[The Life Style Index: correlations with psychological distress and hostility].

The Life Style Index (LSI) was designed to assess defense mechanisms, assuming that their use is related to specific emotional states and diagnostic concepts. Aiming to further investigate the psychometric properties of the Greek version of the LSI, the aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship of specific defense mechanisms with dimensions of psychological distress and hostility features in three different populations. The sample comprised 1261 adults (410 healthy participants, 723 medical patients and 128 psychiatric patients). Along with defense mechanisms (LSI), Psycholo

Citalopram intervention for hostility: results of a randomized clinical trial.

Hostility is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Because central serotonin may modulate aggression, we might expect selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to be effective in reducing hostility. Such effects have never been examined in individuals scoring high on hostility who are otherwise free from major Axis I psychopathology according to criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., Text Revision; American Psychiatric Association, 2000). A total of 159 participants (ages 30?50 years, 50% female) scoring high on 2 mea

Hostility and smoking cessation treatment outcome in heavy social drinkers.

Hostility is a multifaceted construct encompassing affective, behavioral, and cognitive aspects. There is preliminary evidence linking hostility to poorer outcomes in smoking cessation treatment; however, it is unclear which components of hostility are most important in cessation. In this study, the authors examined multiple aspects of trait hostility in 92 heavy social drinkers who were seeking smoking cessation treatment. Consistent with their hypothesis, the authors found that the cognitive component of hostility was most relevant to smoking cessation outcome. Specifically, those who expres

Reliability reporting across studies using the Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory.

Empirical research on anger and hostility has pervaded the academic literature for more than 50 years. Accurate measurement of anger/hostility and subsequent interpretation of results requires that the instruments yield strong psychometric properties. For consistent measurement, reliability estimates must be calculated with each administration, because changes in sample characteristics may alter the scale's ability to generate reliable scores. Therefore, the present study was designed to address reliability reporting practices for a widely used anger assessment, the Buss Durkee Hostility Inven

[Effect of hostility on salivary cortisol levels in university students].

The influence of hostility on cortisol levels in saliva was investigated in 47 university students (27 males and 20 females). The students were divided into high and low hostility groups by cluster analyses based on their scores on the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire and the Müller Anger Coping Questionnaire. Their saliva was collected twice, in the morning immediately after awakening at a two week interval. On the day before saliva collection, they completed questionnaires about stressful events and their moods in the previous two weeks. The results of the ANOVA showed higher cortisol lev

Influence of apologies and trait hostility on recovery from anger.

While there is growing evidence that quick recovery from stress is health-protective, relatively little is known about what factors affect recovery rates. We tested whether recovery from anger can be diffused with apologies. 184 participants performed a stress task involving verbal harassment and apologies. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: non-harassed control, good apology, pseudo-apology, or no apology. Measures of blood pressure and heart rate were taken at baseline, task and recovery periods. Participants scoring high in trait hostility displayed faster systol

Hostility predicts metabolic syndrome risk factors in children and adolescents.

The authors tested in 134 African American and European American children whether hostility measured at study entry predicted the metabolic syndrome risk factors an average of 3 years later. Hostility was measured with the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (W. W. Cook & D. M. Medley, 1954) and with ratings of Potential for Hostility from interview responses. Metabolic syndrome was based on having at least 2 of the following risk factors above the 75th percentile of scores for their age, race, and gender group: body mass index, insulin resistance index, ratio of triglycerides to high-density lipoprot

Plasma homocysteine concentrations are positively associated with hostility and anger.

Homocysteine is a sulphur amino acid that is positively associated with risk of vascular disease. Very few behavioral or psychological factors have been studied in relationship to homocysteine levels, despite the fact that several psychological factors have also been linked with risk for cardiovascular disease. One psychological attribute showing a strong association with risk is hostility, which is prospectively predictive of future cardiovascular disease endpoints. Another related psychological factor is anger expression; coronary heart disease risk is associated with both heightened express

Aggression Questionnaire hostility scale predicts anger in response to mistreatment.

We tested the hypotheses that the hostility and anger scales of the Buss and Perry (1992) [Buss, A. H. & Perry, M. (1992). The Aggression Questionnaire. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 63, 452-459.] Aggression Questionnaire would predict anger in college students in response to mistreatment. We found low and high hostility groups did not differ in anger at baseline or after completing a task without provocation, but the high hostility group reported greater anger than the low group after the onset of provocation, which required all students to redo completed tasks because some st

Anger, hostility, and visceral adipose tissue in healthy postmenopausal women.

Central obesity is an important risk factor for chronic disease. Its etiology remains unclear. We examined whether anger and hostility, ie, psychological attributes that influence cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, prospectively predict central visceral obesity across 13 years. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) was determined by x-ray computed tomography (CT) at the L4-L5 disc space in a population-based sample of 157 postmenopausal Healthy Women Study participants. Standardized tests were completed to measure separately trait anger (anger frequency and intensity), style of anger expression (

Trait hostility and ambulatory cardiovascular activity: responses to social interaction.

This study examined trait hostility and social interaction in relation to ambulatory cardiovascular activity in 40 male and 39 female undergraduates. Participants wore an ambulatory blood pressure monitor and completed diary entries while engaged in everyday activities. Diary reports indicating that participants had been talking were used to identify cardiovascular readings taken during social interaction. Interaction effects for overall diastolic blood pressure and heart rate levels indicated that hostility was positively associated with these variables in men only. In addition, hostility was

Serum lipid concentrations, hostility and cardiovascular reactions to mental stress.

The objective of the present study was to determine whether serum lipid concentrations interact with hostility to affect cardiovascular responses to mental stress. One-hundred and seventy-four male subjects were screened with the Cook and Medley hostility scale (Ho), the anger expression inventory by Spielberger and a general health questionnaire. Subjects in the upper (n = 22) and lower (n = 22) quartile of the Ho score distribution were asked to take part in a laboratory experiment. Continuous measures of heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and electrodermal activity were taken while par

Work group culture, stress, and hostility. Correlations with organizational outcomes.

Understanding your organizational culture is necessary if you are to be successful in making and surviving the necessary changes in current environments. Although organizational culture frequently has been studied in the business community, there are fewer studies of organizational or work group culture in hospital settings at the nursing unit level. The existing studies have emphasized the need to understand the individual work group culture before successfully implementing innovation and educational programs, or hiring and orienting new employees on nursing units. This descriptive, correlati

Age differences in hostility among middle-aged and older adults.

Multiple measures of hostility were administered to middle-aged and older volunteers. There was a positive association between age and self-report measures reflecting hostile beliefs about others, including cynicism and suspiciousness. There was a weak inverse relationship between age and self-report measures of the overt expression of anger and aggression, but no association between age and measures of covert hostility was found. There was a positive relationship between age and an assessment of hostile behavior that was based on the respondent's interaction style during an interview. The mag

Participation in alternative care: relationship to anxiety, depression, and hostility.

Women's psychological mood and its relationship to satisfaction with participatory perinatal care was examined using a two-group evaluation design of convenience samples (N = 99). Women entered the perinatal experience with similar degrees of anxiety, depression and hostility, but contrary to prediction, the type of perinatal experience, conventional or alternative, was not associated with their psychological mood. However, women in both groups reported less anxiety 2 to 3 days and 4 weeks after delivery than they reported having in general prior to delivery. Women who were more satisfied with

The present study assessed the convergent and discriminant validity of multidimensional measures of anger and hostility and validated abbreviated neurotic and reactive hostility subscales of the Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory. Dysfunctional parenting and suicidal ideation: The moderating role of hostility.

Childhood maltreatment stemming from dysfunctional parenting is a well-established risk factor for suicidal ideation. In turn, dysfunctional parenting has been linked to an increased tendency to develop hostility, which often relates to self-directed aggression and suicide. However, the interactive role of hostility in shaping the relationship between dysfunctional parenting and suicidal ideation remains largely understudied, as do the distinct contributions of maternal and paternal dysfunctional parenting to these associations. The present cross-sectional study sought to address these gaps by
