professionals experience these practices. METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted using qualitative da

Identification of Training Needs and Development of a Work-Integrated Training Program for Aged Care On-Site Pharmacists: Protocol for a Co-Design Study.

BACKGROUND: From July 2024, Australian pharmacists are remunerated through federal funding to practice on-site within aged care homes. This Aged Care On-site Pharmacist (ACOP) program is novel in both Australian and international practice, aiming to improve the quality use of medicines for vulnerable older persons through medicines governance, person-centered medication reviews, and more. In this program, pharmacists are embedded in facilities and health care teams, varying from historical Australian models where they are visiting health care professionals. Distinct from pharmacist practice in

Home health aides' perspectives towards achieving cardiovascular health and life's essential 8: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite frequently providing care to adults with cardiovascular (CV) disease in the home, home health aides and attendants (HHAs) have poor CV health (CVH) themselves, which is problematic for their own health and potentially their patients. We elicited the perspectives of HHAs towards achieving optimal CVH, including the American Heart Association’s (AHA’s) Life’s Essential 8 (LE8). METHOD: We conducted focus groups and interviews with HHAs from January 2023 to January 2024 in partnership with the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Fund, a benefit fund of the largest healthcare unio

Youth Reported Perpetrators of Victimization Within a Foster Care Sample.

Maltreatment type, severity, and chronicity are predictors of poor youth outcomes, yet youth reported perpetrators of abuse have gone largely unstudied. Little is known about variation in perpetration across youth characteristics (e.g., age, gender, placement type) and abuse features. This study aims to describe youth reported perpetrators of victimization within a foster care sample. 503 youth in foster care (ages 8-21 years) reported on experiences of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. Follow up questions assessed abuse frequency and perpetrators. Mann-Whitney U Tests were used to co
