Chronic and predispositional guilt: relations to mental health, prosocial behavior, and religiosity.

Researchers are in sharp disagreement concerning the role of guilt in mental health and prosocial behavior, and on whether guilt is associated with greater religiosity. We sought to resolve diametrically opposed reports by distinguishing chronic guilt, an ongoing condition unattached to immediate events, from predispositional guilt, a personality proclivity for experiencing guilt in reaction to circumscribed precipitating events. We administered a battery of commonly used guilt and shame measures to 101 undergraduates (48 men, 53 women) as well as measures of chronic and predispositional guilt

Health Literacy, Socioeconomic Status, and Health Behavior Adherence Among Young Adult Survivors With Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study.

IntroductionYoung adults (YAs) with cancer are at elevated risk for chronic conditions and late effects, making adherence to healthy eating and physical activity guidelines a key survivorship priority. Health literacy is theorized to support guideline-concordant behaviors, yet its role in YA oncology remains unclear, particularly in the context of socioeconomic and environmental influences. This study aimed to characterize health literacy among YA cancer survivors and examine its association with adherence to healthy eating and physical activity guidelines, after accounting for sociodemographi

A Comprehensive Examination of Poverty, Health-Seeking Behavior, and Access to Health Services With a Mixed-Methods Approach.

OBJECTIVE: The complex relationship between poverty, health-seeking behavior, and access to health services is critical to understanding health inequalities. This study aimed to deepen our understanding of this field by examining the relationships between poverty, health-seeking behavior, and access to health services with a mixed-methods approach. METHODS: Between December 2023 and March 2024, a mixed-methods design (QUAN-QUAL) was employed using a convergent (sequential) approach. The quantitative phase adopted a cross-sectional research approach, while the qualitative part embraced a pheno

Oral health behavior and factors associated with poor oral status in Qatar: results from a national health survey.

OBJECTIVES: Oral health is a crucial determinant of quality of life. We aimed to determine oral health condition and factors associated with poor oral status in the adult national population of Qatar. METHODS: We used data from the World Health Organization supported STEPS (STEPwise approach to Surveillance) Survey conducted by the Supreme Council of Health, Qatar in 2012. A total of 2,496 Qataris (1,053 men, 1,443 women) answered the national survey. The Rao-Scott Chi-Square test was used to analyze oral health characteristics and multinomial logistic regression to assess risk factors. RESU

Implementation of Health Behavior Education Concerning Liver Flukes among Village Health Volunteers in an Epidemic Area of Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Liver fluke infection is associated with cholangiocarcinoma; the bile duct cancer found frequently in the northeast and north of Thailand. Prevention and control particularly requires health education and behavior change. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to improve health behavior among village health volunteers (VHV) regarding liver fluke exposure in an epidemic area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was performed during July 2015 to January 2016 in Sang Kha district of Surin province, Thailand. Infection is associated with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), endemic among human populations in northeast and north Thailand where raw fish containing fluke metacercariae are frequently consumed. Recently, Thailand public health authorities have been organized to reduce morbidity and mortality particularly in the northeast through O. viverrini and CCA screening projects. Health modfication is one of activities included in this campaign, but systemic guidelines of modifying and developing health behavior for liver flukes

Adverse childhood experiences and association with health, mental health, and risky behavior in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to determine if ACEs impact the health and risk behavior burden among Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) adults. METHODS: In 2013, a cross-sectional study was conducted across KSA to identify the retrospective prevalence of ACEs and their association with high risk behaviors and chronic diseases. Surveys from 10,156 adults in all 13 Saudi regions were obtained using an Arabic version of the WHO ACE-IQ (KSA ACE-IQ). RESULTS: Compared to respondents reporting no ACEs, even just one ACE contributed significantly to the odds of experiencing diabetes mellitus (OR=1

A Cross-Sectional Study on Mental Health Burden Among Austrian Farmers: Sociodemographic, Work-Related, and Health Behavior Factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although previous studies point to a high mental health burden in farmers, little is known about mental health in Austrian farmers, especially about factors associated with poor mental health. METHODS: We assessed mental health in Austrian farmers and explored potential risk factors for poor mental health. A total of N = 2006 farmers (38.5% women; 61.4% men; a distribution closely mirroring the Austrian farming population) with a mean age of 45.04 ± 10.31 years took part in an online survey from October 2024 to February 2025 in which validated screening tools for symptoms

Age-Related Patterns in Health Literacy and Health Information-Seeking Behavior in a Korean Population: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Health information-seeking behavior (HISB) is a critical component of personal health management. Health literacy (HL) shapes whether and how people seek health information, but its role across age groups remains underexplored. Korea's highly digitalized information environment and rapidly aging population provide an important context for examining age-group differences in HL and HISB. OBJECTIVE: This study examined age-group differences in the association of HL with 2 related stages of HISB-HISB experience and, conditional on engagement, source-based HISB type-and assessed whethe

The Role of Mental Health, Recent Trauma, and Suicidal Behavior in Officer-Involved Shootings: A Public Health Perspective.

UNLABELLED: This study uses a public health approach to identify the comorbid risk factors and protective factors that influence the likelihood of an officer-involved shooting (OIS). METHODS: We analyzed 7.5 years of hospital inpatient data obtained from the state of Texas. The OIS subjects (n = 177) were civilians who were shot during a legal intervention involving law enforcement. The control group (n = 33,539) included persons who were hospitalized due to injuries from a car accident. Logistic regression models were used to identify the predictors of an OIS incident.
