BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the most commonly reported musculoskeletal disorder among farmers. There is limited research regarding LBP among farmers in Ireland.
AIMS: To explore attributed causes of LBP, investigate the relationship between LBP and personal and work-related factors and measure the impact of LBP.
METHODS: A questionnaire survey of Irish farmers was conducted on farmers from each of the main farm enterprise systems in Ireland. Data were analysed using chi-square tests, t-tests, Mann-Whitney tests and logistic regression models.

OBJECTIVE: To document the adult adjustment of survivors of childhood institutional abuse.
METHOD: Two hundred and forty-seven adult survivors of institutional abuse with a mean age of 60 were interviewed with a protocol that included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, modules from the Structured Clinical Interview for Axis I Disorders of DSM IV and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM IV Personality Disorders, the Trauma Symptom Inventory, and the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory.

Cryptosporidium species are protozoan parasites associated with gastro-intestinal illness. Following a number of high profile outbreaks worldwide, it has emerged as a parasite of major public health concern. The Mental Treatment Act 1945 had a decisive influence on the provision and development of psychiatric services in Ireland. This paper examines: (a) the historical and psychiatric backgrounds to the introduction of the Mental Treatment Act 1945; (b) the main provisions of the Act; and (c) the international context of the Act, especially in relation to institutional and legislative trends in other jurisdictions.

AIMS: To estimate the annual incidence of hospitalisations due to severe complications of varicella, describe the complications and estimate annual mortality.
METHODS: Active surveillance throughout the UK and Ireland for 13 months by paediatricians notifying cases to the British Paediatric Surveillance Unit and completing a questionnaire. Natural Cryptosporidium infections in pigs are widespread but generally apathogenic. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of zoonotic Cryptosporidium spp. in piggeries in Ireland, where the drinking water supply is particularly vulnerable to contamination with zoonotic species. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of drug positivity among drivers suspected of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, and consequently apprehended by the police in Ireland.
DESIGN: 2000 specimens were selected for drug analysis, 1000 with results under the limit for alcohol and 1000 over the limit. The limit for alcohol is 80 mg/100 ml in blood and 107 mg/100 ml in urine. Seven drugs/drug classes were examined; amphetamines, methamphetamines, benzodiazapines, cannabinoids, cocaine, opiates and methadone.

Twenty-one patients have been diagnosed with glutaric aciduria type I over a 16-year period in the Republic of Ireland, 11 following clinical presentation and 10 following a high-risk screen. Nineteen have been managed with diet. Eight patients have died, of whom 7 were diagnosed clinically. Six had dystonic and one spastic cerebral palsy. Divisions and strife between the opposing loyalist and republican communities, and between the communities and the security forces, have led to thousands of deaths and injuries. Between January 1999 and June 2002, 646 invasive isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae were collected in Ireland. MICs of penicillin, ciprofloxacin, cefotaxime, moxifloxacin and linezolid were determined by Etest methodology. In March 1999 armed conflict broke out in Kosova and about 900,000 ethnic Albanians were displaced. We reviewed the health care offered to the 945 Kosovan refugees who arrived in Ireland in 1999, which included screening for tuberculosis (TB) and hepatitis B.
