Demographic factors and correlates of trust in types of people and information sources: findings from the SAM-KAP Alabama youth survey on HIV prevention.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority adolescents (SGM) experience higher rates of discrimination than heterosexual and cisgender peers, which may lead to adverse health behaviors, including condomless sex. Experienced discrimination and stigmatization may lead SGM adolescents to disproportionately seek information online around HIV risk and prevention. Understanding trusted sources of information among SGM adolescents is critical to addressing the HIV epidemic. METHODS: Two hundred six SGM adolescents, with male sex assigned at birth, aged 14-17 years, were recruited in-person from an LGBTQ

Men at risk: correlates of verbal, physical and sexual violence against men who have sex with men across selected cities in India.

BACKGROUND: Five distinct forms of violence - Physical, Verbal, Sexual, Cyber, and Relational - persistently afflict sexual minorities worldwide. The presence of feminine attributes in Men who have Sex with Men is inherently linked to a heightened susceptibility to various manifestations of violence, thereby exerting detrimental repercussions on both the physical and mental well-being of these individuals. This correlation stands as a principal contributor to the alarmingly elevated rates of suicide attempts among Men who have Sex with Men, particularly during their early years. DATA AND METH

HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Use Among South Asian Sexual Minority Men in the United States: Pilot Web-Based Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: South Asian American gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) experience multiple minority stressors, such as internalized homophobia, racial prejudice, and homonegative discrimination, thereby elevating their risk of HIV. Due to the scarcity of HIV scientific literature focusing on South Asian American GBM, little is known about their use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or the upstream factors influencing its uptake. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to address this gap by describing PrEP use history among South Asian American GBM and comparing PrEP users and nonuser

Intersectional associations between minority stressors, resilience and substance misuse in the United States sexual minority populations: a cross-sectional MAIHDA analysis of the generation study.

OBJECTIVES: Our study aims to investigate the associations between sexual minority stressors, resilience factors and substance misuse outcomes, using an intersectional framework to examine heterogeneities across sexual minority populations (SMPs) in the United States of America (USA). We hypothesised that stressors would be positively associated with substance use, and that resilience factors would be negatively associated, with these associations varying across intersectional strata. DESIGN: The current study employed a secondary data analysis strategy to analyse cross-sectional data using B

Toxicity on Social Media During the 2022 Mpox Public Health Emergency: Quantitative Study of Topical and Network Dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Toxicity on social media, encompassing behaviors such as harassment, bullying, hate speech, and the dissemination of misinformation, has become a pressing social concern in the digital age. Its prevalence intensifies during periods of social crises and unrest, eroding a sense of safety and community. Such toxic environments can adversely impact the mental well-being of those exposed and further deepen societal divisions and polarization. The 2022 mpox outbreak, initially called "monkeypox" but later renamed to reduce stigma and address societal concerns, provides a relevant context

Association of internalised homonegativity with partner notification after diagnosis of syphilis or gonorrhoea among men having sex with men in 49 countries across four continents.

BACKGROUND: Partner notification (PN) after a sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis is being promoted as a means to interrupt transmission chains. We investigated whether Internalised Homonegativity (IH) is associated with PN among men having sex with men (MSM). METHODS: PN, defined as notifying at least one partner after diagnosis of syphilis and gonorrhoea, was queried in two internet-based self-completion surveys conducted between Oct 2017 and May 2018 in 68 countries in Europe, Latin America, Canada, and the Philippines. IH is defined by a man's level of agreement or disagreement

mHealth Strategies Related to HIV Postexposure Prophylaxis Knowledge and Access: Systematic Literature Review, Technology Prospecting of Patent Databases, and Systematic Search on App Stores.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the number of HIV cases continue to increase, despite the development of multiple prevention strategies. New cases of HIV have been reported disproportionately more in men who have sex with men and other vulnerable populations. Issues such as internalized and structural homophobia prevent these men from accessing prevention strategies such as postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). Mobile health (mHealth) interventions are known to be one of the newest and preferred options to enhance PEP knowledge and access. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the mobi

[Distinguishing normal identity formation process for sexual minorities from obsessive compulsive disorder with sexual orientation obsessions].

Objectives In synthesizing a homosexual or bisexual identity, an individual may go through different stages before coming to a positive healthy identity. It is likely that there will be a period in which homosexual yearnings will be unwanted. Sometimes this distress leads the person to consult a health professional. Conversion therapy has been proven both ineffective and harmful and therefore has been ethically prohibited by all major psychiatric and psychological associations. The responsible clinician will attempt to assist the individual in his acceptance of his sexual minority. Occasionall

Increasing rates of sexually transmitted diseases in homosexual men in Western europe and the United States: why?

The recent increases in acute STDs among MSM must be viewed in the context of a post-AIDS era that is characterized by demographic shifts, changing sexual attitudes, and rapidly changing social contexts. A key driver seems to be the growing prevalent pool of HIV-positive MSM for whom the crucial motivator for safer sex (primary HIV prevention) no longer exists and where, given the prevalence of seroconcordant sexual mixing, consider-able uncertainty and conflicting advice regarding the rationale and benefits for continued safer-sex practice are unclear [105,106]. Although it is tempting to ascr

Cisgenderism and transphobia in sexual health care and associations with testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections: Findings from the Australian Trans & Gender Diverse Sexual Health Survey.

Transgender and gender diverse people have unique risks and needs in the context of sexual health, but little is known about sexual health care for this population. In 2018, a national, online survey of sexual health and well-being was conducted with trans and gender diverse people in Australia (n = 1,613). Data from this survey were analysed to describe uptake of sexual health care and experiences of interpersonal and structural cisgenderism and transphobia. Experiences of cisgenderism and transphobia in sexual health care were assessed using a new, four-item scale of 'gender insensitivity',

Relationship Dynamics in the Context of Binge Drinking and Polydrug Use Among Same-Sex Male Couples in Atlanta, Boston, and Chicago.

An estimated one- to two-thirds of incident HIV infections among U.S. men who have sex with men (MSM) occur within the context of a primary relationship. The existing, yet limited, literature on sexual risk behavior among same-sex couples suggests that MSM with main partners are more often to report having lower perceived HIV risk, higher unrecognized HIV infection, and increased frequency of condomless anal intercourse with their primary partner. Furthermore, numerous studies document the strong relationship between polydrug use and binge drinking with HIV infection among MSM. However, more r

Challenges and opportunities in developing integrated sexual and reproductive health programmes.

Sexual and reproductive health and rights are fundamental to both human and societal wellbeing and sustainable development, and encompass a broad array of sociocultural and clinical issues that affect all people across the life course. In 2018, the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission described sexual and reproductive health as a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social wellbeing in relation to all aspects of sexuality and reproduction, not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction, or infirmity. The Commission advocated for a positive approach to sexuality and reproduction that recognises th

Unhealthy environments, unhealthy consequences: Experienced homonegativity and HIV infection risk among young men who have sex with men.

Unfavourable social environments can negatively affect the health of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). We described how experienced homonegativity - negative perceptions and treatment that MSM encounter due to their sexual orientations - can increase HIV vulnerability among young MSM. Participants (n = 44) were young MSM diagnosed with HIV infection during January 2006-June 2009. All participants completed questionnaires that assessed experienced homonegativity and related factors (e.g. internalised homonegativity). We focus this analysis on qualitative interviews in wh

The Dose Response Effects of Digital HIV Care Navigation on Mental Health and Viral Suppression Among Young People Living With HIV: Single-Arm, Prospective Study With a Pre-Post Design.

BACKGROUND: The HIV epidemic has revealed considerable disparities in health among sexual and gender minorities of color within the Unites States, disproportionately affecting cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) and trans women. Social inequities further disadvantage those with intersectional identities through homophobia, antitrans discrimination, and racism, shaping not only those at risk for HIV infection but also HIV prevention and care outcomes. Digital interventions have great potential to address barriers and improve HIV care among cisgender MSM and trans women; however, efficacy

Understanding the experiences and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans Australians living with dementia, and their partners.

AIM: To outline the experiences and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) Australians living with dementia - and their partners. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with LGBT people, their partners and service providers. RESULTS: LGBT people living with dementia experience unique challenges including the failure of some families of origin and service providers to understand and value their sexual orientation or gender identity. The fear of discrimination by service providers results in greater reliance on intimate partners for care and compounds social isolation. CONCLUSI

Neighborhoods, Networks, and HIV Care Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Proposal for a Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: The majority of people living with HIV in the United States are men who have sex with men (MSM), with race- and ethnicity-based disparities in HIV rates and care continuum. In order to uncover the neighborhood- and network-involved pathways that produce HIV care outcome disparities, systematic, theory-based investigation of the specific and intersecting neighborhood and social network characteristics that relate to the HIV care continuum must be engaged. OBJECTIVE: Using socioecological and intersectional conceptual frameworks, we aim to identify individual-, neighborhood-, and ne

The influence of minority stress on indicators of suicidality among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults in Thailand.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Established research from the United States and other Western countries has found that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) populations are at an elevated risk for suicide. Suicidality among LGBT individuals is understudied in Thailand and other Asian countries, warranting additional research to better understand risk factors and to create effective treatment and suicide prevention interventions. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The study examined rates and predictors of suicidality in Thai LGBT adults. Study findings suggest that

It is more than sex and clothes: Culturally safe services for older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.

This paper outlines the development of culturally safe services for older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. It draws on a framework for cultural safety, developed in New Zealand which incorporates an understanding of how history, culture and power imbalances influence the relationship between service providers and Maori people. This has been adapted to the needs of older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex Australians.

Acceptance and Commitment to Empowerment Intervention to Reduce HIV Stigma and Promote Community Resilience: Protocol for an Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: Racialized immigrants are disproportionately impacted by HIV in Canada. In 2022, 69.5% of first-time HIV cases, where race and/or ethnicity was reported, were among racialized individuals: Indigenous (22.6%), Black (18.0%), Asian and Arab (16.3%), and Latinx (10.1%). HIV vulnerability in racialized communities is reinforced by HIV stigma intersecting with prejudice and discrimination associated with racism, gendered oppression, homophobia, and economic marginalization. Stigma and discrimination impede public health efforts in HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care. OBJECTIVE
