Human histologic evaluation of a six-year-old threaded implant retrieved from a subject with osteoporosis.

AIM: The aim of this case report was to present the evaluation of the bone-to-implant contact in an implant retrieved from a subject with osteoporosis after six years of load. BACKGROUND: Systemic conditions associated with osteoporosis have been postulated to contribute to the severity of alveolar bone loss. The increase in human life expectancy, the increased number of elderly subjects who are partially or totally edentulous, and the use of dental implants for oral habilitation in subjects with osteoporosis has raised several questions. REPORT: A 68-year-old woman with postmenopausal osteo

Haptoglobin Phenotype Among Arab Patients With Mental Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Depression, schizophrenia and panic disorder are common mental disorders in the community and hospitalized patients. These mental disorders negatively affect life quality and even expectancy of life. Haptoglobin (Hp) phenotype (Hp 1-1, 1-2, or 2-2) is associated with risk for cardiovascular diseases, but its association with psychiatric disorders, a growing concern in the modern society, has not been studied thoroughly. The aim of the study was to examine whether Hp phenotype is associated with common mental disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, and panic disorder. METHODS:

Myokines as mediators of exercise-induced cognitive changes in older adults: protocol for a comprehensive living systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The world's population is aging, but life expectancy has risen more than healthy life expectancy (HALE). With respect to brain and cognition, the prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders increases with age, affecting health and quality of life, and imposing significant healthcare costs. Although the effects of physical exercise on cognition in advanced age have been widely explored, in-depth fundamental knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of the exercise-induced cognitive improvements is lacking. Recent research suggests that myokines, factors released into the blood circulatio

Cardiotoxicity of Targeted Cancer Drugs: Concerns, "The Cart Before the Horse," and Lessons from Trastuzumab.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Modern oncology is witnessing a renaissance of its pharmacologic armamentarium. Old generation drugs, such as anthracyclines and other cytotoxic or cytostatic drugs, were plagued with a lack of specificity and with the possible occurrence of untoward effects in the cardiovascular system and other healthy tissues. The old drugs are now combined with, or replaced by, new agents that are more specific in attacking some unique moieties and vital functions of cancer cells, causing less noxious effects in healthy tissues. Regrettably, however, the new "targeted" drugs still cause

Chemotherapy-Induced Brain Effects in Small-Cell Lung Cancer Patients: A Multimodal MRI Study.

The golden standard of treating Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) entails application of platinum-based chemotherapy, is often accompanied by Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation (PCI), which have been linked to neurotoxic side-effects in cognitive functions. The related existing neuroimaging research mainly focuses on the effect of PCI treatment in life quality and expectancy, while little is known regarding the distinct adverse effects of chemotherapy. In this context, a multimodal MRI analysis based on structural and functional brain data is proposed in order to evaluate chemotherapy-specific effec

Socioeconomic, Behavioural, and Social Health Correlates of Optimism and Pessimism in Older Men and Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Optimism is a disposition characterised by positive future expectancies, while pessimism is characterised by expecting the worst. High optimism and low pessimism promote the health of older adults and may potentiate full engagement in life. We identified socioeconomic, behavioural, and social factors associated with optimism and pessimism in older adults. METHODS: Participants included 10,146 community-dwelling, apparently healthy Australian adults aged 70 years and over from the ASPREE Longitudinal Study of Older Persons (ALSOP). Optimism and pessimism were measured using the rev

Cytomorphometric Evaluation of Oral Mucosa of Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare genetic disorder in which patients progressive muscle deterioration and low life expectancy. Since DMD has no cure, treatment slows the deterioration process using corticosteroids and other medications, including oral bisphosphonates (BP). These drugs can lead to toxicities in both soft and hard tissues. The objective of this study was to present cytological changes in DMD patients, comparing to young, healthy individuals. Cytological smears were obtained from buccal mucosa from nine DMD patients and five healthy patients. The Papanicolaou technique

Incidence of Depression Among Community Dwelling Healthy Elderly and the Predisposing Socio-environmental Factors.

Introduction The average life expectancy is increasing with better medical facilities and evolving technology. The ratio of the geriatric population is increasing, which drives a need to invest more in the physical and psychological health of older people. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of depression in community-dwelling healthy older adults.  Methods Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15) was utilized in this study. Community-dwelling older adults (age 65+ years) were approached in parks, mosques, grocery stores, and waiting areas of banks. Demographic information includin

Expression of CD55, CD59, and CD35 on red blood cells of β-thalassaemia patients.

AIM OF THE STUDY: β-thalassaemia (β-Thal) is considered a severe, progressive haemolytic anaemia, which needs regular blood transfusions for life expectancy. Complement-mediated erythrocyte destruction can cause both intravascular and extravascular haemolysis. Complement regulatory proteins protect cells from such effects of the complement system. We aimed to perform quantitative analysis of membrane-bound complement regulators, CD55 (decay accelerating factor - DAF), CD35 (complement receptor type 1 - CR1), and CD59 (membrane attack complex inhibitory factor - MACIF) on peripheral red blood c

A review on advanced atrioventricular block in young or middle-aged adults.

Complete atrioventricular block is a relatively uncommon arrhythmia that is nonetheless increasingly seen in elderly people of developed countries, due to the increase in life expectancy. Congenital and degenerative etiologies are the most commonly seen among young and old patients, respectively. However, scientific literature is surprisingly scarce regarding the etiology of complete atrioventricular block in the asymptomatic otherwise healthy young and middle-aged adult population. Coronary artery disease, autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis, hist

[The evaluation of the quality of life in a healthy population with the use of the COMQ-12 questionnaire].

The COMQ-12 questionnaire has been elaborated to evaluate the deterioration in the quality of life of the subjects suffering from chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) based on the reports of the patients themselves. This questionnaire is of special interest in that it allows to register the complaints of the patients stated by them in the order of priority beginning from those that are responsible for the most pronounced manifestations of the impairment in the quality of life. It, in turn, helps the medical practitioner to rationally organize the treatment of a concrete patient taking into

Expectant management of heterotopic cesarean scar pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic cesarean scar pregnancy (HCSP) is a very rare but life-threatening entity and there is no optimal management strategy. Here we report a successfully managed case of HCSP with expectant treatment in a tertiary referral hospital. METHODS: A woman with HCSP after in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer opted for expectant treatment after five days of mild bleeding and ultrasound demonstrated cardiac activity disappearance of the scar pregnancy at 8(+4) weeks of gestation. RESULTS: The patient had mild to moderate bleeding during close monitoring. Three days later, speculu

Do We Need Palliative Care in Pediatric Nephrology? Patients' and Caregivers' Disease Experience.

Chronic life-limiting illnesses such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) require integral support to the families concerned in addition to medical care. Palliative care is an option to facilitate families to address future concerns, such as procedures for acute life-threatening complications, or to relieve physical and psychosocial suffering. The exact needs of patients or parents have not yet been investigated. To assess needs in supportive palliative care, we conducted a monocentric qualitative interview study. We included patients 14 to 24 years old as well as parents of younger children (below

[The quality of life of Brazilian and North-American adolescents with spina bifida].

The purpose of the present research is to explore and describe the quality of life of adolescents in two different cultural environments, the Brazilian and the North American. The point of reference of the investigation is the dimension encompassing the concept of quality of life. This qualitative research utilized semi-structured interviews and focal groups in two health-care units specialized in the care of youths with spina bifida, one in Brazil and another in the USA. The discourses reflected the need for more comprehensive categories of quality of life, not pulverizing the life experience

Spontaneous osteoclastogenesis is a predictive factor for bone metastases from non-small cell lung cancer.

Lung cancer is a widespread disease and its incidence is growing. Since therapies have increased the life expectancy of lung cancer patients, the development of bone osteolytic metastases is becoming a common cause of morbidity. Osteolysis is caused by an increased osteoclast activity and may be reduced by inhibiting their formation and activity. We studied 60 male patients affected by NSCLC, divided in early and advanced stage disease. Patients' blood and urinary samples were collected at tumor diagnosis and at follow-up. PBMCs were cultured to investigate the spontaneous osteoclastogenesis.

Menstrual Health in Adolescents with Congenital Heart Disease.

OBJECTIVE: As life expectancy increases in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), providing appropriate gynecological care has become more important. While the gynecologic and reproductive health concerns of adults with CHD are increasingly recognized, studies focusing on menstrual problems in adolescents with CHD are limited. The aim was to evaluate menstrual characteristics and related symptoms in adolescents with CHD. METHODS: Adolescents aged 12-21 years who had experienced menarche at least two years earlier were included. The CHD group was classified as mild, moderate, or severe,

Global transitions of concomitant patterns and risk factors of cardio-renal-metabolic conditions among the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Cardio-renal-metabolic (CRM) diseases-including ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and chronic kidney disease (CKD)-pose major threats to healthy aging. Yet the co-occurrence and evolution of these conditions across regions, and their modifiable risk factors, remain unclear. METHODS: We analyzed CRM incidence among adults aged ≥55 years in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. Fifteen multimorbidity patterns were identified based on the population-level coexistence of high CRM incidence. Temporal dynamics were assessed using Bayesian age-perio

Volatile Markers for Cancer in Exhaled Breath-Could They Be the Signature of the Gut Microbiota?

It has been shown that the gut microbiota plays a central role in human health and disease. A wide range of volatile metabolites present in exhaled breath have been linked with gut microbiota and proposed as a non-invasive marker for monitoring pathological conditions. The aim of this study was to examine the possible correlation between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath and the fecal microbiome by multivariate statistical analysis in gastric cancer patients (n = 16) and healthy controls (n = 33). Shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to characterize the fecal microbiota. B

Apolipoprotein serum levels related to metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is associated with a lowered life expectancy due to cardiovascular disease. This is, at least in part, related to an increased vulnerability to the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with schizophrenia. The dysregulation of apolipoproteins (Apos) may also play a role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia via their effect on cerebral cholesterol processing. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate serum Apos A1, C3, E, A2 and C2 concentration in schizophrenia patients with or without MetS in comparison to healthy donors. METHODS: After obtaining

Age diversity among older surgically treated patients with lumbar spinal stenosis: a retrospective comparative study of early and late older adults.

BACKGROUND: At present, the threshold defining older adults is 65 years, and this classification has been widely accepted globally. However, with the extension of both life expectancy and healthy life expectancy, there is a need to reconsider this age-based definition. This study compared the characteristics and surgical outcomes of older patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) between the early and late stages to clarify age diversity in this population. METHODS: Data collected from consecutive patients aged ≥ 65 years who underwent LSS surgery were retrospectively reviewed. All participa
