Predicting later language outcomes from the Language Use Inventory.

PURPOSE: To examine the predictive validity of the Language Use Inventory (LUI), a parent report of language use by children 18-47 months old (O'Neill, 2009). METHOD: 348 children whose parents had completed the LUI were reassessed at 5-6 years old with standardized, norm-referenced language measures and parent report of developmental history. The relationship between scores on the LUI and later measures was examined through correlation, binary classification, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. RESULTS: For children aged 24-47 months at the time of LUI completion, LUI scor

Exploring the use of artificial language learning (ALL) paradigms to differentiate intrinsic versus extrinsic sources of language impairment.

PURPOSE: The current investigation aimed to explore the potential of Artificial Language Learning (ALL) paradigms to distinguish between poor language abilities due to intrinsic difficulties in language learning as opposed to difficulties stemming from extrinsic factors such as environmental factors. METHOD: Using a 2-step population-based screening procedure, 35 children from mid-high SES with presumed developmental language disorders (pDLD) were compared to an unselected sample of 33 children from low SES on measures of accumulated lexical and morphological knowledge and on tasks assessing

Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts' (SALT) transcribing method and Narrative Assessment Protocol (NAP) online coding method: are they interchangeable?

Purpose: A narrative is a reliable tool for assessing the child's oral language. There are various narrative assessment tools. Most of them follow the Language Sample Analysis method such as Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT) which is time-consuming and needs extensive training. The Narrative Assessment Protocol (NAP) offers a free and faster method of assessment to administer. The current study compared the NAP online and offline coding methods. Methods: Fifty-two kindergarteners (40-66 months old) were voice-recorded while generating a story. A transcriber coded the samples us

Can sex influence the neurocognition of language? Evidence from Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD), which involves basal ganglia degeneration, affects language as well as motor function. However, which aspects of language are impaired in PD and under what circumstances remains unclear. We examined whether lexical and grammatical aspects of language are differentially affected in PD, and whether this dissociation is moderated by sex as well as the degree of basal ganglia degeneration. Our predictions were based on the declarative/procedural model of language. The model posits that grammatical composition, including in regular inflection, depends importantly on left b

Evaluating a Targeted Language Intervention for Children Aged 4-6 Years-Applying an 'Information Carrying Words' Approach.

BACKGROUND: Very little research has investigated the use of the information carrying words (ICW) construct within language interventions, despite its very widespread use in speech and language therapy in the United Kingdom. The Language Enrichment Activity Programme (LEAP) is an intervention programme that applies the ICW construct to differentiate children's level of need and structure play-based learning activities. LEAP sessions are designed to be child-led, building language skills through application of communication supporting strategies (CSS) such as modelling, recasting and inviting c

Identifying and describing developmental language disorder in children.

BACKGROUND: In 2016-17 an important consensus was established regarding the use of the diagnostic label 'developmental language disorder' (DLD) to describe children with a persistent language problem having a functional impact on communication or learning and in the absence of any other biomedical condition. Despite this consensus, past research has revealed ongoing uncertainty regarding when to use the DLD label among speech-language pathologists (SLPs). AIMS: In response to this uncertainty, a survey of SLPs was conducted aimed at investigating which types of clinical language profiles, and

Narrative Tell and Retell in Mandarin-English Bilingual Children.

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists often adopt narrative tasks to assess bilingual children's language skills. However, limited research guides clinical decisions about elicitation method, assessment language, and interpretation of results for specific bilingual populations. The present study examined the impact of elicitation method (tell vs. retell) and language (Mandarin vs. English) on macro- and microstructure narrative skills in Mandarin-English bilingual children. METHOD: We collected narrative tell and retell samples from 79 Mandarin-English bilingual children using the Multilingua

The psychometric status of child language assessment tools in South Africa's official languages.

Despite advancements in recognising the importance of early child language development and linguistic diversity in South Africa, culturally and linguistically appropriate assessment tools remain unevenly distributed across the official languages, posing considerable challenges for researchers and speech-language therapists. This study critically reviews the psychometric status of child language assessment tools in South Africa's official languages. The current state of tool development is analysed, evaluating language assessment tools available for clinical and research purposes in each langua

Impaired communication ability in SOX11 syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language skills are important for social interaction and learning. This study characterised the communication abilities of verbal individuals with SOX11 syndrome using a standardised parent/carer questionnaire, the Children's Communication Checklist (CCC-2). METHOD: Thirteen parent/carers of verbal individuals (aged 5-19 years) diagnosed with SOX11 syndrome completed the CCC-2. In order to contextualise findings, responses were compared to norms and to data from Noonan syndrome, a relatively well-known genetic diagnosis associated with communication impairment. RESULTS

The vocabulary profile of Slovak children with primary language impairment compared to typically developing Slovak children measured by LITMUS-CLT.

This study compared a sample of children with primary language impairment (PLI) and typically developing age-matched children using the crosslinguistic lexical tasks (CLT-SK). We also compared the PLI children with typically developing language-matched younger children who were matched on the basis of receptive vocabulary. Overall, statistical testing showed that the vocabulary of the PLI children was significantly different from the vocabulary of the age-matched children, but not statistically different from the younger children who were matched on the basis of their receptive vocabulary size

Auditory temporal processing deficits and language disorders in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1.

UNLABELLED: Previous findings from a case report led to the argument of whether other patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) may have abnormal central auditory function, particularly auditory temporal processing. We hypothesized that it is associated with language and learning disabilities in this population. The aim of this study was to measure central auditory temporal function in NF1 patients and correlate it with the results of language evaluation tests. A descriptive/comparative study including 25 NF1 individuals and 22 healthy controls compared their performances on audiometric eva

Effect of different cochlear implantation timings on long-term language development outcomes of pediatric unilateral cochlear implant cases.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation provides an opportunity for children with congenital severe to profound hearing loss to acquire spoken language. However, as multiple factors influence language outcomes after cochlear implantation, language development performance can vary between individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study participants (n = 150) were divided into three groups according to age at cochlear implantation: Group 1, 12-24 months; Group 2, 25-36 months; and Group 3, 37-48 months. The effect of age at implantation on auditory perception and language development performance was
