Of the nearly 3.8 million infants born in the United States in 2018, 8.3% had low birth weight (<2500 g [5.5 lb]) and 10% were born preterm (gestational age of <37 completed weeks). Many of these infants and others with congenital anomalies, perinatally acquired infections, and other disease require admission to a NICU. In the past decade, admission rates to NICUs have been increasing; it is estimated that between 10% and 15% of infants will spend time in a NICU, representing approximately 500 000 neonates annually. Approximately 3600 infants die annually in the United States from sleep-relate

INTRODUCTION: globally, almost half of all deaths in children under five years of age occur among neonates. We investigated the predictors of mortality within 28 days among preterm infants at a tertiary hospital in Lusaka, Zambia.
METHODS: we reviewed admission records linked to birth, mortality, and hospital discharge from 1st January 2018 to 30th September 2019. Information was retrieved with a follow-up period of 28 days post-delivery to discharge/mortality. We used the Weibull hazards regression to establish the best predictor model for mortality among the neonates.
RESULTS: a total of 3

UNLABELLED: Approximately 11% of infants are born preterm, and complications of prematurity are the most common cause of death in children aged under five years. Almost one million preterm infants die each year across low, high and middle income countries. In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) convened a Guideline Development Group (GDG) to examine evidence and formulate recommendations for care of preterm or low birthweight (LBW) infants according to WHO Guideline Review Committee (GRC) criteria. GRADE methods were used to assess the certainty of evidence and the GDG developed judgemen

BACKGROUND: Globally, about 15% of newborns are born with a low birth weight (LBW) as a result of preterm birth or intrauterine growth restriction or both. Up to 70% of neonatal deaths occur in this group within the first 3 days after birth. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) applied after stabilization of the infant has been shown to reduce mortality by 40% among hospitalized infants with a birth weight of less than 2.0 kg. In these studies, infants were randomly assigned and KMC was initiated after about 3 days of age, when the majority of neonatal deaths would have already occurred. The aim of this

AIM: To assess long-term effects of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on motor development in adults born with birth weights ≤ 1800 g, compared to conventional neonatal care.
METHODS: This cohort analysis included 214 young adults with a history of birth weights ≤ 1800 g, mostly preterm, originally enrolled in a randomized controlled trial between 1993 and 1994 evaluating KMC. Motor system development was assessed using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to measure corticospinal excitability and interhemispheric communication. Fine motor skills were evaluated with the Nine Hole Peg Test (9HPT).

Setting: Rural Rwandan hospitals, where thermoregulation is critical yet a challenge for pre-term, low-birth-weight (LBW) or sick newborns. Objective: To assess the safety, effectiveness, and feasibility of an inexpensive, reusable, non-electric warmer to complement kangaroo mother care (KMC). Methods: Prospective single-arm, non-randomized intervention study. Enrolled infants were hypothermic or at risk of hypothermia due to prematurity/LBW. Infants used the warmer in conjunction with KMC or as the sole source of external heat. Temperatures of the infant, warmer and air were measured for up t

Background Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a widely implemented intervention developed as an alternative form of care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for neonates. The implementation of KMC has significantly reduced morbidity and mortality in very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWIs). Aim To describe the maternal and neonatal characteristics and clinical outcomes in VLBWIs who received KMC at a tertiary hospital. Methods This is a retrospective descriptive study of 981 VLBWIs admitted at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) over a six-year period (January 1, 2014, to

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a low-cost, safe, and simple method that has proven efficacious at improving neonatal health outcomes, including mortality, in low-income countries. While beneficial for all newborns, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends KMC specifically for low birthweight (LBW) and premature infants. This study examined the applicability of a modified Integrated Behavioral Model (IBM) framework for predicting KMC intentions among first-time mothers (FTMs) 15-24 years old in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This study used secondary cross-sectional data

Introduction and objectives Neonatal jaundice is often treated by phototherapy. Phototherapy is an inexpensive, uncomplicated, and relatively safe treatment option. However, considering certain side effects associated with phototherapy and the resultant mother-infant separation, measures to minimize exposure to phototherapy should be sought. Thus, this study was planned to investigate the effects of combining intermittent kangaroo mother care (KMC) on the duration of phototherapy in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NNH). Materials and methods It was an observational analytical study. All full-term

BACKGROUND: The perinatal mortality rate (PMR) in Nigeria rose by approximately 5% from 39 to 41 deaths per 1000 total births between 2008 and 2013, indicating a reversal in earlier gains. This study sought to identify factors associated with increased PMR.
METHODS: Nationally representative data including 31,121 pregnancies of 7 months or longer obtained from the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey were used to investigate the community-, socio-economic-, proximate- and environmental-level factors related to perinatal mortality (PM). Generalized linear latent and mixed models with the

INTRODUCTION: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) has been associated with improved growth in low birthweight infants and reduction in hypothermia, hypoglycaemia, apnoeas, sepsis, hospital stay, and mortality. The growth of HIV-infected children is poorer than those who are HIV-uninfected. There is paucity of data on weight gain in the HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants compared to HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU) infants receiving KMC.
AIM: This study compared the weight gain of HEU and infants HUU from admission to the KMC ward until 12 months corrected age (CA) follow-up visit.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a debilitating condition with adverse consequences for mothers and infants. Kangaroo mother care (KMC), involving prolonged skin-to-skin contact often combined with breastfeeding, has been proposed as an alternative intervention for improving maternal mental health.
METHODS: To examine the effect of KMC on PPD outcomes, scholarly databases, PubMed, and Google Scholar were searched for controlled trials published between 1998 and 2025 and reporting validated depression measures. Outcome measures in standardized mean differences (SMDs) were pooled usin

BACKGROUND: Skin-to-skin care immediately following delivery is a common practice for term infants and has been shown to improve cardiorespiratory stability, facilitate early bonding, and promote breastfeeding. Since 2007, the use of skin-to-skin care has been practiced for preterm infants from 32 weeks of gestation in the delivery room at St. Olav's University Hospital. In the present study we aim to investigate whether skin-to-skin care following delivery is safe, and how it affects early and late outcomes compared to standard care for very preterm infants.

Background/Objectives: Breastfeeding is universally recognized as essential for neonatal health, offering benefits that extend into later life stages. The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates for increasing access to effective, low-cost interventions that promote successful breastfeeding, such as skin-to-skin contact (SSC), kangaroo mother care (KMC), and rooming-in. This study aimed to assess the local context regarding the use and dissemination of practices such as prenatal classes, immediate and post-delivery SSC, rooming-in, and the management of discharge and post-discharge care. BACKGROUND: Obstetric hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide. Obstetric hemorrhage accounts for 27.1% of all maternal death worldwide. Of all obstetric hemorrhages, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) accounts for 72%. The physiological management of the third stage of labor is a growing area as a preventive measure to control postpartum blood loss. Immediate kangaroo mother care (KMC) is suggested as one of the physiological management methods of the third stage of labor to reduce postpartum blood loss. The duration of the third stage of labor, uterine involution, and amount of p
