Asthmatic Wheeze Detection From Compressively Sensed Respiratory Sound Spectra.

Quantification of wheezing by a sensor system consisting of a wearable wireless acoustic sensor and smartphone performing respiratory sound classification may contribute to the diagnosis, long-term control, and lowering treatment costs of asthma. In such battery-powered sensor system, compressive sensing (CS) was verified as a method for simultaneously cutting down power cost of signal acquisition, compression, and communication on the wearable sensor. Matching real-time CS reconstruction algorithms, such as orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP), have been demonstrated on the smartphone. However,

Profiling of copy number variations (CNVs) in healthy individuals from three ethnic groups using a human genome 32 K BAC-clone-based array.

To further explore the extent of structural large-scale variation in the human genome, we assessed copy number variations (CNVs) in a series of 71 healthy subjects from three ethnic groups. CNVs were analyzed using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) to a BAC array covering the human genome, using DNA extracted from peripheral blood, thus avoiding any culture-induced rearrangements. By applying a newly developed computational algorithm based on Hidden Markov modeling, we identified 1,078 autosomal CNVs, including at least two neighboring/overlapping BACs, which represent 315 distinct regio

Determinants of stunting among under-five children in Amhara and Oromia regions, Ethiopia: the linear quantile regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stunting in Ethiopia slightly decreased from 38% in 2016 to 34.4% in 2022. However, with this rate the country still falls behind the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. The underlying unobserved factors-whether constant overtime or/and evolving due to random shocks have not yet been identified. Therefore, the current study aimed to identify the determinants of stunting among under-five children by accounting for both time-invariant and time-varying random effects. METHODS: Data for this study was obtained from the International Food Policy Research Institute. I

Behavioural Classification of Cattle Using Neck-Mounted Accelerometer-Equipped Collars.

Monitoring and classification of dairy cattle behaviours is essential for optimising milk yields. Early detection of illness, days before the critical conditions occur, together with automatic detection of the onset of oestrus cycles is crucial for obviating prolonged cattle treatments and improving the pregnancy rates. Accelerometer-based sensor systems are becoming increasingly popular, as they are automatically providing information about key cattle behaviours such as the level of restlessness and the time spent ruminating and eating, proxy measurements that indicate the onset of heat event

A distracted driver behavior typology: The role of regulatory environments.

Distracted driving is a recognized pedestrian safety risk, yet behavioral heterogeneity within distraction periods remains poorly characterized. We analyze 39,271 one-second observations from 720 naturalistic crosswalk traversals (162 drivers, SHRP2 NDS, 2008-2013) using a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) pipeline. Five kinematic states form a near-sequential deceleration cascade, with nondriving-related task (NDRT) engagement concentrated in low-demand states. Monte Carlo cross-validation identified two driver profiles distinguished not by distraction frequency, whic

Tannin supplementation modulates the grazing behavior and metabolomic profiles of beef cattle.

Because plant tannins can modulate rumen function and herbivore behavior, we tested whether supplemental tannins impact the foraging strategies and metabolic signatures of beef cattle grazing smooth bromegrass pastures. Twenty-four Angus cow-calf pairs were allocated to six 3.6-ha paddocks (four pairs/paddock), randomly assigned to Control (Ctrl; n = 3) or Tannin treatment (TT; n = 3). Animals received 1 kg/cow/day of dried distillers' grains with solubles (DDGS), with TT receiving an additional 0.4% tannins (2:1 condensed: hydrolizable). Grazing occurred during four 15-day periods (July-Septe

Weight trajectories in aging humanized APOE mice with translational validity to human Alzheimer's risk population: A retrospective analysis.

Translational validity of mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is variable. Because change in weight is a well-documented precursor of AD, we investigated whether diversity of human AD risk weight phenotypes was evident in a longitudinally characterized cohort of 1,196 female and male humanized APOE (hAPOE) mice, monitored up to 28 months of age which is equivalent to 81 human years. Autoregressive Hidden Markov Model (AHMM) incorporating age, sex, and APOE genotype was employed to identify emergent weight trajectories and phenotypes. In the hAPOE-AD mouse cohort, five distinct weight traj

Killer whale respiration rates.

Measuring breathing rates is a means by which oxygen intake and metabolic rates can be estimated to determine food requirements and energy expenditure of killer whales (Orcinus orca) and other cetaceans. This relatively simple measure also allows the energetic consequences of environmental stressors to cetaceans to be understood but requires knowing respiration rates while they are engaged in different behaviours such as resting, travelling and foraging. We calculated respiration rates for different behavioural states of southern and northern resident killer whales using video from UAV drones

Alertness-related differences in CF strategy among truck drivers based on naturalistic driving data.

Driver drowsiness is a major safety concern in heavy-duty truck operation, particularly in freeway car-following (CF) scenarios that require prolonged vigilance and continuous longitudinal control. However, how drowsiness-induced reduced alertness influences truck drivers' CF behavior in real-world settings remains insufficiently understood. To address this gap, this study established a naturalistic heavy-truck CF dataset from long-haul freeway operations, with driver alertness labels obtained from a Smart Eye system. A three-level analytical framework was adopted to examine the effects of ale

Technical Validation of an Automated Mobile Gait Analysis System for Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Patients.

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) represents a group of orphan neurodegenerative diseases with gait disturbance as the predominant clinical feature. Due to its rarity, research within this field is still limited. Aside from clinical analysis using established scales, gait analysis has been employed to enhance the understanding of the mechanisms behind the disease. However, state of the art gait analysis systems are often large, immobile and expensive. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents the first clinically relevant mobile gait analysis system for HSP patients. We propose an

General Intelligence Framework to Predict Virus Adaptation Based on a Genome Language Model.

Most human viral pandemics are caused by animal-originated viruses with human adaptation. It is challenging to infer adaptation from viral genes or their coded protein sequences, particularly when the data labels for modeling are inadequate or the input sequence to be predicted is incomplete. Here, we developed a semi-supervised General Intelligence framework to predict Virus Adaptation based on Language-model-embedded protein sequences (GIVAL) for blind input of virus sequences. The language model in GIVAL, named virus Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (vBERT), was pretr

MapperEEG: A topological approach to brain state clustering in EEG recordings.

BACKGROUND: Topological data analysis (TDA) has exploded as a tool for analyzing and making sense of high dimensional datasets across a variety of fields. Mapper is a tool from TDA that captures low-dimensional structure from high-dimensional data, precisely the approach needed to capture relevant information from high-dimensional neural time series. Electrical potential scalp recording, or electroencephalography (EEG), is routinely used in clinical applications and research studies thanks to its noninvasive nature, relatively inexpensive equipment, and high temporal resolution. But, it is pro

Genomic and metagenomic survey of microbial carbonic anhydrase genes reveals novel clades, high diversity, and biome specificity.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzymes catalyze the interconversion of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate with an efficiency exceeded only by superoxide dismutase. CA enzymes have evolved convergently in phylogenetically distant organisms, forming eight structurally unrelated classes that share physiological functions involved in photosynthesis, respiration, pH homeostasis, CO2 transport, and carbonyl sulfide hydrolysis that play central roles in medicine and the environment. Here, we leverage the recent surge in publicly available genomes and metagenomes to re-examine our understanding of the abundance,

Sleep and Activity Patterns in Depression From Wearable Data: Unsupervised Clustering Study.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to advance our understanding of depression have long been constrained by the disorder's vast symptom heterogeneity and by the reliance on self-report, which offers only a partial view of phenotypic expression. Digital phenotyping provides an opportunity to address these core challenges by generating real-time, objective data on behavior and physiology, offering new perspectives on understanding depression phenotypes. Yet, prior efforts to identify such objectively derived subtypes have relied on predefined diagnostic labels or supervised models, limiting discovery to existi

Modeling Driver Adaptation Patterns During Remote Driving.

ObjectiveTo identify driving maneuvers in remote driving under end-to-end latency and examine operator adaptation through within-session maneuver transitions.BackgroundRemote driving systems enable operators to control highly automated vehicles when systems encounter operational limits. End-to-end latency disrupts adaptation and vehicle control, although operators may adjust driving behavior. Research on within-session adaptation clusters and maneuvers emerging under latency remains limited.MethodThirty-six participants completed nine remote driving simulator sessions, navigating construction

Vegetation greenness and heat load drive the movements of a water-dependent, selective grazer.

Low-density, selective grazers with restricted habitat requirements may be particularly vulnerable to extinction under hotter, drier conditions expected across Africa's drylands with climate change. We evaluated how spatiotemporal variation in vegetation greenness and environmental heat load influenced movements of sable antelope, a water-dependent African grazer with selective resource requirements. We recorded hourly Global Positioning System (GPS) locations of 10 sable antelopes (Hippotragus niger) in Bwabwata National Park, Namibia, for up to 24 months, with concurrent hourly measurements

The hidden brain-state dynamics of tACS aftereffects.

Non-invasive techniques to electrically stimulate the brain such as transcranial direct and alternating current stimulation (tDCS/tACS) are increasingly used in human neuroscience and offer potential new avenues to treat brain disorders. Previous research has shown that stimulation effects may depend on brain-states. However, this work mostly focused on experimentally induced brain-states over the course of several minutes. Besides such global, long-term changes in brain-states, previous research suggests, that the brain is likely to spontaneously alternate between states in sub-second ranges,

The diversity of ABC transporter genes across the Phylum Nematoda.

It is estimated that one billion people globally are infected by parasitic nematodes, with children, pregnant women, and the elderly particularly susceptible to morbidity from infection. Control methods are limited to de-worming, which is hampered by rapid re-infection and the inevitable development of anthelmintic resistance. One family of proteins that has been implicated in nematode anthelmintic resistance are the ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABC transporters are characterized by a highly conserved ATP-binding domain and variable transmembrane regions. A growing number of studie

Generalized Cytokine Increase in the Setting of a Multisystem Clinical Disorder and Carcinoid Syndrome Associated with a Novel NLRP12 Variant.

BACKGROUND: Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptors (NLRs) are a group of cytoplasmic sensors that survey danger signals released by invading pathogens or damaged tissue. Mutations in the NLRP subfamily affect pro-inflammatory mediators and cause nonspecific systemic symptoms. AIMS: We sought to identify a potential genetic etiology of an inflammatory syndrome in a patient that presented with an atypical multisystem illness with carcinoid syndrome as well as atopic and autoimmune features.
