Learning about children from literature.

Which tells us more about children, behavioral science or the general literature? Actually, neither gave us much information until the last two centuries. Only since Rousseau's contributions in literature and Darwin's in science have accurate descriptions been offered. Now one can find presentations on the impact of physical characteristics and disabilities, family interactions, other social influences, and temperamental predispositions in both literature and science. The difference in treatment is that science describes in abstractions the general principles of human nature, while literature

Learning impairment and allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis is underestimated as a cause of suffering and diminished quality of life in children and adolescents. If nasal symptoms such as itching, sneezing, rhinorrhea, and congestion are not well controlled during the day, they may contribute to learning problems during school hours. If these symptoms are not well controlled during the night, they may contribute to nocturnal sleep loss, secondary daytime fatigue and learning impairment. Even uncomplicated seasonal allergic rhinitis may be associated with reduced ability to learn, and the likelihood of learning problems may increase in

Sensorimotor learning in ideomotor apraxia.

Sensorimotor learning ability in patients with ideomotor apraxia was investigated, using as subjects, eight patients with ideomotor apraxia, 8 with aphasia without ideomotor apraxia, and 8 normal controls. The aphasia, apraxia, and normal control groups were matched for age, sex, and education. The aphasia and apraxia groups were chosen to control for lesion size and scores on Kimura's recurring figure test, the Token test, and intelligence. The mirror-aiming test was performed and the learning effect in terms of decreases in total time, the number of errors, and the times for errors were exam

Tourette syndrome and learning disabilities.

We reviewed the records of 42 consecutive cases of children with Tourette Syndrome (TS) who had IQs above 70, and contrasted the reading, reading comprehension, math, and spelling quotients with IQ scores to determine how many would meet criteria for a learning disability. The mean IQ of the 35 males and 7 females was 94.4 and was higher than the mean math score (82.8), spelling score (90.4), reading score (87.4), and reading comprehension score (85.3). Using a 1.5 standard deviation discrepancy, 51% met criteria for learning disability in at least one academic area; 21% had a 2-standard-devia

Differential learning of phonological oppositions.

This study evaluated whether variations in the structure of minimal versus maximal opposition treatments would result in empirical differences in phonological learning. Subjects were 3 children who excluded at least six sounds from their pretreatment phonetic and phonemic inventories. An alternating treatments design in combination with a staggered multiple baseline across subjects was used to evaluate differences in learning the two types of oppositions. Results indicated that treatment of maximal oppositions led to greater improvement in the children's production of treated sounds, more addi

Motor learning after stroke: what we've learned and what lies ahead.

Each year, there are millions of new stroke survivors globally. As many as 75% of stroke survivors will have impairments in moving their upper limb(s) that compromise daily activities like eating and grooming. Stroke rehabilitation practices often rely on motor learning principles to facilitate the recovery of motor function. Many principles applied in a therapy setting have been derived from studies involving healthy adults, even though stroke-related brain damage may alter these processes. Other studies have focused on the chronic stage of stroke recovery (>6 months post-stroke), despite mos

A theory of cerebellar learning as spike-based reinforcement learning in continuous time and space.

The cerebellum has been considered to perform error-based supervised learning via long-term depression (LTD) at synapses between parallel fibers and Purkinje cells (PCs). Since the discovery of multiple synaptic plasticity other than LTD, recent studies have suggested that synergistic plasticity mechanisms could enhance the learning capability of the cerebellum. Indeed, we have proposed a concept of cerebellar learning as a reinforcement learning (RL) machine. However, there is still a gap between the conceptual algorithm and its detailed implementation. To close this gap, in this research, we

Machine Learning to Improve the Access to the Clinical Pathway for Children with Specific Learning Disabilities.

A prompt diagnosis of specific learning disabilities (SLDs) is prevented by an overwhelmed healthcare system. As teachers lack clinical preparation, school-based screening needs to be improved. This work proposes methods to (1) identify children's profiles, (2) select children who need a visit, and (3) provide a better understanding of the characteristics connected with the start of the clinical pathway. We analyzed data from 364 children referred to clinical consultation. Starting from a 96-item screening questionnaire filled in by teachers at school, we computed a severity score for 19 diffe

Machine learning and deep learning models for the diagnosis of apical periodontitis: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the existing literature on the use of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models for diagnosing apical periodontitis (AP) in humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following the Arksey and O'Malley framework. The PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases were searched, focusing on articles using ML/DL approaches for AP diagnosis. No restrictions were applied. Two independent reviewers screened publications and charted data in predefined Excel tables for analysis. RESULTS: Nineteen publications focused on diagnosing AP by identifying pe

Stimulation of the vagus nerve reduces learning in a go/no-go reinforcement learning task.

When facing decisions to approach rewards or to avoid punishments, we often figuratively go with our gut, and the impact of metabolic states such as hunger on motivation are well documented. However, whether and how vagal feedback signals from the gut influence instrumental actions is unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of non-invasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) vs. sham (randomized cross-over design) on approach and avoidance behavior using an established go/no-go reinforcement learning paradigm in 39 healthy human participants (23 female) after an overnigh

Exploring Feature Dimensions to Learn a New Policy in an Uninformed Reinforcement Learning Task.

When making a choice with limited information, we explore new features through trial-and-error to learn how they are related. However, few studies have investigated exploratory behaviour when information is limited. In this study, we address, at both the behavioural and neural level, how, when, and why humans explore new feature dimensions to learn a new policy for choosing a state-space. We designed a novel multi-dimensional reinforcement learning task to encourage participants to explore and learn new features, then used a reinforcement learning algorithm to model policy exploration and lear

Learning to grasp and extract affordances: the Integrated Learning of Grasps and Affordances (ILGA) model.

The activity of certain parietal neurons has been interpreted as encoding affordances (directly perceivable opportunities) for grasping. Separate computational models have been developed for infant grasp learning and affordance learning, but no single model has yet combined these processes in a neurobiologically plausible way. We present the Integrated Learning of Grasps and Affordances (ILGA) model that simultaneously learns grasp affordances from visual object features and motor parameters for planning grasps using trial-and-error reinforcement learning. As in the Infant Learning to Grasp Mo

Listening to the views of children with learning disabilities: an evaluation of a learning disability CAMHS service.

In line with Valuing People Now: A New Three-year Strategy for People With Learning Disabilities (Department of Health, 2009), this article details a service evaluation for a learning disability-child and adolescent mental health service (LD-CAMHS) in Chesterfield, North Derbyshire. The aim of the project was to produce a set of quality standards in order to ensure service users' needs are met. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven children between the ages of 11 and 17 years, with moderate to severe learning disabilities. Four themes were derived from a thematic analysis; the e

Dictionary learning for kernel EDMD.

Studying nonlinear dynamical systems through their state space behavior can be challenging, and one possible alternative is to analyze them via their associated Koopman operator. This turns the nonlinear problem into a linear, infinite-dimensional one. To approximate the operator in finite dimensions, extended dynamic mode decomposition (EDMD) is a commonly used algorithm. It requires a finite list of functionals and a set of snapshots from the system to compute an approximation of the operator and its corresponding spectrum. Instead of choosing the list of functionals directly, it can be impl
