Lifetime Risk of Stage 3-5 CKD in a Community-Based Sample in Iceland.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Lifetime risk estimates of CKD can be used effectively in public education campaigns. This study sought to estimate lifetime risk of incident CKD stage 3 and higher in Iceland for people without CKD by the age of 45 years. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: This was a prospective cohort study with longitudinal creatinine measurements of residents in Reykjavik, Iceland, from 1967 to 2005. CKD was ascertained by two consecutive eGFR measurements <60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), development of treated kidney failure, one eGFR<60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) if the partici

Emotional experts: parents' views on end-of-life decisions for preterm infants in Iceland.

In this article, I examine how parents of infants with birth weight of 1000 grams or less in Iceland relate to the questions whether and when treatment for a preterm infant may be withdrawn, and who should make such a decision. Almost all the parents agreed there are categories of infants who should be allowed to die and parents should have a say in such a decision. Inability to take part in human communication was most commonly mentioned as a valid criterion for withdrawal of treatment. There was more disagreement about parents' right to unilaterally demand withdrawal. Ethical dilemmas and th

Epidemiology of psychotropic medication use: comparison of sales, prescriptions and survey data in Iceland.

Public health issues, medical and socio-demographics, related to use of psychotropic medications and to increasing sale of antidepressants and hypnotics need to be explored. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of antidepressants, tranquillizers and sedatives nationally and its connection with health and demographic factors, by comparing: 1) sales data and 2) prescription data for outpatients with 3) self-reported use of a random sample of the population aged 18-75 years. In 2001, the sales of psychopharmaca was 168.8 daily defined doses (DDD)/1000/day, thereof 46.6% were antidepre

Increasing rate of liver transplantation in Iceland over the last decade: a nationwide study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Liver transplantation in Iceland has historically been infrequent, with primary biliary cholangitis the leading indication during 1984-2012. We analyzed trends in the incidence, indications, etiology, and outcomes of liver transplantation in Iceland from 2013 to 2024 and compared transplant rates with other Nordic countries. METHODS: This nationwide retrospective cohort study included all Icelandic residents transplanted between January 2013 and December 2024, with adults and children analyzed separately. Indications, aetiology, and clinical outcomes were obtained from el

A population-based survey of FBN1 variants in Iceland reveals underdiagnosis of Marfan syndrome.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by aortic aneurysm, skeletal abnormalities, and lens dislocation, and is caused by variants in the FBN1 gene. To explore causes of MFS and the prevalence of the disease in Iceland we collected information from all living individuals with a clinical diagnosis of MFS in Iceland (n = 32) and performed whole-genome sequencing of those who did not have a confirmed genetic diagnosis (27/32). Moreover, to assess a potential underdiagnosis of MFS in Iceland we attempted a genotype-based approach to identify individuals with MFS. We

Reducing Intrusive Memories of Childhood Trauma Using a Visuospatial Intervention: Case Study in Iceland.

BACKGROUND: Additional interventions are needed for survivors of psychological trauma because of several barriers to and limitations of existing treatment options (eg, need to talk about the trauma in detail). Case studies are an important step in exploring the development of novel interventions, allowing detailed examination of individual responses to treatment over time. Here, we present a case study that aims to test a novel intervention designed to disrupt memory reconsolidation, taking a single-symptom approach by focusing on intrusive memories of a traumatic event. OBJECTIVE: This study

Web-based return of BRCA2 research results: one-year genetic counselling experience in Iceland.

There is an increased pressure to return results from research studies. In Iceland, deCODE Genetics has emphasised the importance of returning results to research participants, particularly the founder pathogenic BRCA2 variant; NM_000059.3:c.771_775del. To do so, they opened the website www.arfgerd.is . Individuals who received positive results via the website were offered genetic counselling (GC) at Landspitali in Reykjavik. At the end of May 2019, over 46.000 (19% of adults of Icelandic origin) had registered at the website and 352 (0.77%) received text message informing them about their pos

[MINOCA in Iceland. Acute coronary syndrome in patients with normal or nonobstructive coronary arteries].

INTRODUCTION: The classical pathophysiological process underlying acute coronary syndromes has been considered to be plaque rup-ture followed by platelet activation and aggregation and subsequent thrombus formation leading to myocardial ischemia and infarction. A substantial number of patients with acute coronary syndromes appear to have normal or near normal (<50% stenosis) coronary arteries on angiography. Recently, this clinical entity has been coined MINOCA (Myocardial Infarction with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries). The purpose of this paper is to describe the proportion of MINOCA amon

Genetics of cardiovascular diseases: lessons learned from a decade of genomics research in Iceland.

In the past 10 years, large-scale genotyping has led to discoveries of sequence variants that confer the risk of many common and complex diseases. Due to pioneering work done, in large part, at deCODE genetics in Reykjavik, discoveries from Iceland have contributed substantially to key advances in population genetics. In cardiovascular medicine, a number of discoveries have been made, uncovering sequence variants that are associated with disorders such as coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, sick sinus syndrome, peripheral vascular disease, aortic aneurysm, and ischemic stroke. Thus,

[The many faces of Actinomycosis. Results from a retrospective study in Iceland, 1984-2007].

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is a rare infection caused by Actinomyces spp. which are part of the oral, intestinal and vaginal bacterial flora. It can invade tissue through mucosal disruption and form abscesses which tend to be difficult to treat and diagnose. This population-based study explores the epidemiology and manifestations of actinomycosis in Iceland. METHODOLOGY: All diagnosed cases of actinomycosis in Iceland 1984-2007 were identified by a computerised search using ICD and SNOMED codes. Clinical information was collected by chart review. The subjects were included in the study if th

Familial risk of colon and rectal cancer in Iceland: evidence for different etiologic factors?

The aim of this study was to characterize the familial risk of colon and rectal cancer using 2 population-based registries in Iceland, the Icelandic Cancer Registry and a genealogy database. The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was used to estimate the risk among relatives of colorectal cancer index cases diagnosed in Iceland over a 46-year period (1955-2000). The 2,770 colorectal cancer patients had 23,272 first-degree relatives. Among first-degree relatives, there was an increased risk of both colon (SIR 1.47, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.34-1.62) and rectal cancer (SIR 1.24, 95% CI 1.04

Tumours in Iceland. 17. Malignant tumours of the oesophagus. Histological classification and epidemiological considerations.

We studied all primary malignancies of the oesophagus diagnosed in Iceland between 1955 and 1984 and reclassified tumours where histological material was available using the WHO classification system. Of a total of 329 tumours diagnosed in the time period, seven were excluded for various reasons. Of the remaining 322 tumours, 178 were in males and 144 in females. The age standardized incidence was 5.3/10(5) for males and 3.1/10(5) for females. The incidence of oesophageal tumours decreased for both sexes during the time period under investigation. Of 250 reclassified tumours (142 in males and

Biomechanical variables in Icelandic horse riders and the effect on tölt performance: A pilot study.

AIM: To identify how riding rein direction (left and right) and rider asymmetry affect tölt performance in Icelandic horses. METHODS: Two horses were ridden in tölt by four riders on both left and right reins. Riders wore pressure insoles that measured the total absolute force (FAbs) and absolute force difference (FDiff) in their left and right feet in the stirrups. A 3D motion-analysis system recorded the degrees of side-to-side movement in the pelvis (RollP) and in the thoracolumbar region (RollT). Lateral advanced placement (LAP) and duty factor (DF) were calculated to determine tölt perfo
