BACKGROUND: The medial hamstring muscle has the potential to prevent excessive dynamic valgus and external rotation of the knee joint during sports. Thus, specific training targeting the medial hamstring muscle seems important to avoid knee injuries.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate the medial and lateral hamstring muscle activation balance during 14 selected therapeutic exercises.
STUDY DESIGN: The study design involved single-occasion repeated measures in a randomised manner. Sixteen female elite handball and soccer players with a mean (SD) age of 23 (3) years and no previous history

Proximal hamstring tendon avulsions represent the most severe hamstring injury in sports and are typically sustained during stretch-related movements in closed kinetic chain: forced hip hyperflexion combined with knee extension. Here, we present the case study of the right-foot dominant professional football player with a severe proximal hamstring tendon avulsion injury and concomitant lower-grade injuries of hamstring muscle-tendon complex caused by a potentially new football-specific injury mechanism: right-foot backheel pass during forward running (ie, a kick directly backward). This mechan

Passive muscle stiffness is considered to be a major factor affecting joint flexibility and is thought to relate to the occurrence of muscle strain injury. In skinned muscle fiber experiments, the R577X polymorphism of the α-actinin-3 gene (ACTN3) has been associated with passive muscle stiffness. Our primary purpose was to clarify whether the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism influences passive stiffness of human muscle in vivo. We also examined whether the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism is associated with the occurrence of hamstring strain injury. Seventy-six healthy young male subjects were genotyped for

Background/Objectives: Hip muscle lengthening is commonly associated with the normal function of the lumbar spine and lower extremities. Some evidence correlates hamstring and iliopsoas tightness with low back pain (LBP). Undergraduates are more prone to LBP as they are involved in prolonged sitting and poor posture. This study aims to assess the impact of hip muscle lengthening on LBP. Methods: This article involves a descriptive study of 70 students who were recruited from Zefat Academic College. Measurement of hamstrings and iliopsoas muscle lengthening, as well as a constructive questionna

Acute hamstring strain injuries are common in sports that involve sprinting, kicking, jumping or high-speed skilled movements. Despite increased knowledge of hamstring muscle injuries, the incidence has not diminished. It is generally believed that they happen during the terminal swing phase of the gait cycle. Most hamstring injuries occur along the proximal musculo-tendon junction, where the muscle fibrils intersect with the tendon, but may occur anywhere between the origin and the insertion. A number of potential risk factors have been proposed for hamstring strain, among them fatigue, lack

Hamstring strain injury (HSI) may result in considerable impairment, activity limitation, and participation restriction, including time lost from competitive sports. This CPG includes sports-related overloading and overstretching injuries to myofascial or musculotendinous structures in any combination of the 3 hamstring muscles (the semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris). OBJECTIVES: To describe in detail the anatomic distribution of acute hamstring injuries in football players, and to assess the relationship between location and extent of edema and tears, all based on findings from MRI.
DESIGN: Retrospective observational study.
METHODS: We included 275 consecutive male football players who had sustained acute hamstring injuries and had positive findings on MRI. For each subject, lesions were recorded at specific locations of the hamstring muscles, which were divided into proximal or distal: free tendon, myotendinous junction, muscle belly, and myofascial ju

INTRODUCTION: The Nordic Hamstring exercise (NHE) increases hamstring strength, but muscle soreness and excessive fatigue may hinder adoption. The assisted NHE (A-NHE), with an elastic band around the chest lowering the force in the eccentric lowering phase, may be a less demanding alternative. We investigated the effectiveness of A-NHE versus NHE on hamstring strength, muscle soreness, and perceived exertion.
METHODS: We randomized 31 youth elite football players (under-14 and -15) from a single professional football academy to either NHE or A-NHE, who performed the same supervised 8-week pr

In high-velocity sports, hamstring strain injuries are common causes of missed play and have high rates of reinjury. Evaluating the severity and location of a hamstring strain injury, currently graded by a clinician using a semiqualitative muscle injury classification score (e.g. as one method, British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification - BAMIC) to describe edema presence and location, aids in guiding athlete recovery. In this study, automated artificial intelligence (AI) models were developed and deployed to automatically segment edema, hamstring muscle and tendon structures using T2-weig

The hamstring muscles, located in the posterior thigh, include the biceps femoris, the semimembranosus, and the semitendinosus. The proximal portions of the hamstring muscles are subject to a variety of injuries and pathology. Many of these entities affect the origin of the hamstrings, including the tendinous enthesis, the underlying ischial tuberosity, and the surrounding tissues. Tendinosis and small partial tears at the origin are the result of chronic attrition. They may be accompanied by bursitis or hamstring syndrome. Apophysitis occurs in teenagers prior to complete fusion of the ischia

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strains may alter the contractile properties of the muscle and affect functional movement. Thus, this study evaluated the association between the hamstring properties and the jump-landing performance in athletes with hamstring strains.
METHODS: Sixteen hamstring-injured athletes and 16 healthy controls were recruited. The mechanical properties and contractile function of the hamstring were assessed in both the injured and non-injured legs. The control group was tested only in the matched injured leg. The kinetic outcomes during squat jump (SJ) and countermovement jump (C

INTRODUCTION: Healthy hamstring muscles are necessary for active living. Hamstring tightness is a widely reported problem among individuals from all levels of society. The effects of combining radiofrequency (RF) therapy with static stretching (SS) on hamstring tightness have not been investigated. Therefore, we aimed to verify the superiority of combining RF and SS over SS alone by comparing their immediate effects on hamstring flexibility.
METHODS: This randomized controlled study included 33 participants with hamstring tightness. The participants were allocated to the RF (intervention; n =

BACKGROUND: People with knee osteoarthritis stand and walk with increased trunk flexion. This altered postural alignment increases hamstring activation, elevating mechanical knee loads during walking. Increased hip flexor stiffness may lead to increased trunk flexion. Therefore, this study compared hip flexor stiffness between healthy individuals and individuals with knee osteoarthritis. This study also sought to understand the biomechanical effect of a simple instruction to reduce trunk flexion by 5° during walking.
METHODS: Twenty individuals with confirmed knee osteoarthritis and 20 health

Exercise responses and injury rates differ between individual hamstrings and this may be linked with their morphology. The aim of this study was to compare muscle length and tendon dimensions between the individual hamstrings at two knee joint angles using free hand three-dimensional ultrasound (3D US). Muscle-tendon length and distal tendon cross-sectional area (CSA), volume, length and echogenicity of biceps femoris long (BFlh) and short (BFsh) head, semimembranosus (SM) and semitendinosus (ST) of 16 individuals were measured using free-hand 3D US at 0° (full extension) and 45° of knee flexi

The hamstring muscles were analyzed anatomically and physiologically to clarify the specific reasons for the incidence of muscle strain of the hamstrings. For the anatomical study, hamstring muscles of 13 embalmed cadavers were dissected. For the physiological study, the knee flexor torque and surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were measured during isometric contraction of hamstring muscles in 10 healthy adults. The biceps femoris muscle long head (BF-L) and semimembranosus muscle (SM) had hemi-pennate architecture and their fiber length per total muscle length (FL/TML) was smaller than t

The hamstring muscles comprise the semimembranosus, semitendinosus, and biceps femoris. The hamstring muscle group is frequently injured in a wide range of sports, particularly those involving sprinting, rapid acceleration and deceleration, and changes of direction. The most common mechanism is an indirect injury, typically presenting as a muscle strain. In elite athletes, hamstring injuries can be career-threatening. Complete hamstring avulsions are less common than partial tears. This review provides an overview of the broad spectrum of sports-related hamstring injuries and their magnetic re

We investigated the effect of quadriceps and hamstring muscle fatigue on anterior tibial translation and muscle reaction time in 10 healthy subjects. The six men and four women had an average age of 21.3 years and had no known pathologic knee conditions. Each patient underwent a knee examination, arthrometer measurements of tibial translation, subjective functional assessment, and an anterior tibial translation stress test before and after quadriceps and hamstring muscle-fatiguing exercise. The recruitment order of the lower extremity muscles in response to anterior tibial translation did not
