Gabapentin may promote language development in a pediatric patient with autism spectrum disorder: a case report.

At this time, there is no report of how gabapentin may promote language development in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experiencing neuropathic pain. A clinically significant increase in expressed vocabulary, around 10 words when gabapentin was prescribed to around 150 words at the 6-month follow-up, was observed in a child with ASD. This was likely due to improved symptoms of neuropathic pain, which could have allowed the patient to more effectively focus on language acquisition. Given that speech therapy had failed for years at that time to improve the patient's vocabulary and h

GraphRAG-Enabled Local Large Language Model for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Development of a Proof-of-Concept.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a prevalent chronic condition that affects maternal and fetal health outcomes worldwide, increasingly in underserved populations. While generative artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) have shown promise in health care, their application in GDM management remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether retrieval-augmented generation techniques, when combined with knowledge graphs (KGs), could improve the contextual relevance and accuracy of AI-driven clinical decision support. For this, we dev

Bilingual Exposure Does not Delay Language Development in Preterm Toddlers: Findings From 24 to 30 Months.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this research was to compare language growth from 24 to 30 months of age among English monolingual toddlers, Spanish monolingual toddlers, and Spanish-English bilingual toddlers who were born preterm. Previous research has led to inconsistent findings about the relationship between bilingual exposure and language development for children born preterm. Based on research from other populations of children at-risk for language difficulties, we hypothesized that bilingual exposure would not worsen language difficulties among children born preterm. METHODS: Between August 20

Large Language Models for Heterogeneous Data Mining in Liver Disease: Framework Development and Retrospective Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating among liver disease entities such as autoimmune liver disease (AILD), drug-induced liver injury (DILI), and chronic hepatitis B (CHB) remains clinically challenging due to overlapping clinical manifestations and nonspecific laboratory findings. Conventional machine learning (ML) approaches rely mainly on structured laboratory data, whereas free-text clinical reports and other heterogeneous electronic medical record data are often underused. Large language models (LLMs) may provide a strategy for encoding heterogeneous clinical information, yet their usefulness for l

Initial development and preliminary psychometric evaluation of the English-language Latino Parenting Styles and Behavior Scale.

Most parenting measures were developed outside Latino contexts and may not capture dimensions relevant to Latino parents. This brief report describes preliminary psychometric evaluation of the English-language Latino Parenting Styles and Behaviors Scale in 150 English-speaking Latino parents from South Florida. Items were drawn from parenting instruments and Latino parenting literature, revised after pilot interviews, and analyzed using principal axis exploratory factor analysis with oblique rotation. Analysis supported a 24-item, six-domain structure: Warmth, Autonomy Granting, Accommodation,

Ethnocultural empathy development of future language teachers through digital multiliteracy resources for low-literacy adult migrants.

UNLABELLED: The increasingly digital and multicultural 21st-century society requires future teachers to be prepared for the changes and challenges they may encounter. Not only language and digital competences, but critical-thinking and problem-solving skills are needed. Moreover, well developed socio-affective abilities, empathy among them, are also key when dealing with others. This is even more relevant when teachers are to work with a non-mainstream population, such as adult migrants with low literacy levels, and to design student-centered curricula or activities. Empathy is a multifaceted

Why Language Matters in Digital Endpoint Development: Harmonized Terminology as a Key Prerequisite for Evidence Generation.

BACKGROUND: Developments in the field of digital measures and digitally derived endpoints demand greater attention on globally aligned approaches to enhance digital measure acceptance by regulatory authorities and health technology assessment (HTA) bodies for decision-making. In order to maximize the value of digital measures in global drug development programs and to ensure study teams and regulators are referring to the same items, greater alignment of concepts, definitions, and terminology is required. This is a fast-moving complex field; every day brings new technologies, algorithms, and p

Recurrent acute kidney injury is associated with delayed language development in infants with Congenital Heart Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Neurodevelopmental delay is common in children who undergo surgery for Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) in infancy. Cardiac surgery associated acute kidney injury (CS-AKI) occurs frequently in the paediatric cardiac Intensive care unit (ICU). Cardiac surgery associated acute kidney injury (CS-AKI) is associated with worse neurodevelopmental scores and delay in cognitive, language, and motor domains in children with CHD. No known data exist regarding the association of CS-AKI and motor and language subscales. In this study, we explored the relationship between CS-AKI and receptive and

Infant mismatch responses to speech-sound changes predict language development in preschoolers at risk for dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated how infant mismatch responses (MMRs), which have the potential for providing information on auditory discrimination abilities, could predict subsequent development of pre-reading skills and the risk for familial dyslexia. METHODS: We recorded MMRs to vowel, duration, and frequency deviants in pseudo-words at birth and 28 months in a sample over-represented by infants with dyslexia risk. We examined MMRs' associations with pre-reading skills at 28 months and 4-5 years and compared the results in subgroups with vs. without dyslexia risk. RESULTS: Larger positive MMR

Phonological development in first language Laki-speaking children aged 3 to 5 years: A pilot study.

PURPOSE: To date there are no studies of speech sound acquisition in Laki, a language spoken in western regions of Iran. Thus, we set out a pilot study to investigate the speech development of 56 first language Laki-speaking children (aged 3-5 years). METHOD: Single words were elicited through a picture naming test specifically developed for this study. After recording and transcribing of speech samples, percentage of consonants correct (PCC), percentage of vowels correct (PVC), and proportion of whole word proximity (PWP) were documented in four age groups (36-41, 42-47, 48-53, and 54-59 mon

Automatic Classification of Thyroid Findings Using Static and Contextualized Ensemble Natural Language Processing Systems: Development Study.

BACKGROUND: In the case of Korean institutions and enterprises that collect nonstandardized and nonunified formats of electronic medical examination results from multiple medical institutions, a group of experienced nurses who can understand the results and related contexts initially classified the reports manually. The classification guidelines were established by years of workers' clinical experiences and there were attempts to automate the classification work. However, there have been problems in which rule-based algorithms or human labor-intensive efforts can be time-consuming or limited o

Longitudinal changes in resting-state fMRI from age 5 to age 6years covary with language development.

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging is a powerful technique to study the whole-brain neural connectivity that underlies cognitive systems. The present study aimed to define the changes in neural connectivity in their relation to language development. Longitudinal resting-state functional data were acquired from a cohort of preschool children at age 5 and one year later, and changes in functional connectivity were correlated with language performance in sentence comprehension. For this, degree centrality, a voxel-based network measure, was used to assess age-related differences

Early gross motor skills predict the subsequent development of language in children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Motor milestones such as the onset of walking are important developmental markers, not only for later motor skills but also for more widespread social-cognitive development. The aim of the current study was to test whether gross motor abilities, specifically the onset of walking, predicted the subsequent rate of language development in a large cohort of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: We ran growth curve models for expressive and receptive language measured at 2, 3, 5 and 9 years in 209 autistic children. Measures of gross motor, visual reception and autism
