Variations in the composition of gelling agents affect morphophysiological and molecular responses to deficiencies of phosphate and other nutrients.

Low inorganic phosphate (Pi) availability triggers an array of spatiotemporal adaptive responses in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). There are several reports on the effects of Pi deprivation on the root system that have been attributed to different growth conditions and/or inherent genetic variability. Here we show that the gelling agents, largely treated as inert components, significantly affect morphophysiological and molecular responses of the seedlings to deficiencies of Pi and other nutrients. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy analysis revealed variable levels of elemental

Reduced Cd accumulation in Zea mays: a protective role for phytosiderophores?

Cadmium is a nonessential trace metal and a frequent soil contaminant. Because plants vary in their accumulation of Cd, an understanding of the specific processes that control uptake could reveal methods for reducing Cd levels in edible plant tissues and conversely increasing Cd accumulation in plants used for phytoremediation. Phytosiderophores are iron chelators excreted by graminaceous plants under conditions of iron limitation, but they also complex other metals including cadmium. Here we examine the influence of Cd exposure on phytosiderophore production by hydroponically grown maize. Cd

Amending the seedling bed of eggplant with biochar can further immobilize Cd in contaminated soils.

UNLABELLED: Untreated municipal sewage is a potential source of Cd but has been used for irrigating vegetables in many countries in recent years. In growing vegetables and fruits in greenhouses, seedling breeding method is generally used in which the seedlings are transplanted into soils together with their seedling culture. Biochar has been increasingly used to amend soils contaminated by heavy metals, but there are few studies on the effectiveness of different ways of applying the biochar. In this paper, we investigated the efficacy of immobilizing Cd by amending eggplant seedling bed with b

Assessment of biomarkers of cadmium stress in lettuce.

Laboratory and field studies have provided encouraging insights into the capacity of plants to act as biomonitors of environmental quality through the use of biomarkers. However, a better understanding of the overall process of Cd-induced senescence, describing the cascade of Cd effects in plants is needed for a selection of relevant biomarkers of Cd stress. In order to approach this, 5-week old Lactuca sativa L. were exposed for 14 days to 100muM Cd(NO(3))(2) and harvested at days 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14. The parameters measured included classical endpoints (shoot and root growth) and biochemical e

Tracing microplastics uptake and translocation in plants using aggregation-induced emission materials.

Microplastics (MPs) can be absorbed by plants and subsequently transferred into the food chain, posing ecological and health risks. However, the investigation of MP absorption and translocation in organisms is highly restricted by the difficulties in separating and quantifying MPs in biological samples. This study utilized aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials as sensitive fluorescent probes that show potential as semi‑quantitative tracers for MPs transport in plants. Self-assembly and swelling methods were adopted to incorporate AIE materials (BB-066 and TPE-NH2) in MPs (PS, PMMA, PLA)

Comparative Phytotoxicity of Leachates from Aircraft and Automobile Tire Wear Particles on Mung Bean (Vigna radiata L.) Seed Germination and Seedling Growth.

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are a significant source of microplastics and chemical additives in the environment; however, differences in the toxicity of particles from different vehicle types remain unclear. This hydroponic study compared the phytotoxicity of leachates from aircraft- and automobile-derived TWPs on mung bean. Both leachates inhibited seed germination and seedling growth, with aircraft TWP leachates showing stronger effects, including greater germination delays and more pronounced reductions in shoot height, root length, and root surface area. Physiological analyses revealed that

Selenium nanoparticles alleviate chromium toxicity in maize via melatonin-mediated regulation of cell wall polysaccharide metabolism and redox homeostasis.

Selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) and melatonin have been shown to alleviate chromium (Cr) toxicity in plants. However, the relationship between Se NPs and melatonin in Cr detoxification remains unclear. This study employed hydroponic experiments to examine the role of melatonin in the Cr stress tolerance induced by Se NPs in maize (Zea mays L.). Cr stress increased Cr accumulation in maize leaves and roots, reduced chlorophyll content and photosynthesis, and decreased dry weight. In contrast, foliar application of 50 μM Se NPs significantly alleviated growth inhibition. Notably, Se NPs signific

Solanoeclepin C, a root-secreted molecule converted by rhizosphere microbes to hatching factors for potato cyst nematodes.

Eclepins are root-secreted compounds that induce the hatching of cyst nematodes. Solanoeclepin A (SEA) and B (SEB) have been isolated as potent hatching factors for potato cyst nematodes (PCNs). SEB is biosynthesized in roots, released into the rhizosphere, and converted into SEA by soil microorganisms. However, given that SEB and SEA exhibit comparable hatching-inducing activity toward PCNs, the ecological significance of microbial solanoeclepin metabolism in eclepin-mediated communication remains unclear. In this study, we identified solanoeclepin C (SEC), a previously unrecognized solanoecl

The effect of plasma-treated nutrient solution on yield, pigments, and mineral content of rocket [Diplotaxis tenuifolia (L.) DC.] grown under different nitrogen fertilization levels.

INTRODUCTION: The non-thermal plasma (NTP) technique has been suggested as a sustainable horticultural practice to promote biomass accumulation, nutrient uptake, N metabolism, and disease prevention in plants. In particular, the potentiality of this technique to promote the natural accumulation of nutrients into plants deserve to be explored as input saving is strongly recommended in the horticultural sector. METHODS: The nutrient solution supplied to a red coloured variety of rocket salad [Diplotaxis tenuifolia (L.) DC. 'Dragon's Tongue'] grown in a hydroponic close loop system was treated w

Hydrogen Sulfide Alleviates Cadmium Stress by Enhancing Photosynthetic Efficiency and Regulating Sugar Metabolism in Wheat Seedlings.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays prominent multifunctional roles in the mediation of various physiological processes and stress responses to plants. In this study, hydroponic experiments were carried out to explore the effects of NaHS pretreatment on the growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under 50 μM cadmium (Cd). Compared with Cd treatment alone, 50 μM NaHS pretreatment increased the plant height, soluble sugar content of shoots and roots, and dry weight of shoots and roots under Cd stress, while the Cd concentration of shoots and roots was significantly reduced by 18.1% and 25.9%, respective

Antibiotic Resistance Gene-Carrying Plasmid Spreads into the Plant Endophytic Bacteria using Soil Bacteria as Carriers.

Applications of animal manure and treated wastewater could enrich antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the plant microbiome. However, the mechanistic studies of the transmission of ARB and ARGs from the environment to plant endophytic bacteria were few. Herein, a genetically engineered fluorescent Escherichia coli harboring a conjugative RP4 plasmid that carries three ARGs was used to trace its spread into Arabidopsis thaliana interior in a tetracycline-amended hydroponic system in the absence or presence of a simulated soil bacterial community. Biofortification of Sodium Selenate Improves Dietary Mineral Contents and Antioxidant Capacity of Culinary Herb Microgreens.

Selenium biofortification of plants has been suggested as a method of enhancing dietary selenium intake to prevent deficiency and chronic disease in humans, while avoiding toxic levels of intake. Popular herbs such as basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), cilantro (Coriandrum sativum L.), and scallions (Allium fistulosum L.) present an opportunity for biofortification as these plants are used for added flavors to meals and are available as microgreens, young plants with increasing popularity in the consumer marketplace. In this study, basil, cilantro, and scallion microgreens were biofortified with sod

Cadmium, copper, and lead accumulation and bioconcentration in the vegetative and reproductive organs of Raphanus sativus: implications for plant performance and pollination.

Several studies have found high levels of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) in honey bee hives located near urbanized or industrial areas. Insect herbivores and pollinators may come in contact with environmental contaminants in the leaves and flowers they forage upon in these areas. Our study quantified which of these metals are accumulated in the tissues of a common weedy plant that can serve as a route of exposure for insects. We grew Raphanus sativus (crop radish) in semi-hydroponic sand culture in the greenhouse. Plants were irrigated with nutrient solutions containing Cd, Cu, or Pb

Seasonal variations and aeration effects on water quality improvements and physiological responses of Nymphaea tetragona Georgi.

Seasonal variations and aeration effects on water quality improvements and the physiological responses of Nymphaea tetragona Georgi were investigated with mesocosm experiments. Plants were hydroponically cultivated in six purifying tanks (aerated, non-aerated) and the characteristics of the plants were measured. Water quality improvements in purifying tanks were evaluated by comparing to the control tanks. The results showed that continuous aeration affected the plant morphology and physiology. The lengths of the roots, petioles and leaf limbs in aeration conditions were shorter than in non-ae

Photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) from agricultural soil column leachates using zinc oxide under UV light irradiation.

The photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) from agricultural soil leachates irrigated with Cr(VI)-containing waste hydroponic solution was evaluated in this work. For this purpose, zinc oxide was used as a catalyst under UV irradiation (lambda = 365 nm). The reduction of Cr(VI) was preliminarily evaluated on synthetic solutions with a concentration of 15 mg L(-1) to optimize the catalyst loading and the solution pH and to determine the effect of organic matter. Greater removal of Cr(VI) was observed at pH 7, and the optimum catalyst loading was found to be 2 g L(-1), which achieved an 84% Cr(VI) r

Modelling sulphate-enhanced cadmium uptake by Zea mays from nutrient solution under conditions of constant free Cd2+ ion activity.

A controlled hydroponic experiment was undertaken to investigate Cd uptake in relation to the activity of Cd species in solution other than the free ion (Cd2+) by maintaining a constant Cd2+ activity under variable SO42- and Cl- concentrations exposed to maize (Zea mays var. Cameron) plants. The objectives of these experiments were: (1) to distinguish and quantify the different uptake rates of free and inorganic-complexed Cd from nutrient solution, and (2) to model the uptake of Cd by maize with a Biotic Ligand Model (BLM) in a system which facilitates the close examination of root characteris
