Investigating the Effects of Adding Explicit Teaching and/or Signing to Story-Based Vocabulary Intervention for School-Aged Children With (Developmental) Language Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with language disorders, including developmental language disorder (DLD), experience challenges with word learning. Common components of vocabulary interventions include presenting target words in a story, providing explicit teaching and using sign/gesture alongside speech. However, previous studies have not investigated the relative contribution of these components, in isolation or combination. AIM: To measure the effects of adding explicit teaching and/or augmentative signing to a story-based vocabulary intervention. METHODS: Eighteen participants, aged 7;09-15;02 year

Clinical Screening Tools to Identify Adolescents at Risk for Developmental Language Disorder: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Adolescents with developmental language disorder (DLD) are an underserved population. Having DLD affects adolescents' academic and eventual economic success, supporting the need for accurate, clinically feasible DLD screening tools for adolescents. The objective of this review is to identify clinically feasible screening tools for adolescents and to appraise the quality of the methods used in studies that report the classification accuracy of the identified screeners. METHOD: Records were included that described empirical studies of brief tasks to identify risk for DLD in 12- to 21-y

The NeuroBel: A Screening Test for Verbal Language Impairment in Spanish-Speaking Elderly People With Cognitive Decline.

PURPOSE: The NeuroBel is a short test that can detect cognitive decline using language tasks. This study replicated previous research using larger clinical samples from three Spanish-speaking countries. METHOD: Eight tasks were used to analyze verbal language functioning using a psycholinguistic approach. A total of 232 elderly, monolingual Spanish speakers from Spain, Cuba, and Colombia participated in this study. Of these, 76 had Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the initial phase, 75 had mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 81 did not exhibit cognitive impairment (healthy controls). RESULTS: Si

UK speech and language therapists' assessment of children's expressive language, and functional impairment and impact, following the CATALISE publications.

BACKGROUND: In 2016/17, the CATALISE Consortium published the results of a multinational and multidisciplinary Delphi consensus study, representing agreement among professionals about the definition and process of identification of children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) (Bishop et al., 2016, 2017). The extent to which the current clinical practice of UK speech and language therapists (SLTs) reflects the CATALISE consensus statements is unknown. AIMS: To investigate how UK SLTs' expressive language assessment practices reflect the CATALISE documents' emphasis on the functional imp

When Developmental Language Disorder Meets Diglossia: A Cross-Sectional Investigation of Listening Comprehension Among Native Arabic-Speaking Preschoolers.

Diglossia in the Arabic language refers to the existence of two varieties of the same language: the Spoken Arabic (SA) and the Literary Arabic (LA). This study examined the development of listening comprehension (LC) among diglossic Arabic K1-K3. For this purpose, a large sample of typically developing (TD; N = 210) and developmental language disorder children (DLD; N = 118) were examined using SA and LA texts. The analysis of variance conducted on their performance in LC revealed significant effects of K-level, group (TD vs. DLD) and text affiliation (SA vs. LA): higher scores in TD and in SA

What Children with Developmental Language Disorder Teach Us About Cross-Situational Word Learning.

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) served as a test case for determining the role of extant vocabulary knowledge, endogenous attention, and phonological working memory abilities in cross-situational word learning. First-graders (Mage = 7 years; 3 months), 44 with typical development (TD) and 28 with DLD, completed a cross-situational word-learning task comprised six cycles, followed by retention tests and independent assessments of attention, memory, and vocabulary. Children with DLD scored lower than those with TD on all measures of learning and retention, a performance gap t

Learning to spell for children 5-8 years of age: The importance of an integrated approach to ensure the development of phonic, orthographic and morphemic knowledge at compatible levels.

This paper considers samples of independent writing highlighting the integral role of phonology, orthography and morphology in spelling development for children from 5-6 years to 7-8 years (3 years of formal schooling). It also introduces an approach to monitoring spelling development by considering the sources of knowledge that are evident in children's attempts to spell when writing independently. Synthetic phonics can be a powerful and effective strategy for both reading and spelling; however when the development of a synthetic phonics strategy fails to take account of the importance of com

How Young Children Learn Language and Speech.

Pediatric clinicians are on the front line for prevention of language and speech disorders. This review uses prevailing theories and recent data to justify strategies for prevention, screening and detection, diagnosis, and treatment of language and speech disorders. Primary prevention rests on theories that language learning is an interaction between the child's learning capacities and the language environment. Language learning occurs in a social context with active child engagement. Theories support parent education and public programs that increase children's exposure to child-directed spee

Early communicative skills of children with Klinefelter syndrome.

Many studies reported the presence of language impairments in children and adolescents with Klinefelter syndrome (KS). However, the first stage of their language development has been scarcely studied. The present study aimed to describe the spontaneous communicative production of 18-month-old children with KS, in comparison with that of typically developing (TD) male peers, aiming to verify the existence of different early communicative skills in both vocal and gestural modality and to identify the presence of possible associations with their later vocabulary size. Children with KS showed a lo

Intervention studies with group design targeting expressive phonology for children with developmental speech and language disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Phonological difficulties are prevalent in children with speech and/or language disorders and may hamper their later language outcomes and academic achievements. These children often form a significant proportion of speech and language therapists' caseloads. There is a shortage of information on evidence-based interventions for improving phonological skills in children and adolescents with speech and language disorder. AIMS: The aim of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis was to systematically examine the effects of different intervention approaches on speech produc

Electroen cephalography correlates of word and non-word listening in children with specific language impairment: An observational study [corrected].

Auditory processing in children diagnosed with speech and language impairment (SLI) is atypical and characterized by reduced brain activation compared to typically developing (TD) children. In typical speech and language development processes, frontal, temporal, and posterior regions are engaged during single-word listening, while for non-word listening, it is highly unlikely that perceiving or speaking them is not followed by frequent neurones' activation enough to form stable network connections. This study aimed to investigate the electrophysiological cortical activity of alpha rhythm while

Heritability of Specific Language Impairment and Nonspecific Language Impairment at Ages 4 and 6 Years Across Phenotypes of Speech, Language, and Nonverbal Cognition.

Purpose Early language and speech acquisition can be delayed in twin children, a twinning effect that diminishes between 4 and 6 years of age in a population-based sample. The purposes of this study were to examine how twinning effects influence the identification of children with language impairments at 4 and 6 years of age, comparing children with specific language impairment (SLI) and nonspecific language impairment (NLI); the likelihood that affectedness will be shared within monozygotic versus dizygotic twin pairs; and estimated levels of heritability for SLI and NLI. Visual attentional engagement deficits in children with specific language impairment and their role in real-time language processing.

In order to become a proficient user of language, infants must detect temporal cues embedded within the noisy acoustic spectra of ongoing speech by efficient attentional engagement. According to the neuro-constructivist approach, a multi-sensory dysfunction of attentional engagement - hampering the temporal sampling of stimuli - might be responsible for language deficits typically shown in children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). In the present study, the efficiency of visual attentional engagement was investigated in 22 children with SLI and 22 typically developing (TD) children by m

Morphosyntactic abilities in young children with Down syndrome: Evidence from the Greek language.

Down syndrome is the most common genetic syndrome of intellectual disabilities with a distinct linguistic profile. Language research so far has come mainly from the English language, a language with different syntax and morphology from many other languages, including Greek, indicating a paucity of research findings in the Greek language. Given the rich morphology and distinct syntactic characteristics of the Greek language, the present study evaluated the performance of children with Down syndrome (N = 45) who are native Greek speakers in syntax and morphology and compared it with the performa

Prompting for repair as a language teaching strategy for augmentative and alternative communication.

Conversational repair has been found to play a fundamental role in the acquisition of language. This paper describes existing research on conversational repair and its relationship to language learning, whether a first language or a second language, as well as its relevance to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). A case is made for incorporating prompts to repair in conversation-based language interventions with children learning to use AAC. We argue that interventions targeting linguistic complexity should encourage self-repair in conversation in order to develop linguistic and o

Ten questions about terminology for children with unexplained language problems.

BACKGROUND: In domains other than language, there is fairly consistent diagnostic terminology to refer to children's developmental difficulties. For instance, the terms 'dyslexia', 'attention deficit hyperactivity disorder' and 'autistic spectrum disorder' are used for difficulties with reading, attention or social cognition, respectively. There is no agreed label, however, for children with unexplained language problems. AIMS: To consider whether we need labels for unexplained language problems in children, and if so, what terminology is appropriate. MAIN CONTRIBUTION: There are both advant
