Hormonal and reproductive factors and reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer.

Females differ from males in incidence and clinical characteristics of colorectal cancer. Understanding the differences can lead to development of preventive approaches. To identify reproductive factors currently associated with the risk of colorectal cancer. Consecutively diagnosed female colorectal cancer cases and randomly chosen colorectal cancer-free controls matched on age/ethnicity/primary care clinic within the molecular epidemiology of colorectal cancer study, a population-based case-control study in Northern Israel, were included. A total of 2867 female cases and 2333 controls partic

Changing epidemiology of invasive Streptococcus pyogenes infections in southern Israel: differences between two ethnic population groups.

BACKGROUND: Two ethnic populations (westernized Jews and Bedouins in transition from semi-nomadic to sedentary life conditions) living in Southern Israel and receiving inpatient services in the only medical facility of the region. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the incidence and severity of Streptococcus pyogenes infections among Jewish and Bedouin children have changed over the years. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective (1980 to 1994), population-based. Medical charts of children younger than 15 years of age hospitalized with S. pyogenes bacteremia and/or severe invasive infection were reviewed. I

Lamentations by a Jewish poet on his skin affliction: Solomon Ibn Gabirol.

Solomon Ibn Gabirol was a highly respected medieval Jewish poet and philosopher who lived in Spain. He suffered from a distressing, chronic cutaneous disorder of unknown etiology, which he poetically portrays in his poetry by using fantastic and grotesque imagery derived from Biblical sources. This contribution provides examples of Ibn Gabirol's remarkable poetry, which spotlights the immense human suffering and misery that can result from skin diseases.

Outcome of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for severe combined immunodeficiency and impact of newborn screening on overall survival: A single referral center study.

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative treatment for infants with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). Different factors determine HSCT success and overall survival (OS). Specifically, prompt diagnosis of SCID, preferably through newborn screening (NBS), is critical. OBJECTIVE: We explored variable factors including the impact of NBS that are associated with HSCT outcomes and OS in a multiethnic SCID cohort. METHODS: One hundred patients with SCID diagnosed and treated with HSCT at Sheba Medical Center in Israel between 1996 and 2024 were studied. RESUL

Prevalence of breast and colorectal cancer in Ashkenazi Jewish carriers of Fanconi anemia and Bloom syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fanconi anemia complementation group C and Bloom syndrome, rare autosomal recessive disorders marked by chromosome instability, are especially prevalent in the Ashkenazi* Jewish community. A single predominant mutation for each has been reported in Ahshkenazi Jews: c.711+4A-->T (IVS4 +4 A-->T) in FACC and BLM(Ash) in Bloom syndrome. Individuals affected by either of these syndromes are characterized by susceptibility for developing malignancies, and we questioned whether heterozygote carriers have a similarly increased risk. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the cancer rate among FACC and B

Mitochondrial myopathy, parkinsonism, and multiple mtDNA deletions in a Sephardic Jewish family.

The authors describe a family of Sephardic Jews with progressive external ophthalmoparesis, skeletal muscle weakness, and parkinsonism. Autosomal recessive inheritance was suggested by many consanguineous marriages, although a dominant disorder could not be excluded. No linkage to known progressive external ophthalmoparesis locus was found. The presence of cytochrome c oxidase-negative ragged-red fibers, biochemically reduced respiratory chain complexes, and multiple mitochondrial DNA deletions in muscle biopsies from four patients suggested a new mitochondrial disorder of intergenomic communi

High incidence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in North African immigrants to France.

During the 15-year period 1968-1982, 328 French residents died of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD); 273 had been born in France (annual mortality rate of 0.38 per million inhabitants). Of the 55 foreign-born cases, 12 came from Tunisia and 11 from Algeria (mortality rates of 4.53 and 0.95 per million). Nearly all of the Tunisians were Jews, and six belonged to two families. These findings complement earlier observations on Libyan-born Israelis, but still do not discriminate between genetic or environmental causal factors, which will require epidemiologic investigation of CJD in North Africa.

[Did Heinrich Heine have syphilis?].

Though Heinrich Heine died 150 years ago, the underlying illness responsible for his lengthy suffering has never been fully clarified. The diagnosis most frequently put forward is that of syphilis. However, when the available source material and its interpretation in the context of the contemporary nosology of syphilis is considered, this diagnosis is called into question. The fact that the German Jew Heinrich Heine was diagnosed with syphilis can at best be explained by the cliché of the "Jewish venereal disease." The ultimate cause of Heine's death, however, can be best explained by his long

Familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Chile is associated with the codon 200 mutation of the PRNP amyloid precursor gene on chromosome 20.

We have found the codon 200Lys mutation in 6 Chilean CJD families, including a family in the rural case cluster in Chillán. Thus, all 3 of the known clusters of CJD, in Slovakia, Libyan-born Israeli Jews, and Chile, are linked to the presence of the same mutation. The phenotypic features of the disease in these families are similar to those reported for other clustered or individual families elsewhere in the world. The heterogeneous genetic composition of the Chilean population interpreted in light of historical migration patterns suggests that the mutation may have entered Chile by Jewish emi

Two brothers with Martsolf's syndrome.

Two brothers affected by a syndrome consisting of short stature, hypogonadism, and severe mental retardation are reported. The syndrome shares the features of that described by Martsolf et al in two brothers born to a consanguineous Polish Jewish couple. Although our patients' parents are Sephardic Jews, they deny consanguinity. These observations and personal knowledge of another affected Jewish boy raise the question of whether Martsolf's syndrome is a new entity that should be included in the group of those that affect mainly Jewish people, and whether its pattern of inheritance is X linked

Clinical and virological observations in childhood Hodgkin's disease in Israel.

Antibody levels to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) were determined in children with Hodgkin's disease (HD) before therapy, as well as in healthy, age-matched controls. Included were 21 Israeli-born children, aged 2.5 to 14.5 years: 13 Jews whose parents were of African-Asian origin, 1 Jew whose parents were of European origin, and 7 Arabs. Most of them were from large families (average 5.5 children per family) and low socioeconomic class. Antibody levels were not statistically different between patient and control gro

Iron deficiency anemia among infants: a retrospective cohort study.

Postnatal iron deficiency, especially from ages 6 to 24 months, has long-term consequences lasting into adolescence and adulthood. We aimed to characterize iron deficiency anemia among infants from one central Israeli district by demographic and laboratory parameters. A retrospective chart review was performed on all infants from a single district who had undergone a complete blood count as part of a routine survey for iron deficiency anemia during 2010-2021. Data retrieved included hemoglobin levels, mean corpuscular volume, and demographic features: sex, sector (non-ultraorthodox Jew, ultrao

Ataxia telangiectasia-mutated rs56009889 and risk of common cancers.

A polymorphic variant in the ataxia telangiectasia-mutated ( ATM ) gene, rs56009889, was recently associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. We studied the role of this variant in the etiology of other cancers. Data from three population-based case-control studies of colon, breast, and lung cancer were used. Participants in these studies (4517 cases, 3383 controls) underwent a genome-wide association study using 500K Illumina OncoArray. The frequency of the AG/AA genotypes differed between Ashkenazi (4.6%) and Sephardi (0.2%) Jews ( P  < 0.001). AG/AA frequency was significantly higher

Familial dysautonomia.

Familial dysautonomia (FD) is an autosomal recessive hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy (HSAN, type 3) expressed at birth with profound sensory loss and early death. The FD founder mutation in the ELP1 gene arose within the Ashkenazi Jews in the sixteenth century and is present in 1:30 Jews of European ancestry. The mutation yield a tissue-specific skipping of exon 20 and a loss of function of the elongator-1 protein (ELP1), which is essential for the development and survival of neurons. Patients with FD produce variable amounts of ELP1 in different tissues, with the brain producing m

Hypoparathyroidism and central diabetes insipidus: in search of the link.

UNLABELLED: Two siblings (a 15-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl) who presented with hypocalcemic seizure at the age of 2 years and 2 months (boy) and 2 years and 4 months (girl) were diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism. At the age of 3 years, the girl developed central diabetes insipidus with good response to desmopressin acetate treatment. The family history was unremarkable, and there was no consanguinity between the parents. The father is of Iraqi/Egyptian Jewish origin and the mother is of Iranian/Romanian Jewish origin. Sequence analysis of the candidate genes for isolated hypoparathyro

Major histocompatibility complex haplotype studies in Ashkenazi Jewish patients with pemphigus vulgaris.

Of 26 Ashkenazi Jewish patients with pemphigus vulgaris, 24 (92.3%) carried the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II alleles HLA-DR4, DQw3, of which all were of the subtype DR4, DQw8. From studies of the patients and their families, haplotypes were defined. It was found that, of the patients who carried HLA-DR4, DQw8, 75% carried one or the other (and in one case, both) of two haplotypes [HLA-B38, SC21, DR4] or HLA-B35, SC31, DR4. The former is a known extended haplotype among normal Jews, with a frequency of 0.102, and the latter may also be an extended haplotype in this ethnic gro

Ethnic Disparities in the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Israel and Impact on Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: In this nationwide study, we aimed to explore healthcare services utilization, medical management, and disease outcomes of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) across the 2 major ethnic groups in Israel. METHODS: We utilized a cohort including all patients diagnosed with IBD in Israel since 2005. The primary outcome was steroid dependency, with secondary outcomes including use of biologics, time to surgery, and hospitalizations. Outcomes were controlled for possible inherent differences in disease course and phenotype. RESULTS: Of the 32 491 included patients, 18 252 (56%) had Crohn

Prevalence and determinants of serological evidence of atrophic gastritis among Arab and Jewish residents of Jerusalem: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the correlates of premalignant gastric lesions is essential for gastric cancer prevention. We examined the prevalence and correlates of serological evidence of atrophic gastritis, a premalignant gastric condition, using serum pepsinogens (PGs) in two populations with differing trends in gastric cancer incidence. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, using ELISA we measured serum PGI and PGII concentrations (Biohit, Finland), Helicobacter pylori serum IgG and cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) antigen IgG antibodies in archived sera of 692 Jews and 952 Arabs aged 25-78

Anti-thyroid antibodies, parietal cell antibodies and tissue transglutaminase antibodies in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease.

INTRODUCTION: The co-existence of tissue-specific autoantibodies in autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) is well established. The published prevalence of anti-parietal cell antibodies (PC-Ab) is 20-25%, and that of celiac antibodies is 2-5%. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of PC-Ab and anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG-Ab) in patients with ATD and to evaluate the correlation between anti-thyroid antibodies and the other antibodies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The files of 120 Israeli Jews and Arabs with ATD were evaluated for anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (Tg-Ab), anti
