Anti-CD 20 monoclonal antibody (rituximab) treatment for inflammatory ocular diseases.

Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody directed against the CD20 antigen expressed on B cells and widely used in the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and rheumatoid arthritis. There is a growing amount of literature which suggests that rituximab may be useful for inflammatory ocular diseases and intraocular lymphoma. Few cases have been reported on treatment of refractory scleritis, peripherative ulcerative keratitis, uveitis and ocular surface inflammatory disorders. Rituximab may be effective in the treatment of ocular inflammatory diseases in particular the most aggressive, recalcitrant and

Frozen section diagnosis in ophthalmic pathology.

Frozen section diagnosis is extensively used in various branches of pathology, but its application in ophthalmic pathology was recognised only in the 1970s. We studied 10 sections of ocular and adenexal lesions by frozen section diagnosis, which included orbital lesions (4 cases), lid lesions (3 cases), and intraocular tissue (1 case). The time taken for processing ranged between 10 to 15 minutes. Diagnoses based on frozen section evaluation included lymphoma, mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, solar keratosis, compound naevus, silicone oil globules in cataractous lens, neurofibromatosis, pseudotumou

To What Extent Can Orbital Cellulitis Emergency Aspect Influence the Diagnosis of Maxillary Sinus Lymphoma?

We present a case of a 46-year-old woman admitted to the emergency department for acute swelling and erythema of the right eyelid for 3 days. Ophthalmological examination was notable for 10/10, P2 best visual acuity, and inflammatory periorbital edema, without exophthalmia nor extraocular motility disturbance. Intraocular pressure was 14 mmHg and fundoscopic examination was not notable for any abnormality. Preseptal cellulitis diagnosis was made, and oral antibiotherapy was immediately started; after 72 hours, the patient did not improve and started complaining of pain on ocular movements. Bra

APRIL and BAFF play a key role in differentiating vitreoretinal lymphoma from uveitis.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) is critical for the successful treatment of this rare intraocular malignancy. However, fast and reliable diagnosis of VRL in patients presenting with intermediate or posterior non-infectious uveitis remains a challenge. A proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL) and B-cell activating factor (BAFF) are vital factors in the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prognosis of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) and systemic autoimmune diseases. However, their utility as biomarkers for the diagnosis of VRL and uveitis remains unclear.

Characterizing second line and beyond therapies for primary central nervous system lymphomas.

Primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare and aggressive lymphoma that affects the CNS without other systemic involvement. High-dose methotrexate (HDMTX)-based regimens are recommended frontline treatment, followed by consolidation with either high-dose chemotherapy, whole brain radiation (WBRT) +/- sequential temozolomide (TMZ), or autologous stem cell transplant (autoSCT). Despite advancements with HDMTX and rituximab, up to half of patients will relapse. Treatment for relapsed or refractory (R/R) disease varies widely as preferred regimens are not well-established. [Malignant and non-malignant uveitis-masquerade syndromes in childhood].

Diseases that can clinically simulate an uveitis are summarised under the name Masquerade syndromes. They constitute a heterogenous group of malignant and non-malignant entities that must be excluded in the differential diagnosis. Of the malignant diseases lymphomas are only rarely observed as the cause of a pseudo-uveitis, whereas especially leukaemic diseases and, in childhood, retinoblastomas and the extremely rare intraocular medulloepithelioma must be excluded. Of the non-malignant diseases in childhood, besides Coats' disease, a juvenile xanthogranuloma as well as persisting hyperplastic

Multiple presentations: a single pathology, primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). A multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is an uncommon extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma confined to the brain, spinal cord, leptomeninges, and eyes. Despite its characteristic histology, its neuroimaging appearance is remarkably heterogeneous and often mimics other brain tumors or inflammatory diseases. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with PCNSL by members of the Mexican Neuro-Oncology Group. Only cases with histopathological confirmation and pre-treatment contrast-enhanced MRI were included. Lesions were classified according to radiologi

[Case of 55-year-old female with primary central nervous system lymphoma, presenting with brain and eye lesions and long-term relapsing/remitting course].

We report the case of a 55-year-old immunocompetent female with primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). Seven years previously, the patient presented with left facial dysesthesia, and a right thalamus lesion was revealed by brain MRI. Both her dysesthesia and the lesion disappeared spontaneously in six months. One year previously, she noted motor disturbance of the right limbs, and brain MRI revealed lesions in the bilateral basal ganglia and the left internal capsule which gradually increased in size. She was admitted to our hospital owing to the brain MRI findings of a white matter
