Maximizing the efficacy of interoceptive exposure by optimizing inhibitory learning: a randomized controlled trial.

Cognitive-behavioral treatments for panic disorder (PD) emphasize interoceptive exposure (IE) to target anxiety sensitivity (AS) but vary considerably in its manner of delivery. This randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of the low-dose delivery of IE exercises often prescribed in treatment protocols to an intensive form of IE hypothesized to optimize inhibitory learning. Participants (N = 120) with elevated AS were randomly assigned to one of four single-session interventions: (a) low-dose IE as prescribed in Barlow and Craske's Panic Control Treatment, (b) low-dos

Cocaine serves as a peripheral interoceptive conditioned stimulus for central glutamate and dopamine release.

Intravenous injections of cocaine HCl are habit-forming because, among their many actions, they elevate extracellular dopamine levels in the terminal fields of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system. This action, thought to be very important for cocaine's strong addiction liability, is believed to have very short latency and is assumed to reflect rapid brain entry and pharmacokinetics of the drug. However, while intravenous cocaine HCl has almost immediate effects on behavior and extracellular dopamine levels, recent evidence suggests that its central pharmacological effects are not evident unt

The potential role of the anterior insular cortex and interoception on dyspnea in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Dyspnea (the perception of breathing discomfort) can be an immensely debilitating symptom for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is not fully reflective of physiological measures of disease severity. We propose that the anterior insular cortex (AIC) and its key role in interoception (the perception of signals from within the body) are important mediators of dyspnea symptomology. Interoception encompasses respiratory motor drive, corollary discharge, sensory afferents, central neural integration, error signal generation, gating, decision processing and behavioral adapt

Under the surface: Low cardiac vagal tone and poor interoception in young adults with subclinical depressive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Depressive symptoms are associated with alterations in central and autonomic nervous system activity, including misperception of bodily activity (e.g., low interoception), somatic symptoms and decreased vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV). However, there is a lack of studies that examine both perception of bodily activity and autonomic function in depression. The present study investigated the association between interoception, vmHRV, and subclinical depressive symptoms. METHOD: Eighty-eight students were enrolled and vmHRV was calculated from a 5-minute resting elec

Sleep Quality and Interoception Are Associated with Generalized Anxiety in Baccalaureate Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Baccalaureate nursing students are at increased risk for anxiety and related mood disorders. We conducted a cross-sectional study to explore the relationships among anxiety symptoms measured by the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) questionnaire and lifestyle behaviors including habitual diet, sleep quality (Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]), and physical activity. Descriptive statistics were obtained for sample characteristics, and Pearson correlations and backward stepwise linear regression explored relationships between the GAD-7 scores, the Multidimensional Assessment of Interocepti

Using bodily postures in the treatment of anorexia nervosa: Effects of power posing on interoception and affective states.

OBJECTIVE: Power posing involves the adoption of an expansive bodily posture. This study examined whether power posing could benefit individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and women with normal weight in regards to interoceptive ability and affective states. METHOD: Participants included 50 inpatients and outpatients with AN as well as 51 normal-weight women. Interoceptive accuracy (IAcc), measured by the heartbeat tracking task and interoceptive sensibility (IS), measured by confidence ratings, were assessed at baseline, after a single power posing session and after 1 week of daily training.

From the body's viscera to the body's image: Is there a link between interoception and body image concerns?

Interoception, the sense of the physiological condition of the body originating from within its internal organs, and body image, namely the perception, feelings and attitudes one has about one's body, are two fundamental components of our sense of personal identity and overall well-being. However, the relation between interoception and body image remains poorly understood. We here review recent behavioural and neuroimaging evidence from non-clinical and clinical populations (e.g. eating disorders) to propose that basic interoceptive processes and interoceptive awareness may crucially contribut

Relationship between self-perceptions of ageing and interoception among older people living with HIV: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Older people living with HIV (PLWH) commonly experience accelerated ageing; however, their subjective experiences of ageing vary substantially among individuals. Self-perceptions of ageing (SPA) is an important psychological factor influencing physical and mental health in older adults, while interoception reflects the ability to perceive and interpret internal bodily signals. To date, the latent heterogeneity of SPA and its relationship with interoception among older PLWH remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to identify latent profiles of SPA, examine associated factors, an

Is Interoception Deficit Linking Alexithymia and Eating Spectrum Symptoms? Study on a Non-Clinical Sample of Young Adults.

We investigated if interoceptive deficits could be the link between alexithymic traits and eating spectrum manifestations in a non-clinical sample. One-hundred sixty-one young adults (mean age: 23.2 ± 2.4 years) were evaluated with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), the Interoceptive Accuracy Scale (IAS), the Interoceptive Confusion Questionnaire (ICQ), and the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26). Questionnaires were administered with an online procedure (Microsoft Form, Office 365 A1, Pisa, Italy) (Study Protocol #0012005/2023). We compared ICQ, IAS, and TAS-20 scores in subjects who me

Neurophysiological mechanisms underlying interoceptive hypersensitivity in somatic symptom disorder: a mediation analysis of alexithymia.

BACKGROUND: Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) is defined by distressing physical symptoms and exaggerated psychological responses, and interoceptive hypersensitivity is widely regarded as a central feature, but the neuro-psychological pathway from neural interoceptive processing to clinical symptoms is not well elucidated. Hence, the present study sought to investigate the neurophysiological basis of interoceptive hypersensitivity in SSD and the mediating role of alexithymia. METHODS: Fifty-two medication-naive patients with SSD and 52 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) underwent clinica

Physical activity intensities and depression in colorectal cancer: interoceptive accuracy as a mediator and mindfulness as a moderator.

PURPOSE: Depression is prevalent among colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors. Although various physical activity intensities are differentially associated with depressive symptoms, the underlying mediator and moderator involving interoception and mindfulness, remain unclear. This study aims to examine whether interoceptive accuracy differentially mediates the relationship between various physical activity intensities and depressive symptoms and whether mindfulness moderates these pathways. METHODS: In this multicenter cross-sectional study, 395 CRC survivors completed validated questionnaires ass

Interoceptive Information of Physical Vigor Through Circulating Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1.

The brain relies on interoceptive feedback signals to regulate bodily functions. Female mice with low serum IGF-1 levels (LID mice) exhibit reduced spontaneous running compared to control females, an effect not seen in males. Reduced activity normalized after sustained systemic IGF-1 treatment. This observation led us to hypothesize that circulating IGF-1-a key regulator of skeletal muscle and bone mass that crosses the blood-brain barrier during physical activity-may convey body vigor information to the brain. Since hypothalamic orexin neurons, which are involved in regulating physical activi

Better safe than sorry: Avoidance of interoceptive threat following observational fear learning.

Learning through observation is often adaptive, allowing individuals to acquire important threat-related information without exposing themselves to danger. However, it can become maladaptive when it leads to excessive fear or avoidance in the absence of actual threat. This study examined whether observational learning of an interoceptive threat promotes avoidance behavior and how conditioned responding changes when avoidance is prevented. Forty healthy participants completed a three-phase observational fear conditioning paradigm. In the observational learning phase, participants watched a demo

Rethinking dyspnea in pulmonary rehabilitation: from respiratory load and interoceptive processing to biofeedback and neurofeedback.

Dyspnea in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often treated as the perceptual consequence of altered airflow, lung volume, gas exchange, or work of breathing. Yet breathlessness is not a unitary symptom or a direct readout of pulmonary dysfunction. It comprises at least three partially dissociable sensations-air hunger, breathing effort, and chest tightness-with distinct physiological triggers and affective salience. Current models suggest that conscious breathlessness emerges from the interaction of respiratory motor drive, corollary discharge, sensory afferent feedback, central

Attending to body and mind: Does interoceptive attention compete with controlled and negative automatic thoughts?

Interoceptive attention refers to how an individual typically allocates their attentional resources to physiological signals. We do not, however, fully understand how interoceptive attention relates with other forms of internally focused attention, such as attention to internal thoughts (e.g., mind-wandering, reflection, worry), and whether these factors compete for limited attentional resources at the trait and state level. Across two studies (n = 222, n = 109; years data collected: 2021-2022, 2023-2024; from a U.K.-based predominantly undergraduate population), we isolated two components fro

Sensory integration combined with interoceptive interventions for functional urinary incontinence in children: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Functional urinary incontinence is prevalent among children and affects their daily life, psychology, and behavior. Although some behavioral therapies have been reported before, there is still no consensus on the treatment plan for functional urinary incontinence in children. CASE INFORMATION: This case describes an 8-year-old girl presenting with urgency, urine leakage and frequent nocturnal enuresis. An 8-week sensory integration therapy combined with interoceptive training was implemented, followed by follow-up visits at 4 and 8 weeks after the intervention. Her urinary urgency

When the interoceptive and conceptual clash: The case of oppositional phenomenal self-modelling in Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) has been associated with a rich set of symptoms that are said to be uncomfortable, unwilled, and effortful to manage. Furthermore, tics, the canonical characteristic of TS, are multifaceted, and their onset and maintenance is complex. A formal account that integrates these features of TS symptomatology within a plausible theoretical framework is currently absent from the field. In this paper, we assess the explanatory power of hierarchical generative modelling in accounting for TS symptomatology from the perspective of active inference. We propose a fourfold analysis of

Generalization of a positive-feature interoceptive morphine occasion setter across the rat estrous cycle.

INTRODUCTION: Interoceptive stimuli elicited by drug administration acquire conditioned modulatory properties of the induction of conditioned appetitive behaviours by exteroceptive cues. This effect may be modeled using a drug discrimination task in which the drug stimulus is trained as a positive-feature (FP) occasion setter (OS) that disambiguates the relation between an exteroceptive light conditioned stimulus (CS) and a sucrose unconditioned stimulus (US). We previously reported that females are less sensitive to generalization of a FP morphine OS than males, so we investigated the role of
