Body mass index moderates the effects of midsole hardness on metatarsophalangeal joint biomechanics during running in male recreational runners.

Whether body mass index (BMI) modifies biomechanical responses to midsole hardness remains unclear. This study tested whether BMI moderates the effects of midsole hardness on lower-limb biomechanics in male recreational runners, with particular focus on metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint responses at the foot-shoe interface. Thirty male recreational runners were stratified into low-, medium-, and high-BMI groups and ran at 2.7 m/s in shoes with three midsole hardness levels (40C, 53C, and 65C). Joint kinematics, kinetics, stiffness, and ground reaction force variables were analyzed. BMI significa

Increased exposure to loading is associated with decreased plantar soft tissue hardness in people with diabetes and neuropathy.

AIMS: Literature indicates that altered plantar loading in people with diabetes could trigger changes in plantar soft tissue biomechanics which, in turn, could affect the risk for ulceration. To stimulate more research in this area, this study uses in vivo testing to investigate the link between plantar loading and tissue hardness. METHODS: Tissue hardness and plantar pressure distribution were measured for six plantar areas in 39 people with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. RESULTS: Spearman correlation analysis revealed that increased pressure time integral at the 1st metatarsal-head re

Changes in biceps brachii muscle hardness assessed by a push-in meter and strain elastography after eccentric versus concentric contractions.

Changes in biceps brachii muscle hardness assessed by a push-in meter (PM) and strain elastography (SE) were compared between eccentric (ECC) and concentric contractions (CON) of the elbow flexors to test the hypothesis that muscle hardness would increase greater after ECC. Ten men performed 5 sets of 10 ECC with their non-dominant arms and 5 sets of 10 CON with their dominant arms using a dumbbell corresponding to 50% of maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) force at 90º elbow flexion. Before and 1-4 days after the exercise, MVIC force, elbow joint angles, upper-arm circumference, an

Springing test for differentiating a cervical rib tip from a supraclavicular lymph node.

The palpable tip of a cervical rib can be easily mistaken for an enlarged, hard supraclavicular lymph node. These two swellings, however, can be differentiated by the springing test, in which the clinician applies intermittent pressure on a point corresponding to the surface marking of a cervical rib shaft and checks for transmission of the springing movement to the swelling. The tip of a cervical rib will move but a supraclavicular lymph node will not. This test should be routinely done in all patients having a solitary, hard supraclavicular swelling as it will save many patients from an unne

Propolis-infused heat-polymerized acrylic denture bases: Enhanced mechanical properties in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is widely used as a denture base material despite its limitations, which include low transverse strength, impact resistance, surface hardness, and relatively high-water solubility and sorption. To enhance its mechanical and physical properties, PMMA has been modified by incorporating various metal powder fillers, such as aluminum and copper - despite their tendency to cause discoloration. These modifications aim to improve the overall quality and durability of dental prostheses. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of incorporating microform propoli

Effects of alternatively used thermal treatments on the mechanical and fracture behavior of dental resin composites with varying filler content.

The purpose of this study was two-fold: (i) to investigate whether the thermal treatment of direct dental resin composites (RCs) using microwave or autoclave heating cycles would modify the materials' strength as compared to the protocol without heating (control); and (ii) to compare the mechanical performance of direct and indirect RCs. Three RCs (from 3M ESPE) were tested: one indirect (Sinfony); and two direct materials (microhybrid - Filtek Z250; and nanofilled - Filtek Z350). Specimens from the direct RCs were prepared and randomly allocated into three groups according to the thermal trea

An interproximal model to determine the erosion-protective effect of calcium silicate, sodium phosphate, fluoride formulations.

OBJECTIVES: Previous work has shown the effectiveness of a newly developed interproximal model to differentiate between the amount of remineralization caused by toothpastes used with or without a dual-phase gel treatment system containing calcium silicate, sodium phosphate salts and fluoride to repair acid-softened enamel. The aim of this study was to utilize the same interproximal model to identify how effective calcium silicate phosphate toothpastes are at reducing surface softening in the early stages of erosion. The model was also used to identify the effect of increasing the frequency of

Indentation as a technique to assess the mechanical properties of fallback foods.

A number of living primates feed part-year on seemingly hard food objects as a fallback. We ask here how hardness can be quantified and how this can help understand primate feeding ecology. We report a simple indentation methodology for quantifying hardness, elastic modulus, and toughness in the sense that materials scientists would define them. Suggested categories of fallback foods-nuts, seeds, and root vegetables-were tested, with accuracy checked on standard materials with known properties by the same means. Results were generally consistent, but the moduli of root vegetables were overesti
