Shaping future leaders: developing an MPH leadership curriculum through problem-based learning.

Leadership is essential to public health practice, yet few MPH programs offer structured, integrated approaches to cultivating leadership competencies. At the University of North Carolina's Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Leadership in Practice (LIP) MPH concentration responds to this gap by embedding problem-based learning (PBL) throughout a multi-course curriculum designed to prepare students for real-world leadership challenges. Drawing on interdisciplinary faculty expertise and a constructivist pedagogical philosophy, the LIP curriculum emphasizes systems thinking, strategic d

Quantum leadership: new approach in managing shoulder dystocia in simulation-based training.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder dystocia, a challenging condition for obstetricians, poses significant risks to both maternal and neonatal health, including maternal postpartum hemorrhage, neonatal hypoxia, and brachial plexus injury. Despite being unpredictable and unpreventable, effective management can mitigate these risks. Miscommunication and poor leadership are responsible for 72% of medical errors, which further highlights the importance of robust leadership skills in obstetric emergencies. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative study involving 20 participants through structured interviews as

Coronavirus pandemic derived demands and inclusive leadership on junior doctors' well-being.

BACKGROUND: International studies have revealed that numerous challenges (e.g. job demands) and opportunities (e.g. job resources as protective factors) affect the well-being of healthcare workers. AIMS: Building on the job demands-resources theory, we explored how job-related demands and the role of inclusive leadership as a job resource influenced the well-being of junior doctors during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional web survey was conducted in July 2022 for 82 junior doctors who had experienced the 3-year COVID-19 pandemic. The survey captured

Spiritual leadership influence on employee creative service performance: a moderated mediation analysis.

This paper expands the understanding of the relationship between spiritual leadership (SPL) and the creative service performance of employees. The research model, based on cognitive evaluation theory, examines the mediating role of employee autonomy and the moderating role of proactive personality in the relationship between SPL and employee creative service performance. Data was collected from 351 employees in China to test the moderated mediation model of this study. The empirical analysis reveals a positive association between SPL and employee autonomy, which in turn leads to increased empl

Linking Employees' Boundary-Spanning Behaviour to Leadership Emergence: A Social Exchange Theory Perspective.

This study examined the links between employees' boundary-spanning behaviour and leadership emergence, focusing on the mediating role of prestige and the moderating roles of coworker support and relational-interdependent self-construal. Two studies were conducted to test the hypotheses. Study 1 (experimental survey, N = 208) tested the mediation hypotheses. Study 2 (questionnaire study, N = 691) extended Study 1 by examining the moderated mediation model. The results show that employees' boundary-spanning behaviour is positively related to leadership emergence, which is mediated by prestige. A

How an inter-organizational network hub orchestrates collective leadership to advance population health.

Inter-organizational networks are increasingly used to address complex health challenges, yet little is known about how "hub" organizations at the center of such networks cultivate relational processes that enable network effectiveness. Drawing on organizational network and collective leadership theories, we examined the relational processes that a structurally central hub organization used to influences a multi-sector network. We used in-depth qualitative methods to study a local health department that served as hub of a network of over 25 organizations establishing new behavioral health cris

Six-Domain Moral Ecology Framework for Quality Leadership in Healthcare: A Conceptual Synthesis.

IntroductionHealthcare leaders are expected to deliver safer care, better outcomes, and improved access while navigating workforce shortages, moral distress, and administrative burden. Improvement efforts oscillate between culture-first and systems-first approaches, each generating predictable failure modes - metric gaming, burnout, superficial compliance, and persistent safety variation. A practical, integrative framework for quality leadership that spans culture, systems, incentives, and governance is lacking.MethodsThis conceptual synthesis develops a 'moral ecology' model for quality leade

One brain, one mind: A joint EPA-EAN leadership perspective on brain health.

Neurology and psychiatry have operated as separate disciplines for over a century, yet this division reflects historical and institutional developments rather than the underlying biology of the brain. Contemporary neuroscience shows that brain and mental health disorders share genetic susceptibilities, inflammatory and metabolic pathways, environmental and social risk factors, and clinical features that cross diagnostic boundaries. Cognitive, emotional, sensory, and motor symptoms regularly appear across both neurological and psychiatric populations, and conditions such as seizures, psychosis,

The Augmented Leader: Four Competencies for AI-Integrated Leadership Development in Higher Education.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping decision-making and organizational life, yet leadership development in higher education has not evolved at the same pace. To address this gap, the article proposes the concept of the "augmented leader" and develops a four-competency framework for AI-integrated leadership: algorithmic literacy, strategic use of AI, ethical leadership and governance, and culture and adoption. Based on an integrative literature review and expert-informed thematic synthesis, the framework offers a structured perspective on leadership in AI-mediated environments. The articl

Back to the Future: Long-Term Leadership Lessons From the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The loss of 50,000,000 people during the 1918 influenza pandemic was blamed on war, unsanitary conditions, and lack of vaccines and preparation. Nine decades later, a similar virus (H1N1) killed 285,000 people, and again, the response was that preparation was ineffective, inefficient, and inequitable. Less than a decade later, preparedness for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak revealed the United States was not prepared. This study's objectives were: 1) to develop a deeper understanding of leadership practices that led to successful responses to the COVID-19 pandem
