Effect of humic acid on bioreduction of facet-dependent hematite by Shewanella putrefaciens CN-32.

Interfacial reactions between iron (Fe) (hydr)oxide surfaces and the activity of bacteria during dissimilatory Fe reduction affect extracellular electron transfer. The presence of organic matter (OM) and exposed facets of Fe (hydr)oxides influence this process. However, the underlying interfacial mechanism of facet-dependent hematite and its toxicity toward microbes during bioreduction in the presence of OM remains unknown. Herein, humic acid (HA), as typical OM, was selected to investigate its effect on the bioreduction of hematite {100} and {001}. When HA concentration was increased from 0 t

Effects of phosphate, silicate, humic acid, and calcium on the release of As(V) co-precipitated with Fe(III) and Fe(II) during aging.

The effects of phosphate (P), silicate (Si), humic acid (HA), and calcium (Ca) on the release of As(V) co-precipitated with Fe(III) and Fe(II) during aging were investigated. As(V) in synthetic groundwater could be efficiently removed by both Fe(III) and Fe(II) processes. The addition of P remarkably decreased As(V) removal efficiency while no obvious release of As(V) during aging was observed. Si and HA reduced As(V) removal to a less extent than P but caused notable As(V) release during aging. FTIR spectra and particle size of the precipitates before and after aging indicated that As(V) rele

Multiple Effects of Humic Components on Microbially Mediated Iron Redox Processes and Production of Hydroxyl Radicals.

Microbially mediated iron redox processes are of great significance in the biogeochemical cycles of elements, which are often coupled with soil organic matter (SOM) in the environment. Although the influences of SOM fractions on individual reduction or oxidation processes have been studied extensively, a comprehensive understanding is still lacking. Here, using ferrihydrite, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, and operationally defined SOM components including fulvic acid (FA), humic acid (HA), and humin (HM) extracted from black soil and peat, we explored the SOM-mediated microbial iron reduction and

Chemical Fingerprinting of HULIS in Particulate Matters Emitted from Residential Coal and Biomass Combustion.

Identification of humic-like substances (HULIS) structures and components is still a major challenge owing to their chemical complexity. This study first employed a complementary method with the combination of two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry to address low-polarity and polar components of HULIS in PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm), respectively. The combination method showed a significant correlation in identifying overlapping species and performed we

The role of interfacial reactions in controlling the distribution of Cd within goethite-humic acid-bacteria composites.

Mineral-organic interfacial reactions strongly influence the adsorption, distribution and bioavailability of metal cations in soil systems. The molecular binding mechanisms and distribution of Cd onto goethite, humic acid, Pseudomonas putida cells, and their composites at different mass ratios were studied through the combination of bulk adsorption coupled with EXAFS, ITC and SCM. In binary and ternary composites, the energetics of the overall adsorption of Cd was dominated by the entropy of Cd adsorption onto the organic fraction. The formation of a type-B HA bridging complex >FeOH-HACOOCdOH

Photoformation of persistent free radicals on a montmorillonite-humic acid complex simulated as particulate organic matter in an aqueous solution.

This study investigates the formation of persistent free radicals (PFRs) on particulate organic matter (POM) under irradiation in water. A montmorillonite-humic acid complex (Mnt-HA complex) was prepared to simulate POM, and the generated PFRs were detected by the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique. EPR signals with the trend of an initial increase and then a decrease were observed under irradiation for 8 days, and the g factors were in the range of 2.0034-2.0039, which indicated the generation of carbon-centered radicals with electrophilic moieties. Different concentrations and t

Electrocatalytic degradation of humic acid using particle electrodes of activated carbon loaded with metallic cobalt.

A column granular electrode loaded with metallic cobalt was prepared using powder activated carbon (namely Co/AC) and used in a continuous electrochemical reactor to degrade humic acid (HA). The results of XRD indicated that the form of catalyst prepared at 600 °C for 4 h mainly consisted of Co0, whereas it consisted of CoO when prepared at 450-500 °C for 4 h. The Co0 possessed better catalytic effects in the degradation of HA than CoO. When C0 of HA was 200 mg L-1, the C/C0 approached 0.06-0.12 under 0.1 A, pH of 7.0, 0.01 M Na2SO4, and 20 min of hydraulic retention time (HRT). The current, H

Effects of laboratory biotic aging on the characteristics of biochar and its water-soluble organic products.

Effects of biotic aging on the characteristics of biochar and its water-soluble organic products were determined through a one-year laboratory incubation study. Biochar had a positive influence on microbial population size. Without microbial addition, biochars showed little change, except for an obvious increase in oxygen content from 3.2% to 6.3% after one year. By contrast, the carbon (C) content of the biologically-aged biochars continually decreased throughout the incubation at two humidity levels, suggesting that microbes consumed biochar C or encouraged organic matter solubilization. Charophytes collapse beyond a critical warming and brownification threshold in shallow lake systems.

Charophytes play a critical role for the functioning of shallow lake ecosystems. Although growth of charophytes can be limited by many factors, such as temperature, nutrients and light availability, our understanding about concomitant effects of climate warming and other large-scale environmental perturbations, e.g. increases in humic matter content ('brownification') is still limited. Here we conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment during 71days with a common charophyte species, Chara vulgaris, along an increasing gradient of temperature and brownification. We hypothesized the growth of C. v

High-efficiency removal of Pb(II) and humate by a CeO2-MoS2 hybrid magnetic biochar.

This work prepares a novel CeO2-MoS2 hybrid magnetic biochar (CMMB) for the adsorptive removal of Pb(II) and humate from aqueous solution. The CMMB was evaluated against magnetic biochar (MB). The results showed that CMMB exhibited strong magnetic separation ability. Hybridization of CMMB greatly improved Pb(II) and humate removal compared to MB, with >99% Pb(II) and humate removed within 6 h. Pb(II) and humate removal capacities of CMMB were 263.6 mg/g and 218.0 mg/g, respectively, with negligible influence of ion strength in the range of 0-0.1 mol/L NaNO3. Pb(II) removal mechanism involved p

[Adsorption Characteristics for Humic Acid by Binary Systems Containing Kaolinite and Goethite].

In this study, the binary systems of kaolinite-goethite mixture (KGM) and kaolinite-goethite complex (KGC) were prepared by different methods, and the surface properties and humic acid adsorption of the samples were investigated. Results showed that the specific surface area (SSA) of the samples followed the order of goethite> KGC> KGM> kaolinite, and the SSAs increased significantly for KGC while slightly for KGM when compared to the average value of kaolinite and goethite. The isoelectric point (IEP) of kaolinite, goethite, KGM and KGC appeared around 3.2, 7.9, 6.1 and 6.7, and the Zeta pote

Adsorption of sulfonamides to demineralized pine wood biochars prepared under different thermochemical conditions.

The main objective of this study was to understand the key factors and mechanisms controlling adsorption of sulfonamides to biochars. Batch adsorption experiments were performed for sulfamethoxazole and sulfapyridine to three pine-wood biochars prepared under different thermochemical conditions: pyrolysis at 400 °C (C400) and 500 °C (C500), and pyrolysis at 500 °C followed with hydrogenation (C500-H). For both sulfonamides, the adsorbent surface area-normalized adsorption was stronger to C500 than to C400. This is attributable to the enhanced π-π electron-donor-acceptor interaction with the ca

Black shale as a sorbent for trichloroethylene and Cr(VI).

Black shale was examined as a natural sorbent for organic and inorganic contaminants. Trichloroethylene (TCE) could be removed well from the water by sorption onto the locally available black shale because of the high organic carbon content (5.2%) of the black shale in this study. Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) was mainly removed by ionic sorption and reduction in batch and column experiments. Amphiphilic humic acid was also sorbed onto the black shale and could facilitate the sorption of TCE at the same time. Humic acid also enhanced the removal of Cr(VI) by reduction and sorption, but the amount

Composition of dissolved organic matter controls interactions with La and Al ions: Implications for phosphorus immobilization in eutrophic lakes.

Applications of aluminium (Al) salt or lanthanum (La) modified bentonite (LMB) have become popular methodologies for immobilizing phosphorus (P) in eutrophic lakes. The presence of humic substances, has been shown to inhibit this form of treatment due to the complexation with La/Al. However, the effects of other dissolved organic matter (DOM), especially that derived from phytoplankton (the dominant source in eutrophic lakes) are unknown. In this study, the interaction with La/Al of Suwannee River Standard Humic Acid Standard II (SRHA) and algae-derived DOM (ADOM) were investigated and compare

Seasonal reversal of river-groundwater exchange controls dissolved organic matter dynamics across the arid margin of the Tibetan Plateau.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a key regulator of carbon cycling and water quality within surface water-groundwater interaction (SGI) zones. However, how the seasonal reorganization of SGI governs DOM dynamics in high-altitude arid basins remains poorly understood. Focusing on the Golmud River Basin along the arid Tibetan Plateau margin, this study systematically examines the spatiotemporal evolution of river-groundwater exchange and its influence on DOM sources, composition, and transport along a continuous transect from mountainous headwaters through alluvial fans to salinized plains. LC-MS analysis in the aquatic environment and in water treatment technology--a critical review. Part II: Applications for emerging contaminants and related pollutants, microorganisms and humic acids.

Environmental contaminants of recent concern are pharmaceuticals, estrogens and other endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) such as degradation products of surfactants, algal and cyanobacterial toxins, disinfection by-products (DBPs) and metalloids. In addition, pesticides (especially their transformation products), microorganisms, and humic substances (HS), in their function as vehicles for contaminants and as precursors for by-products in water treatment, traditionally play an important role. The present status of the application of LC-MS techniques for these water constituents are discussed

Humic acid aggregates with laccase and decreases the performance of the enzyme catalytic systems through various mechanisms.

Laccases are among the best-rated enzymes for industrial and environmental applications, yet their use in bioremediation is limited by interference from environmental components like humic acid (HA). This study evaluated HA impact on the oxidation of 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate (ABTS) and two model pollutants - anthracene and methyl orange - by laccase(-mediator) systems. HA consistently diminished conversion rates, with EC50 values between 5 and 51 mg/L suggesting diverse inhibitory mechanisms. We investigated potential mechanisms including substrate sequestration, rad

Biogenic amorphous FeOOH activated additional intracellular electron flow pathways for accelerating reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene.

Dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) with extracellular electron transfer (EET) capabilities have shown significant potential for bioremediating halogenated hydrocarbon contaminated sites rich in iron and humic substances. However, the role and microbial molecular mechanisms of iron-humic acid (Fe-HA) complexes in the reductive dehalogenation process of DIRB remains inadequately elucidated. In this study, we developed a sustainable carbon cycling approach using Fe-HA complexes to modulate the electron flux from sawdust (SD), enabling almost complete reductive dechlorination by most DIRB

Sorption of Eu(III) on attapulgite studied by batch, XPS, and EXAFS techniques.

The effects of pH, ionic strength, and temperature on sorption of Eu(III) on attapulgite were investigated in the presence and absence of fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA). The results indicated that the sorption of Eu(III) on attapulgite was strongly dependent on pH and ionic strength, and independent of temperature. In the presence of FA/HA, Eu(III) sorption was enhanced at pH < 4, decreased at pH range of 4-6, and then increased again at pH > 7. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis suggested that the sorption of Eu(III) might be expressed as is identical to X3Eu0, is ident
