[Preoperative devascularization of a vertebral metastasis with a spinal artery at the same level].

An hypervascular and lytic thoracic (Th10) vertebral metastasis from kidney neoplasm causing cord compression was successfully resected after embolization. Because the anterior spinal artery arose at the same level, arterial embolization was only partial and completed by percutaneous vertebroplasty using Nbutyl cyanoacrylate.

Studies evaluating the utility of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea as a positive control in carcinogenicity studies in the p53+/- mouse.

Studies conducted under the auspices of International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) have suggested that an alternative mouse carcinogenicity study may be substituted for the traditional 2-year mouse bioassay typically conducted to support the development of drug candidates. The purpose of this study was to characterize the carcinogenic potential of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU), a DNA alkylating agent, in p53+/- knockout mice to determine its suitability as a positive control agent in an alternative carcinogenicity model. p53+/- knockout mice were administered a single oral dose of 90 mg/kg an

Impact of the posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder subtype on survival.

BACKGROUND: Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a life-threatening complication of solid organ transplantation. Histologic heterogeneity and a lack of treatment standards have made evaluating clinical outcomes in specific patient populations difficult. This systematic literature review investigated the impact of the PTLD histologic subtype on survival in a large data set. METHODS: Case series were identified on PubMed with the search terms post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder/disease, PTLD, and solid organ transplantation, with additional publications identified thro

PAX2 and PAX8 expression in primary and metastatic renal tumors: a comprehensive comparison.

CONTEXT: The diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remains problematic, especially in the context of metastasis or small-needle biopsies. PAX2 and PAX8 transcription factors are known to be expressed by several histologic types of renal neoplasms. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic utility of PAX2 and PAX8 relative to one another, which has not been studied. DESIGN: Consecutive tissue sections from the archival samples of 243 primary and 99 metastatic renal neoplasms were submitted to PAX2 and PAX8 immunostain. RESULTS: Within the primary neoplasms, PAX2 versus PAX8 expression was note

Analysis of various malignant neoplasms detected by FDG-PET cancer screening program: based on a Japanese Nationwide Survey.

OBJECTIVE: The most distinctive feature of FDG-PET cancer screening program is the ability to find various kinds of malignant neoplasms in a single test. The aim of this survey is to clarify the range and frequency of various malignant neoplasms detected by FDG-PET cancer screening performed in Japan. METHODS: "FDG-PET cancer screening" was defined as FDG-PET or positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) scan with or without other tests performed for cancer screening of healthy subjects. This survey was based on a questionnaire regarding FDG-PET cancer screening. We analyze

Benign perivascular myoid cell tumor (myopericytoma) of the urinary tract: a report of 2 cases with an emphasis on differential diagnosis.

Myopericytoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm thought to comprise part of a spectrum of perivascular myoid cell neoplasms with myofibroma, angioleiomyoma, and glomus tumor. We describe 2 such neoplasms involving the urinary tract: 1 incidentally identified in the kidney of a 59-year-old woman and 1 in the urinary bladder of a 52-year-old woman who presented with urinary frequency and dysuria. Histologically, the bladder tumor was composed of numerous blood vessels surrounded by plump perivascular myoid cells, as in subcutaneous myopericytoma. The renal tumor showed similar morphology centrall

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis (TTM) of breast carcinoma within a solitary renal angiomyolipoma: a case report.

Angiomyolipomas of the kidney have been known to harbor malignant neoplasms including renal cell carcinoma. We report a case of a tumor-to-tumor metastasis (TTM) involving metastatic breast carcinoma and angiomyolipoma. The patient was a 67-year-old female with a history of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. Follow-up positron emission tomography 9 years later revealed a left renal mass, suspicious for a primary renal neoplasm, as well as a suspicious subpectoral lymph node. An ultrasound-guided needle biopsy of the lymph node demonstrated metastatic breast carcinoma. The patient underwe

Do Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors of the Kidney Have a Predilection for Inferior Vena Cava Involvement? A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

The primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the kidney is an extremely rare neoplasm, the diagnosis of which mainly depends upon histopathology, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and cytogenetics. A handful of cases reported in the literature mention about aggressive features of this neoplasm. The purpose of our study was to review our experience in not only the diagnosis and management of the patients with renal PNET but also to highlight its propensity to involve inferior vena cava (IVC) and also present a rare occurrence of Ewing's sarcoma (ES)/PNET of the renal pelvis. The clinical, operative,

Coexisting non-functioning pheochromocytoma and renal oncocytoma: a case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of an oncocytoma, coexisting with a non-functioning pheochromocytoma in a patient who was operated on for suspicion of a renal tumor with metastases to the ipsilateral adrenal gland. As oncocytoma is a relatively rare lesion of the kidney, estimated to account for approximately 3-5% of renal neoplasms, its coexistence with non-functioning pheochromocytoma, to the best of our knowledge, has not hitherto been described in the medical literature.

Neoplasms of the perivascular epithelioid cell involving the abdomen and the pelvis: cross-sectional imaging findings.

Neoplasms of the perivascular epithelioid cell (PEComas) represent a recently described heterogeneous group of mesenchymal tumors characterized by the presence of specific histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural findings. The PEComas encompass a family of neoplasms that include angiomyolipomas, clear cell sugar tumors, and lymphangioleiomyomatosis. The PEComas demonstrate a wide spectrum of clinicobiological behavior and imaging findings. Perivascular epithelioid cell, as the name implies, is a unique cell that is characterized by perivascular distribution and epithelioid morpho

Tumors of the rat kidney induced by nitrosourea compounds.

Apart from other lesions, 51 renal neoplasms were induced in rats by administration of methylethy-, dimethyl- and phenylmethylnitrosourea. 3 tumors originated from the renal pelvis and were classified as transitional cell papilloma (1) or transitional cell carcinoma (2). 48 neoplasms were considered as "mesenchymal tumors". These growths were regarded as rat kidney specific tumors. They display a wide spectrum of histological structures: spindle cells which are capable to differentiate into smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts, angioblasts, fat cells, and even into cartilage thus forming the typic

Renal toxicity of targeted therapies for renal cell carcinoma in patients with normal and impaired kidney function.

The introduction of novel targeted therapies during the last 2 decades has led to a significant improvement in patients' clinical outcomes with renal cell carcinoma. However, this improvement came at the price of a whole new spectrum of adverse events, including renal toxicity. Systemic treatment of patients with kidney neoplasms who often present with impairment of kidney function, even prior to treatment, poses an increasing diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for clinicians. Common lifestyle-related comorbidities, i.e., hypertension and diabetes, may contribute to further impairment of kid

Papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity and renal clear cell carcinoma: a case report of image-pathology-molecular multidimensional diagnosis and nephron sparing surgery practice.

Papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity (PRNRP) is a new pathological type of renal tumor, and its incidence is low. It is considered to be an indolent renal tumor at present. It is rare for PRNRP to co-occur with other tumors in the same kidney. Like other renal tumors, patients with PRNRP do not have any specific clinical manifestations. During surgery, we resected a solid and a cystic lesion in the left kidney simultaneously, and performed two partial nephrectomy on the ipsilateral kidney at one time, both with good surgical results. The postoperative pathological results were as fol

Oncocytic carcinoid of the kidney associated with periodic Cushing's syndrome.

An oncocytic carcinoid of the kidney producing a periodic Cushing's syndrome in an adolescent is described. The tumor displayed gross, histologic, and ultrastructural features similar to renal oncocytoma, another unusual renal neoplasm. A review of renal carcinoids and possible associations between oncocytic change and periodic hormone production are discussed.

Hereditary and familial kidney cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Changing strategies in the evaluation and treatment of renal neoplasms have been fostered by developments in the understanding of the genetics and molecular biology of renal tumors. Many of these discoveries have come from research into hereditary kidney cancer syndromes and the genetic mutations responsible for tumorigenesis. The purpose of this review is to familiarize the reader with the known heritable forms of kidney cancer, the recent advances in the field and their impact on patient management. RECENT FINDINGS: Genetic and phenotypic characterization of renal cancer

Hypernephroma in the solitary kidney: experience with 20 cases and review of the literature.

Twenty patients with renal cell carcinoma in anatomically or functionally solitary kidneys were treated and followed for up to 18 years. Factors pertinent to management and survival of these patients and 66 other well documented similar patients reported in the literature are analyzed. Most of the patients were unusually young and a significant number had had nephrectomy for contralateral renal cell carcinoma. Survival was closely related to the earlier presence of malignant disease in the other kidney, the duration of the interval between detection of the 2 neoplasms and the stage of the lesi

From the spectrum of PEComa: a renal angiomyolipoma.

PEComas or Perivascular Epithelioid Cell neoplasms are uncommon mesenchymal origin neoplasms composed of perivascular epithelioid cells. They affect various anatomic sites, kidneys being one of them. Renal PEComas are further rare, posing a challenge to include them in the differential diagnoses. We present a case of a type of renal PEComa in a 54-year old post-menopausal female with vague abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a large left perinephric mass initially suspected to be a liposarcoma. Surgical excision and subsequent histopathological evaluation confirmed a benign, fat predominant renal

Renal medullary carcinoma: a report of 2 cases and review of the literature.

Renal medullary carcinoma is a recently described aggressive neoplasm of the kidney. With the exception of 2 patients, all other reported cases have been associated with sickle cell hemoglobinopathies, mainly sickle cell trait and hemoglobin SC disease. Renal medullary carcinoma is a highly malignant tumor with evidence of angiolymphatic and distant metastasis at the time of diagnosis. No specific genetic abnormality has been identified in this neoplasm despite its close association with a genetic disease. We describe 2 cases of renal medullary carcinoma, one associated with hemoglobin SC dise
