The impact of circularity and circular strategies on firm employment.

In the past, research on a circular economy often focused on economic and ecological sustainability, while research on the social side of circularity has stepped up recently. The circular economy is often framed as a way to not only foster competitiveness and resource security, but also create opportunities to boost employment and provide high-quality, local jobs. This study aims to be the first to empirically interrogate this labor-enhancing assumption by using advanced Natural Language Processing in a unique combination with cross-sectional regression analysis for all private companies in Be

Labor market entry prospects of people with visual impairments: evidence from administrative register data in the Netherlands.

The UN's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities includes a right to equal work opportunities. People with visual impairments (VI) are targeted by this convention and experience low employment rates. The initial transition from education to labor is a predictor for later labor market participation. Exploiting administrative register data, we identified a graduated subpopulation with VI and matched them to a control group. This paper evaluates (1) group differences in various socio-economic outcomes following graduation, and (2) following initial employment. Following graduation t

Creating the most frightening company on earth. An interview with Andy Law of St. Luke's. Interview by Diane L. Coutu.

Though only five years old, employee-owned St. Luke's Communications has become one of the most talked about advertising agencies in the United Kingdom, winning numerous awards--though it doesn't enter contests--and increasing its profits eightfold. Chairman and cofounder Andy Law attributes the firm's success to its determination to continuously reinvent itself in a world populated by dot-coms and mega-ad agencies. St Luke's intends to revolutionize the way business is done and provide a credible alternative to the capitalism of both the old economy and the new. To that end, it pushes its peo

Push or Pull: Changes in the Relative Risk and Growth of Entrepreneurship Among Older Households.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Amid insufficient retirement savings and the growing need to work longer, it is important to understand why self-employment, especially entrepreneurship, has grown among older households. Older households may have been pushed into entrepreneurship by the growing risks of wage-and-salary employment as wages and jobs have become less stable. Alternatively, older households may have been pulled into entrepreneurship as the associated risks have declined, for instance, due to greater opportunities to diversify income away from risky business income. We examine the economic ca

Economic impacts of supported employment for persons with severe mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Most persons with severe mental illness prefer competitive to sheltered vocational settings. Supported employment (SE) has become a clearly defined model for helping people with severe mental illness to find and maintain competitive jobs. It involves individualized and rapid placement, ongoing support and assessment, and integration of vocational and mental health staff within a single clinical team. Previous studies show that SE secures competitive employment much more effectively than do other approaches. This review focuses on its economic impacts. METHODS: Studies reporting so

'Essential and undervalued: health disparities of African American women in the COVID-19 era'.

OBJECTIVES: Transforming the landscape of American healthcare, COVID-19 has had unprecedented effects on the African American community. African Americans are more likely to contract COVID-19, develop complications and die from the virus. Amid the growing research on COVID-19, this manuscript pays particular attention to African American women who are disproportionately represented as 'essential' or frontline workers, yet often lack job security and risk contagion. Faced with limited testing centers, they are also at risk of having their symptoms minimized or dismissed by medical practitioners

Long-term sickness absence due to mental disorders is associated with individual features and psychosocial work conditions.

AIMS: Sickness absence is a socioeconomic global burden. In Brazil, mental disorders are the third leading cause of social security benefits payments. The aim of the present study was to compare factors associated with long-term sickness absence between workers who claimed social benefits due to mental disorders or by other causes. We investigated individual features and occupational characteristics. In addition, we evaluated psychosocial factors at work assessed by the Demand-Control-Support (DCS) and Effort-Reward Imbalance (ERI) models, and whether they were associated with long-term sickne

Social participation of patients with epidermolysis bullosa: barriers and facilitators in education, employment, and economic life - a biographic interview study.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a rare, inherited skin disorder characterized by skin fragility, leading to painful blisters and wounds. While protective measures are essential for managing EB, they can inadvertently restrict physical activity and social participation. Recognizing this dilemma, the current psychosocial care guidelines for EB emphasize the need to support social participation as a key priority. Accordingly, this study explores barriers and facilitators influencing participation in education, employment, and economic life, as conceptualized by the International Classif

Prevalence and Impact of Violence Against Healthcare Workers in Brazilian Emergency Departments: A National Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace violence (WPV) is a significant occupational hazard in healthcare, with emergency departments (EDs) recognized as high-risk environments. Although globally significant, data from Latin America remain scarce. In this study we aimed to evaluate the prevalence and effects of WPV on healthcare workers in Brazilian EDs. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of healthcare workers in Brazilian EDs. Respondents indicated verbal and physical violence experienced within the preceding six months, along with associated psychological and occupational impacts. Univariable m

Impact of earned sick leave policies on parent-perpetrated maltreatment of children under five.

BACKGROUND: Earned sick leave (ESL) impacts the economic security of families of workers as it enables workers to take time off to address personal or familial health issues, with pay and job protection. All forms of child maltreatment are strongly related to the economic position of a family, but the relationship between state-level ESL policy adoption and rates of parent-perpetrated child maltreatment remains unexamined. METHODS: Annual state rates of parent-perpetrated maltreatment, neglect and physical abuse of children under the age of 5 years were derived from the National Child Abuse a

Understanding food insecurity risk in the United States: A longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity, lack of consistent access to the food needed for an active, healthy life, harms population health. Although substantial biomedical evidence examines the connections between food insecurity and health, fewer studies examine why food insecurity occurs. METHODS: We propose a conceptual understanding of food insecurity risk based on institutions that distribute income-the factor payment system (income distribution stemming from paid labor and asset ownership), transfers within households, and the government tax-and-transfer system. A key feature of our understanding i

Reporting of Social Determinants of Health in Pediatric Sepsis Studies.

OBJECTIVE: Standardized, consistent reporting of social determinants of health (SDOH) in studies on children with sepsis would allow for: 1) understanding the association of SDOH with illness severity and outcomes, 2) comparing populations and extrapolating study results, and 3) identification of potentially modifiable socioeconomic factors for policy makers. We, therefore, sought to determine how frequently data on SDOH were reported, which factors were collected and how these factors were defined in studies of sepsis in children. DATA SOURCES AND SELECTION: We reviewed 106 articles (publish

Personal and work-related factors associated with mental health among auto workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

Little is known about the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on non-healthcare workers, especially among those who weathered unemployment related to shutdowns and supply-chain disruptions. We administered a cross-sectional survey (May - October 2021) to understand patterns between personal and work-related predictors and mental health symptoms among in-person auto workers in the United States (N = 1,165). The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 and the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 measured the presence of anxiety and depressive symptoms, respectively. Predictors included the presence o
