OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric treatment research has too frequently neglected anger. "Anger management" is widely used to tamp anger down. Yet understanding and expressing anger often have clinical and interpersonal value. Few data address anger in the context of treating patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The authors hypothesized the clinical utility of anger expression rather than suppression, particularly using interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), which focuses on interpersonal handling of emotions. IPT effects on anger have barely been researched.
METHODS: Secondary data analyses

In this case study we present the course of the psychotherapy of Myriam, a 19-year old female with a severe personality disorder and comorbid eating disorder. During the initial assessment she reported high levels of neuroticism that parallel the diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and anorexia nervosa. Myriam showed a severely impaired personality functioning defined by perfectionism, self-criticism, interpersonal guilt and overcontrol. Her daily experience was shaped by a self-recriminative inner dialogue associated with maladaptive patter

As treatment outcome in depression varies widely, it is important to understand better the predictive value of particular patient characteristics. However, qualitative systematic reviews of the association between easily identifiable patient characteristics and outcome for commonly used treatment options have been unavailable. This article provides an overview of the consistency of findings on the association between sociodemographic factors and depression characteristics, on the one hand, and outcomes of pharmacotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and interpersonal/psychodynamic psychother

We assessed therapist adherence to interpersonal therapy (IPT) and supportive therapy (ST) in a controlled trial for social anxiety disorder. Raters blindly scored n = 133 videotapes from 53 participants using the Collaborative Study Psychotherapy Rating Scale (CSPRS). Results reveal statistical differences across groups, but higher than expected overlap. Greater use of IPT in beginning sessions predicted better outcome in both therapies. Suboptimal adherence may be due to the crossed design in which the same therapists delivered both IPT and ST. Since switching between different approaches is

Nonepileptic events (NEEs) occur with and without true seizure disorders and vary greatly in clinical presentation. They are often associated with significant psychopathology. This paper proposes six categories of NEE patients based on psychosocial history, NEE etiology, and mechanisms of and response to psychotherapy. A series of 26 adult NEE patients were grouped according to six symptom patterns: (a) acute anxiety/panic, (b) impaired affect regulation and interpersonal skills, (c) somatization/conversion, (d) depression, (e) posttraumatic stress disorder, and (f) reinforced behavior pattern

Relational cultural theory identifies relational connection as central to healing. Relational cultural theory's tenets-authenticity, zest, mutuality, and collaboration-engender healing through promoting clients' relational connection with the self, the clinician, and other people. Understanding the individual, familial, community, and sociocultural contexts in which clients are located allows for deliberately incorporating political processes into therapy. Though there are similarities and differences between CBT and relational cultural therapy, recent progress builds on past work that identif

This review compiles 48 empirical studies and 55 clinical/practice articles specific to group therapy with sex offenders. Historically, group therapy has always been the predominant modality in sex offender-specific treatment. In the first decades of the field, treatment applied a psychoanalytic methodology that, although not empirically supported, fully appreciated the primary therapeutic importance of the group modality. Conversely, since the early 1980s, treatment has applied a cognitive behavioral method, but the field has largely neglected the therapeutic value of interpersonal group dyna

Depression is a highly prevalent disorder that causes much personal distress and difficulties in functioning at home and in the workplace. In the workplace, as elsewhere, depression can manifest as a variation in normal mood, as a symptom, as a disorder, or as a disease. Occupational health professionals are more concerned with clinical depression, a term used to signify any type of depression that causes significant personal distress and/or problems in functioning. Clinical depression is manifest in the workplace and adversely affects the employee's work satisfaction and performance. For most

BACKGROUND: In Chile demand for specialist care following exposure to interpersonal violence (IPV) in youth far exceeds capacity. Group interventions may improve access to care for youth.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of two low-intensity group interventions: Trama Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT); Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT); and treatment as usual, Art therapy-based support (ATBS). Outcomes measured were post-traumatic stress symptoms, depression, interpersonal functioning and affect regulation.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 67

OBJECTIVE: To test potential cognitive and interpersonal moderators of two evidence-based youth depression prevention programs.
METHOD: Two hundred four adolescents (Mage = 14.62 years, SD = 1.65; 56% female; 71% White, 11% Black, 11% multiracial, 5% Asian, 2% other races, 18% Hispanic/Latinx) were randomized to either a cognitive-behavioral (Coping With Stress [CWS]) or interpersonal (Interpersonal Psychotherapy-Adolescent Skills Training [IPT-AST]) prevention program. Potential moderators, selected based on theory and research, included rumination, negative cognitive style, dysfunctional at

This study is a pilot randomized controlled trial that examined the efficacy of a body-oriented group therapy designed to address chronic fear states in the body due to complex trauma. The Trauma and the Body Group (TBG) is a 20-session group psychotherapy that draws upon the principles and techniques of sensorimotor psychotherapy. Thirty-two women with a history of childhood trauma were randomized to immediate treatment or a waitlist control condition. Assessments were conducted one month prior to treatment, immediately after treatment, and six months post-treatment. Significant improvements

The Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM Task Force, 2006) is based on the assumption that an in-depth understanding of clients' underlying emotional, personality, and interpersonal patterns will facilitate their treatment. In this article I show how such an understanding can be achieved through multimethod psychological assessment, and how useful such information can be in long-term psychotherapy with high-achieving, successful clients who struggle with forming and maintaining intimate relationships. Such treatments are extremely difficult, because when these clients attach to their psychothe

This study describes an evaluation of the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy provided in an outpatient community mental health clinic. The study used a single group pretest-posttest design involving 78 clients. Clinical outcomes included overall psychosocial functioning and quality of life, level of subjective distress, interpersonal functioning and role functioning, measured by the Outcome Questionnaire (Lambert, Hansen, Umpress, Lunnen Okilshi, & Burlingame, 2000). Clients showed statistically significant improvement from pretest (first sessions) to completion of treatment in overa

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) may be overlooked when the therapist does not occupy the role of primary attachment object. In such cases, characteristic borderline dynamics emerge chiefly in external relationships rather than within psychotherapy, leading clinicians to underestimate the disorder. Drawing on Gunderson's original ego psychology-object relations model, this paper argues that BPD is fundamentally organised around relationships with emotionally significant others. Diagnostic formulations that rely heavily on transference dynamics may therefore miss BPD in seemingly organised

Comments on the article by S. Sauer-Zavala et al. (see record 2022-23735-001). Since its empirical debut in the early 1990s, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has amassed substantial support for treating individuals struggling with chronic suicidality, emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, and interpersonal distress. Today, it is known to be one of the most effective psychotherapies for complex mental health presentations, such as in borderline personality disorder (BPD). In this comment, the authors highlight strengths and limitations of one promising intervention, BPD Compass, as presented by

Depression is one of the most common and debilitating psychiatric disorders and is a leading cause of suicide. Most people who become depressed will have multiple episodes, and some depressions are chronic. Persons with bipolar disorder will also have manic or hypomanic episodes. Given the recurrent nature of the disorder, it is important not just to treat the acute episode, but also to protect against its return and the onset of subsequent episodes. Several types of interventions have been shown to be efficacious in treating depression. The antidepressant medications are relatively safe and w

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Clinical considerations for evidence-based treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD) are outlined in the context of the best available evidence, discussed with reference to BPD traits currently identified in the upcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - 5 (DSM-5) revision. The DSM-5 will highlight refractory affective, interpersonal, and identity symptoms in BPD as potential treatment targets. In addition to providing a framework for clinical decision-making, future research strategies will also focus on neurotransmitter systems of greater rel

Dance Movement Therapy is gradually becoming recognized as a treatment option in Mental Health Care. However, the working mechanisms can be difficult to comprehend without experiential knowledge of this therapy form. This article aims to offer insight into the clinical application of Dance Movement Therapy for Sanne, a woman with a history of interpersonal relationship difficulties, problems with self-regulation, low self-efficacy and diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and co-morbid Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This case illustration describes treatment interventions dur

Authors included in this issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychology: In-Session come from diverse theoretical orientations but discuss methods of case conceptualization that share these assumptions: (1) that interpersonal patterns are salient to a good understanding of patient personality and problems and (2) that an individual formulation is helpful in responsively tailoring in-session processes to meet therapeutic goals. We believe these assumptions resonate with many practitioners working across settings, levels of severity, and theoretical orientations. Each author offers an overview of t

We all long for relationships with others, because only in connecting with others can we develop our intrapsychic structure and become functional adults. We are psychologically predisposed to have a constant connection with others and are driven toward relationships with others. Our deepest yearnings are therefore devoted to building solid dialogue as the means of becoming fully human. We, therefore, consciously or unconsciously, long for a relationship where we can experience happiness, satisfaction and, above all, redemption or salvation from our dreads, miseries and unhappiness.
