Differences in Functional Activity and Connectivity in the Right Frontoparietal Network between Nurses Working Long-Term Shifts and Fixed Day Shifts.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the differences in functional brain activity and connectivity between nurses working long-term shifts and fixed day shift and explore their correlations with work-related psychological conditions. METHODS: Thirty-five nurses working long-term shifts and 35 nurses working fixed day shifts were recruited. After assessing work-related psychological conditions, such as burnout and perceived stress of these two groups of nurses, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) analyses were performed to investigate the between-group differe

Plasma oxidative stress marker levels related to functional brain abnormalities in first-episode drug-naive major depressive disorder.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is marked by abnormal brain function and elevated plasma oxidative stress markers. The specific relationship between these factors in MDD remains unclear. In this study, we conducted resting-state fMRI scans on fifty-seven first-episode, drug-naive MDD patients and sixty healthy controls. Plasma levels of oxidative stress markers (superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase (GSR)) were assessed using ELISA. Our results revealed a positive correlation between plasma SOD and GSR levels in MDD patients and the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF)

Abnormal stability of spontaneous neuronal activity as a predictor of diagnosis conversion from major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder (BD) is often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD) in the early stage, which may lead to inappropriate treatment. This study aimed to characterize the alterations of spontaneous neuronal activity in patients with depressive episodes whose diagnosis transferred from MDD to BD. METHODS: 532 patients with MDD and 132 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited over 10 years. During the follow-up period, 75 participants with MDD transferred to BD (tBD), and 157 participants remained with the diagnosis of unipolar depression (UD). After excluding participants with

Decreased cortical gyrification in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Early neurodevelopmental deviations, such as abnormal cortical folding patterns, are candidate biomarkers of major depressive disorder (MDD). We aimed to investigate the association of MDD with the local gyrification index (LGI) in each cortical region at the whole-brain level, and the association of the LGI with clinical characteristics of MDD. METHODS: We obtained T1-weighted images from 234 patients with MDD and 215 healthy controls (HCs). The LGI values from 66 cortical regions in the bilateral hemispheres were automatically calculated according to the Desikan-Killiany atlas.

Association between increased anterior cingulate glutamate and psychotic-like experiences, but not autistic traits in healthy volunteers.

Despite many differences, autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia spectrum disorder share environmental risk factors, genetic predispositions as well as neuronal abnormalities, and show similar cognitive deficits in working memory, perspective taking, or response inhibition. These shared abnormalities are already present in subclinical traits of these disorders. The literature proposes that changes in the inhibitory GABAergic and the excitatory glutamatergic system could explain underlying neuronal commonalities and differences. Using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS), we investigate

Effects of bilateral sequential theta-burst stimulation on functional connectivity in treatment-resistant depression: First results.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that transcranial magnetic stimulation exerts antidepressant effects by altering functional connectivity (FC). However, knowledge about this mechanism is still limited. Here, we aimed to investigate the effect of bilateral sequential theta-burst stimulation (TBS) on FC in treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in a sham-controlled longitudinal study. METHODS: TRD patients (n = 20) underwent a three-week treatment of intermittent TBS of the left and continuous TBS of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Upon this trial's premature termination, 15

Smoking, tobacco dependence, and neurometabolites in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex.

Cigarette smoking has a major impact on global health and morbidity, and positron emission tomographic research has provided evidence for reduced inflammation in the human brain associated with cigarette smoking. Given the consequences of inflammatory dysfunction for health, the question of whether cigarette smoking affects neuroinflammation warrants further investigation. The goal of this project therefore was to validate and extend evidence of hypoinflammation related to smoking, and to examine the potential contribution of inflammation to clinical features of smoking. Using magnetic resonan

Dynamic changes in the central autonomic network of patients with anorexia nervosa.

Autonomic cardiac dysfunction is a common complication in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). Despite its high prevalence, physicians often overlook this clinical condition, and little research has been dedicated so far. To probe the functional role of the neurocircuitry underpinning the poorly understood autonomic cardiac dysfunction, we examined dynamic functional differences in the central autonomic network (CAN) between 21 acute AN individuals and 24 age, sex and heart rate-matched healthy controls (HC). We assessed functional connectivity (FC) changes in CAN using seeds in the ventromedi

Nocturnal sodium oxybate increases the anterior cingulate cortex magnetic resonance glutamate signal upon awakening.

Clinical guidelines recommend sodium oxybate (SXB; the sodium salt of γ-hydroxybutyrate) for the treatment of disturbed sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness in narcolepsy, yet the underlying mode of action is elusive. In a randomised controlled trial in 20 healthy volunteers, we aimed at establishing neurochemical changes in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) following SXB-enhanced sleep. The ACC is a core neural hub regulating vigilance in humans. At 2:30 a.m., we administered in a double-blind cross-over manner an oral dose of 50 mg/kg SXB or placebo, to enhance electroencephalography-def

EEG coherences of the fronto-limbic circuit between patients with major depressive disorder and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Imaging studies found that patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) showed abnormal functional connectivity in the fronto-limbic circuit, including the prefrontal cortex (PFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and limbic system (amygdala). This study used electroencephalography (EEG) coherence as an indicator of functional connectivity in the fronto-limbic circuit and examined the group differences between the MDD group and healthy controls (HC group), and the associations between EEG coherence and depressive symptoms. METHODS: 125 and 132 participants in the MDD and HC group

Patient-specific structural connectivity informs outcomes of responsive neurostimulation for temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Responsive neurostimulation is an effective therapy for patients with refractory mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. However, clinical outcomes are variable, few patients become seizure-free, and the optimal stimulation location is currently undefined. The aim of this study was to quantify responsive neurostimulation in the mesial temporal lobe, identify stimulation-dependent networks associated with seizure reduction, and determine if stimulation location or stimulation-dependent networks inform outcomes. METHODS: We modeled patient-specific volumes of tissue activated and created prob

Resting-State fMRI Functional Connectivity Strength Predicts Local Activity Change in the Dorsal Cingulate Cortex: A Multi-Target Focused rTMS Study.

Previous resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) studies suggested that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can modulate local activity in distant areas via functional connectivity (FC). A brain region has more than one connection with the superficial cortical areas. The current study proposed a multi-target focused rTMS protocol for indirectly stimulating a deep region, and to investigate 1) whether FC strength between stimulation targets (right middle frontal gyrus [rMFG] and right inferior parietal lobule [rIPL]) and effective region (dorsal anterior ci

Examining the neural correlates of error awareness in a large fMRI study.

Goal-directed behavior is dependent upon the ability to detect errors and implement appropriate posterror adjustments. Accordingly, several studies have explored the neural activity underlying error-monitoring processes, identifying the insula cortex as crucial for error awareness and reporting mixed findings with respect to the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Variable patterns of activation have previously been attributed to insufficient statistical power. We therefore sought to clarify the neural correlates of error awareness in a large event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (f

Task-induced subjective fatigue and resting-state striatal connectivity following traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: People with traumatic brain injury (TBI) often experience fatigue, but an understanding of the neural underpinnings of fatigue following TBI is still lacking. This study used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to examine associations between functional connectivity (FC) changes and task-induced changes in subjective fatigue in people with moderate-severe TBI. METHODS: Sixteen people with moderate-severe TBI and 17 matched healthy controls (HC) performed an adaptive N-back task (working memory task) to induce cognitive fatigue. Before and after the task t

Individual variation in brain network topology is linked to course of illness in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic and highly recurrent disorder. The functional connectivity in depression is affected by the cumulative effect of course of illness. However, previous neuroimaging studies on abnormal functional connection have not mainly focused on the disease duration, which is seen as a secondary factor. Here, we used a data-driven analysis (multivariate distance matrix regression) to examine the relationship between the course of illness and resting-state functional dysconnectivity in MDD. This method identified a region in the anterior cingulate cortex, which is

Neural mechanisms of prospection in individuals with schizotypal traits, autistic traits, or depressive symptoms.

Prospection refers to the ability to mentally construct future events, which is closely related to motivation and anhedonia. The neural underpinning of impaired prospection in psychiatric populations remains unclear. We recruited 34 individuals with autistic traits (AT), 27 individuals with schizotypal traits (ST), 31 individuals with depressive symptoms (DS), and 35 controls. Participants completed a prospection task while undergoing functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). We found that regions of the "default mode network" including the medial frontal gyrus, the posterior cingulate cort

Identification of neural and psychophysical predictors of headache reduction after cognitive behavioral therapy in adolescents with migraine.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a psychological intervention that involves development of coping strategies to reduce the experience of pain. Although CBT is a promising intervention to reduce headache days in patients with migraine, it may not be effective for all patients. Thus, there is a need to identify markers that could predict which patients will respond to CBT. We aimed to determine whether baseline brain function and amygdalar connectivity, assessed by functional magnetic resonance imaging, or pain modulation capacities, assessed by the conditioned pain modulation (CPM) respons
