Role of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor (PPARγ) in Metabolic Disorders in SGA with Catch-Up Growth.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal fat metabolism is a major disorder in adults who were small for gestational age (SGA). Peroxisome prolferator-activated receptor (PPARγ) participates in adipocyte differentiation and the regulation of lipid metabolism. This study explored the role of PPARγ in the regulation of fat catch-up growth (CUG) and the lipid metabolism of SGA individuals. METHODS: The CUG-SGA rats were treated with pioglitazone. The weight of the visceral adipose tissue, serum lipid levels, and PPARγ expression in the visceral adipose tissue were detected at 4, 8, and 12 weeks of age. RESULTS: The

Prognosis of physiological disorders in physic nut to N, P, and K deficiency during initial growth.

The description of physiological disorders in physic nut plants deficient in nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) may help to predict nutritional imbalances before the appearance of visual symptoms and to guide strategies for early nutrient supply. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of physic nuts (Jatropha curcas L.) during initial development by analyzing the gas exchange parameters, nutrient uptake and use efficiency, as well as the nitrate reductase and acid phosphatase activities and polyamine content. Plants were grown in a complete nutrient solution and solutions

Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 and Related Compounds in the Treatment of Childhood-Onset Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) is a neurotrophic polypeptide with crucial roles to play in Central Nervous System (CNS) growth, development and maturation. Following interrogation of the neurobiology underlying several neurodevelopmental disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), both recombinant IGF-1 (mecasermin) and related derivatives, such as (1-3)IGF-1, have emerged as potential therapeutic approaches. Clinical pilot studies and early reports have supported the safety/preliminary efficacy of IGF-1 and related compounds in the treatment of Rett Syndrome, with evidence mounting f

Growth associated protein (GAP-43): cloning and the development of a sensitive ELISA for neurological disorders.

GAP-43 has been studied in the rodent and mammalian brain and shown to be present specifically in areas undergoing axonal elongation and synapse formation. GAP-43 was cloned using the baculovirus expression system and purified. A sandwich ELISA was developed using the recombinant GAP-43 as standard and validated. CSF GAP-43 levels were analysed in benign intracranial hypertension, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, CNS infections, motor neuron disease, and headache (neurological controls). GAP-43 levels were low in all disorders analysed (in particular motor neuron disease; p=

Regulation of phosphate transport by fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23): implications for disorders of phosphate metabolism.

There are a number of hypophosphatemic disorders due to renal phosphate wasting that cannot be explained by elevated levels of parathyroid hormone. The circulating factors responsible for the phosphaturia have been designated as phosphatonins. Studies of patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia and other genetic diseases of phosphate metabolism have resulted in the identification of a number of hormones that regulate phosphate homeostasis, including matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein (MEPE), secreted frizzled-related protein 4 (sFRP-4), dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1), fibroblast growth f

C-kit mutations and mast cell disorders. A model of activating mutations of growth factor receptors.

Mastocytosis are a group of diseases characterized by abnormal proliferation of mast cells. Various forms are observed in respect to the organ system involving, clinical manifestations, and association with hematological disorders. The c-kit proto-oncogene encodes for a receptor tyrosine kinase, which plays a crucial role in hematopoiesis, especially in mast cell growth and differentiation. Mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain of c-kit have been reported in murine and human malignant cell lines, and more recently in some cases of human mast cell diseases. The biochemical and clinical aspect

Platelet-derived growth factor concentrations in platelet-poor plasma and urine from patients with myeloproliferative disorders.

Our enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for measuring human platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) detects nanogram quantities (ranging from 0.007 to 16 ng/100 microL) in purified PDGF standards. This assay is sensitive enough for studying plasma and urine. The range in normal volunteers was 0.6 to 2.3 micrograms/L for platelet-poor plasma and 1.4 to 3.3 micrograms/L for urine. We determined PDGF levels in the circulation (outside platelets) in patients with myeloproliferative diseases. Platelet-poor plasma and urine PDGF were significantly elevated in patients with myelofibrosis (6.2 +/-

Platelet-derived growth factor BB: A potential diagnostic blood biomarker for differentiating bipolar disorder from major depressive disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is frequently misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD) due to overlapping depressive symptoms. This study investigated whether serum platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) is a differential diagnostic biomarker for BD and MDD. An initial SOMAscan proteomics assay of 1311 proteins in small samples from patients with BD and MDD and healthy controls (HCs) suggested that serum levels of PDGF-BB differed between BD and MDD. We then conducted a two-step, exploratory, cross-sectional, case-control study at our institute and five sites that included a total of 549 par

Beyond fear and survival: Complex post-traumatic stress disorder, emotion regulation, and post-traumatic growth in substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: The reconceptualization of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) has changed how we view substance use disorders (SUDs), highlighting trauma and maladaptive emotion regulation over vulnerability or environment. Trauma-related disorders are common in those with SUDs, but research in India is limited, especially since cPTSD was added to ICD-11. AIM: This study examined the links between cPTSD symptoms, emotion regulation, and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in SUD patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary addiction treatment center in India. For

The Insulin-like Growth Factor Family as a Potential Peripheral Biomarker in Psychiatric Disorders: A Systematic Review.

Psychiatric disorders (PDs), including schizophrenia (SZ), major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), among other disorders, represent a significant global health burden. Despite advancements in understanding their biological mechanisms, there is still no reliable objective and reliable biomarker; therefore, diagnosis remains largely reliant on subjective clinical assessments. Peripheral biomarkers in plasma or serum are interesting due to their accessibility, low cost, and potential to reflect central nervous system processes. Among these, the insu
