The pathogenesis of fetal hypokinesia. A neurological study of 75 cases of congenital contractures with emphasis on cerebral lesions.

A comprehensive prospective clinical study is presented of 75 cases of fetal hypokinesia and congenital contractures of various causes, with neuropathological investigation in 23 cases. With the data of medical history, neurological examination, laboratory tests and neuropathology an exact or probable nosological or syndromal diagnosis could be made in 61 cases. These cases were categorized by localisation of causal pathology in the subsequent levels of the developing motor system. In 14 of 61 cases developmental brain disorders (f.i. hydrocephalus, hydranencephaly, microcephaly) were the caus

Phenotypic spectrum of NDE1-related disorders: from microlissencephaly to microhydranencephaly.

Biallelic variants in the NDE1 gene have been shown to occur in extreme microcephaly. Most of the patients displayed microlissencephaly but one with microhydranencephaly. We report on three sibs in which the brain MRI and CT scans demonstrated variable degree of reduced volume of cerebral hemispheres and ventriculomegaly. Further, they had agenesis of corpus callosum, cerebellar, and brainstem hypoplasia. Fetal ultrasound at 32 weeks' gestation of the third sib revealed severe micrencephaly with extensive hydranencephaly and an anomaly consistent with non cleaved (fused) thalami. Because of th

Behavioral assessment of a hydranencephalic neonate.

This study attempted to clarify the role of the cerebral cortex in neonatal behavior by administering the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale-Kansas revision to a hydranencephalic infant; particularly of interest were behaviors that are implicated in infant social responsiveness. The examination revealed extremely deviant responses on portions of the exam, including items that measure response decrement and orientation. However, this infant was observed to approximate normal neonatal responding on items relating to motor maturity and reactivity. Other findings included that some response decr

Craniosynostosis, microcephaly, hydrancephaly, humero-radial synostosis, and thumb aplasia: a new syndrome?

We describe a growth-retarded newborn infant with craniosynostosis, microcephaly, hydrancephaly, oligodactyly, humero-radial synostosis, and normal chromosomes. The combination of anomalies has hitherto been unreported and we consider this to be a "new" syndrome.

[Csf ex vacuo (author's transl)].

CSF ex vacuo is a proposed designation for abnormal collection of CSF replacing brain tissue which has been lost by trauma, infection, hemorrhage etc., or which has not been developed e.g. in aplasia of the temporal lobe. Such collections are known as arachnoid, leptomeningeal or porencephalic cysts. Under certain, however unsufficiently understood, conditions CSF ex vacuo may develop expansive tendencies, most obvious in growing fracture of the skull vault or base. In unexplained recurrent meningitis the presence of a frontobasal CSF collection should be looked for.

Biallelic variation in the choline and ethanolamine transporter FLVCR1 underlies a severe developmental disorder spectrum.

PURPOSE: FLVCR1 encodes a solute carrier protein implicated in heme, choline, and ethanolamine transport. Although Flvcr1-/- mice exhibit skeletal malformations and defective erythropoiesis reminiscent of Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA), biallelic FLVCR1 variants in humans have previously only been linked to childhood or adult-onset ataxia, sensory neuropathy, and retinitis pigmentosa. METHODS: We identified individuals with undiagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders and biallelic FLVCR1 variants through international data sharing and characterized the functional consequences of their FLVCR1 vari

Congenital cerebral and cerebellar anomalies in relation to bovine viral diarrhoea virus and Akabane virus in newborn calves.

Congenital malformations occur sporadically in cattle; however, congenital structural and functional disorders of the nervous system are rather common in ruminants. Among the numerous causes of congenital nervous system defects, infectious agents are highlighted in this paper. Virus-induced congenital malformations are well known, among which those caused by bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), Akabane virus (AKAV), Schmallenberg virus (SBV), Bluetongue virus (BTV), and Aino virus (AV) are the most studied. In this study, we specify and categorise macroscopic and histopathological lesions in t

Congenital malformations caused by Akabane virus in porcine fetuses in southern Japan.

Akabane virus (AKAV) is known as a major teratogenic agent of ruminant fetuses. In this study, we investigated the relationship between porcine abnormal deliveries and AKAV by serology, pathology, and virology investigations using specimens from 16 stillborn fetuses delivered in southern Japan between 2013 and 2015. The major clinical manifestations in stillborn fetuses were hydranencephaly, arthrogryposis, spinal curvature, and both skeletal muscle and subcutaneous edema. Histologic examination of the specimens identified atrophy of skeletal muscle fibers accompanied by adipose replacement. N

Teratogenic bluetongue and related orbivirus infections in pregnant ruminant livestock: timing and pathogen genetics are critical.

Congenital infections of domestic animals with viruses in several families, including Bunyaviridae, Flaviridae, Parvoviridae, and Reoviridae, are the cause of naturally occurring teratogenic central nervous system and/or musculoskeletal defects (arthrogryposis) in domestic animals. Congenital infections of ruminant livestock with bluetongue virus (BTV) and some related members of the genus Orbivirus (family Reoviridae) have clearly shown the critical role of gestational age at infection in determining outcome. Specifically, fetuses infected prior to mid-gestation that survive congenital BTV in

Choroid plexus coagulation for hydrocephalus not due to CSF overproduction: a review.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to review the role of choroid plexus coagulation (CPC) for hydrocephalus not due to CSF overproduction. METHODS: The literatures covering CPC/cauterization/extirpation and ablation searched through PubMed were reviewed. RESULTS: The history of CPC goes back to early 1900s by open surgery. It has evolved to mainly an endoscopic surgery since 1930s. With the development of other treatment methods and the understanding of CSF dynamics, the application of CPC dramatically decreased by 1970s. In late 2000, there was a resurgence of CPC in combination with endoscopic thi

[Disorders of consciousness: the basis for ethical assessment].

During the past few years there is an ethical debate about neurological disease entities that are characterised by a) prolongation of life owing to medical treatment, b) limited chances of cure, and c) impaired to unbearable life quality: akinetic mutism, vegetative state ("Wachkoma", apallic syndrome), and locked-in syndrome. These are compared to typical coma and brain death. According to Gerstenbrand (1967) [34] the vegetative state is differentiated into the transitional state following typical coma, the variations of typical and incomplete vegetative state, the remission state and the "Du

Experimental infection of pregnant goats with Akabane virus.

Ten pregnant goats were inoculated intravenously with a newly isolated strain of Akabane virus. As a result, vertical infection and experimental reproduction of congenital morphological abnormality were accomplished. Fetuses were removed from two of them 10 days after inoculation and used for recovery of the virus. Clinically, the goats were free from any abnormal sign. Mild viremia was demonstrated in one of them inoculated with the virus at 30 days of pregnancy, but the fetus removed from this goat was negative for virus recovery. No viremia was demonstrated in the other one inoculated with

Autonomic failure in hydrencephaly.

Autonomic functions were studied in three patients with hydrencephalus and five with hydrocephalus. Autonomic failure of central origin was found in the patients with hydrencephalus; whereas, those suffering from hydrocephalus had essentially normal autonomic function. In two patients with hydrencephalus, the hypothalamus was markedly abnormal but the rest of the autonomic nervous system was histologically normal. From this it is concluded that in some patients with mental and motor retardation, autonomic failure may be of cerebral origin but that this is not a feature of patients with hydroce

Diagnosis and treatment of herpes simplex 1 virus infection in pregnancy.

A nulliparous woman presented at 21 weeks' gestation with a 72-h history of a rash on her left arm. Initially isolated to the forearm, it had quickly spread, becoming multiple itchy fluid-filled blisters. Blood tests showed mild neutrophilia and raised CRP. Skin swabs demonstrated the presence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) DNA. There was no history of previous HSV1 exposure. There is scant literature on uncomplicated cutaneous HSV1 since the majority is oral/genital. The incidence of transmission varies and is dependent on site of infection and immunological status. Type-specific serol
