Maximum hand-rung coupling forces in children: the effects of handhold diameter.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effect of handhold size (diameter) on the maximum breakaway strength between a hand and handhold for children. BACKGROUND: Falls from playground equipment are a major cause of childhood injury and death. It is unclear if recommendations for handholds on playground equipment are too broad. METHODS: Breakaway strength was defined as the maximum quasistatic force that can be exerted on a grasped object before the object is forcibly pulled from the grasp. Hand anthropometry, grip, and breakaway strengths were measured for 397 children between the ages of 6 and 11 years

Age-related and gender-related differences on hand dexterity in healthy and sports inactive older adults: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although the population of older adults in our society is significantly older and more resilient than before, they also show age-related limitations in performance in all areas of motor function. Hand dexterity and eye-hand coordination are important factors for leading an independent life. AIM: This study investigates gender-related and age-related differences in hand dexterity and examines whether hand dexterity declines with age similar to upper extremity strength. METHODS: Among 198 older adults (male = 61, aged 60-81 years), hand dexterity was assessed using 4 subtests of th

Evaluation and functional assessment of flexor tendon repair in the hand.

Seventeen patients with 28 flexor tendon injuries were examined after tendon repair. The current most frequently used evaluation systems, including grip and pinch strength, were compared with functional outcome as assessed by a questionnaire, evaluating Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH). Good correlation was found between Total Active Motion (TAM) and the Original Strickland test (kappa = 0.85), however with reduced categories. Only limited correlation was found between the DASH-score and TAM (r = -0.33) as well as between the DASH-score and pinch strength (r = -0.35). We suggest r

A quantitative comparison between the mHand Adapt passive adjustable hand prosthesis and its predecessor, the Delft Self-Grasping Hand.

INTRODUCTION: The Delft Self-Grasping Hand (SGH) is an adjustable passive hand prosthesis that relies on wrist flexion to adjust the aperture of its grasp. The mechanism requires engagement of the contralateral hand meaning that hand is not available for other tasks. A commercialised version of this prosthesis, known as the mHand Adapt, includes a new release mechanism, which avoids the need to press a release button, and changes to the hand shape. This study is the first of its kind to compare two passive adjustable hand prostheses on the basis of quantitative scoring and contralateral hand i

Relationship Between Hand Function and Handheld Ultrasound Imaging in Inclusion Body Myositis.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound studies in inclusion body myositis (IBM) have reported a characteristic pattern of increased echointensity in the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) with relative sparing of the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU). We examined the relationship between echointensity of the FDP and FCU muscles and hand strength or patient-reported outcomes (PROs). METHODS: A total of 15 patients with IBM were recruited. Ultrasound images of the FDP and FCU muscles were obtained by a point-of-care ultrasound and graded using the modified Heckmatt score. Hand grip and neutral pinch strength were measur

Measuring System for Synchronous Recording of Kinematic and Force Data during Handover Action of Human Dyads.

Handover actions are joint actions between two people in which an object is handed over from a giver to a receiver. This necessitates precise coordination and synchronization of both the reach and grasp kinematics and the scaling of grip forces of the actors during the interaction. For this purpose, a measurement object is presented that records the grip forces of both actors on the instrument and allows synchronous measurement of the kinematic data of both actors and the position and orientation of the instrument in space using an optical motion capture system. Additionally, the object allows

Influence of grasping postures on skin deformation of hand.

To investigate the influence of different grasping postures on the hand's skin deformation, a handheld 3D EVA SCANNER was used to obtain 3D models of 111 women in five postures, including a straight posture and grasping cylinders with various diameters (4/6/8/10 cm). Skin relaxation strain ratio ([Formula: see text]) and surface area skin relaxation strain ratio ([Formula: see text]) were used as measures of skin deformation between two landmarks and multiple landmarks, respectively. The effects of grasping posture on skin deformation in different directions were analyzed. The results revealed

Grasp and Release Test for Tetraplegic Hand Assessment: an update of the Grasp and Release Test.

The Grasp and Release Test (GRT) was originally developed to measure effectiveness of an implanted neuroprosthesis in people with tetraplegia. Its ease of use and lack of floor and ceiling effects culminated in recommendations for inclusion in a battery of tests to measure outcome following upper limb reconstructive surgery. However, the length of time taken to administer the GRT in a clinical setting, lack of instructions of accepted grasp patterns in the upper limb reconstructive surgery population and scoring procedures lead to differences in reporting outcomes using this measure. In order

ExoMechHand prototype development and testing with EMG signals for hand rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation is a major requirement to improve the quality of life and mobility of patients with disabilities. The use of rehabilitative devices without continuous supervision of medical experts is increasing manifold, mainly due to prolonged therapy costs and advancements in robotics. Due to ExoMechHand's inexpensive cost, high robustness, and efficacy for participants with median and ulnar neuropathies, we have recommended it as a rehabilitation tool in this study. ExoMechHand is coupled with three different resistive plates for hand impairment. For efficacy, ten unhealthy subjects with me

Satisfaction with hand appearance in children with index pollicization for thumb hypoplasia.

Although the primary aim of pollicization is to augment function, aesthetic improvement is an important secondary aim. Satisfaction with hand appearance in children with index pollicization for thumb hypoplasia was evaluated in 18 patients at an average of 7.5 years after surgery. Patients and their parents rated the appearance of their operated hand using a 10-point visual analogue scale (VAS). Four independent surgeons and 16 non-surgeon observers also rated the hands after reviewing standardized photographs of each child. The median patient-reported and parent-reported scores were 9 for bot

A Compact and Lightweight Rehabilitative Exoskeleton to Restore Grasping Functions for People with Hand Paralysis.

Millions of individuals suffer from upper extremity paralysis caused by neurological disorders including stroke, traumatic brain injury, or spinal cord injury. Robotic hand exoskeletons can substitute the missing motor control and help restore the functions in daily operations. However, most of the hand exoskeletons are bulky, stationary, and cumbersome to use. We have modified a recent existing design (Tenoexo) to prototype a motorized, lightweight, fully wearable rehabilitative hand exoskeleton by combining rigid parts with a soft mechanism capable of producing various grasps needed for the

The impact of aging and reaching movements on grip stability control during manual precision tasks.

BACKGROUND: Operating an object by generating stable hand-grip force during static or dynamic posture control of the upper extremities simultaneously is an important daily activity. Older adults require different attentional resources during grip strength control and arm movements. However, the impact of aging and reaching movements on precise grip strength and stability control among older adults is not well understood. This study investigated the impact of aging and reaching movements on grip strength and stability control in both hands of the upper extremities. METHODS: Fifty healthy young

Exploring New Potential Applications for Hand Exoskeletons: Power Grip to Assist Human Standing.

Hand exoskeleton potential applications reach further than grasping or assistance during manipulation. In this paper, we present a preliminary study of how this technology can be applied in order to improve performance during standing to help the user to keep balance under perturbations. Non-impaired users wearing a hand exoskeleton gripping a hand rail were pushed by a cable-driven robot, so that their standing equilibrium was perturbed. The center of pressure, surface electromyography, and interaction force data were recorded in order to assess the performance of users and their postural str
