Development of a headgear-based eye protection device for physicians performing fluoroscopy-guided bronchoscopy.

Fluoroscopy-guided bronchoscopy is an essential tool for diagnosing and treating lung diseases, particularly lung cancer. However, prolonged fluoroscopic exposure raises concerns regarding radiation-induced lens injuries in physicians, such as radiation cataracts. In response to the International Commission on Radiological Protection lowering the occupational lens dose limit to an average of 20 mSv/year over 5 years, there is an increasing need for effective lens protection during such procedures. This study has aimed to develop a novel lens protection device specifically designed for bronchos

Eye lens in aging and diabetes: effect of quercetin.

Old age is accompanied by a number of pathological eye conditions. Cataract is the most common age-related eye complication. Because the lens becomes naturally more opaque over time, aging is the most important risk factor for developing cataract, which is a major cause of blindness in the world. Cataractogenesis is also one of the earliest secondary complications of diabetes mellitus. The lens is a closed system with limited capability to repair or regenerate itself. Current evidence supports the view that cataractogenesis is a multifactorial process. Oxidative stress and its sequelae are cle

Impact of contact lenses on the ocular surface microbiome, tear proteome, and dry eye disease.

Although contact lens wear is widespread and known to affect the ocular surface, its impact on the ocular surface microbiome (OSM) remains poorly understood, with existing studies reporting conflicting findings. Additionally, the relationship between contact lens wear, tear proteome, and dry eye disease (DED) is unclear. In this study, we aimed to characterize the OSM (via whole-metagenome shotgun sequencing) and the tear proteome of 25 contact lens wearers and 23 age- and sex-matched controls. The dominant phyla were Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes, with Cutibacterium acnes bei

Pathogenesis of contact lens-associated microbial keratitis.

Sight-threatening microbial keratitis associated with contact lens wear remains a serious concern for patients, eye-care practitioners, and the contact lens industry. Several decades of research and some major advances in lens and solution technology have not resulted in a decline in disease incidence. Here, we offer a perspective on the complex pathogenesis of microbial keratitis, the factors that have prevented a better understanding of this disease, and new approaches being used to tackle this important clinical problem.

Prolonged follow-up on lenalidomide-based treatment for mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALT lymphoma)-Real-world data from the Medical University of Vienna.

Based on results of two pilot trials, lenalidomide (LEN) was found to be active and safe as monotherapy and showed an increased response rate of 80% in combination with rituximab (R) for patients with mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. While initial results were promising, there are currently no data on long-term outcome, and larger international phase II/III trials on LEN for indolent lymphoma lack specific subgroup analyses. Thus, we have systematically analyzed 50 patients treated with LEN-based therapy (LEN-monotherapy n = 16, R-LEN n = 34) at the Medical University of Vien

A wearable device to monitor ocular comfort.

PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a wearable device (the lens awareness logger, LAL) to record subjective lens awareness during contact lens wear. METHODS: The LAL is a compact electronic event-logging device incorporating a tactile switch and belt-clip. Forty contact lens wearers (20 symptomatic and 20 asymptomatic) took part in a clinical evaluation of the LAL device. Subjects were instructed to wear their habitual soft contact lenses for 2 days (>8 h wear) and use the LAL device. Subjects activated the LAL device immediately prior to lens application and deactivated it following lens remova

[Risk factors of primary angle closure glaucoma].

Primary angle closure glaucoma is one of the common diseases causing blindness. The pathogenesis inducing primary angle closure glaucoma has not been entirely clear. Traditionally identified risk factors include shallow anterior chamber, short axial length and thicker lens. Recent studies begin to pay attention to other new risk factors, not only including static anatomical factors, such as anterior chamber volume, iris curvature and lens vault, but also including dynamic changing factors, such as dynamic dilation of iris volume and choroidal effusion. Comprehensive assessment of these risk fa

Lens dislocation has a possible relationship with laser iridotomy.

We report our recent experience of four eyes with spontaneous lens dislocation in four patients with no history of trauma or any systemic disease associated with zonular dialysis. Lens dislocation developed with 0.5 to 6 months following laser iridotomy. All patients were male and two eyes were complicated with acute primary angle closure glaucoma preoperatively. Case 1 showed bilateral lens dislocation, while cases 2 and 3 involved unilateral lens dislocation. Cases 2 and 3 showed lenses completely dislocated into the vitreous cavity. All cases needed lens removal and scleral fixation of intr

Lens luxation in the dog and cat.

Dislocation, or luxation, of the lens arises as a result of rupture of the zonular fibers, which suspend the lens from the ciliary body. In the dog, lens luxation is most frequently encountered as a primary, heritable condition in which there appears to be an inherent weakness of the zonule. The condition is limited mainly to the Terrier breeds but has also been described in the Tibetan Terrier and Border Collie. The disease is essentially bilateral but seldom becomes apparent clinically before 3 or after 7 years of age. In most primary luxations, the lens passes into the anterior chamber and

[A clinico-pathological case report of necrotizing ulcerating keratopathy due to topical anaesthetic abuse].

BACKGROUND: Topical anesthetic abuse is rare, but difficult to diagnose since most patients deny its use and the clinical changes are very similar to other corneal diseases. CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old medical doctor with a 30-year history of soft contact lens wear and recurrent corneal erosion was admitted to our clinic with a ring-shaped keratitis and intense ocular pain. A corneal smear was negative for bacterial infections and acanthamoeba but the contact lens box contained a few dead acanthamoeba and many cocci. Due to the clinical findings and the acanthamoeba found in the contact lens b

Oxygen transfer in the human cornea: Sensitivity and error-propagation analyses incorporating an oxygen-tension-dependent diffusion coefficient.

Eye diseases and prolonged contact-lens wear can decrease the corneal oxygen diffusion that is essential to metabolic reactions in the human eye. Measuring oxygen diffusion in the cornea is challenging because it is thin (∼500 μm) and its viability must be maintained. An innovative in vivo technique involves placing a contact lens on the corneal surface and its tear film. The inner surface of the contact lens is coated with a photosensitive dye that responds to the oxygen tension by phosphorescence quenching. Corneal properties such as the oxygen diffusion coefficient, maximum oxygen-consumpti

Smart contact lens containing hyaluronate-rose bengal conjugate for biophotonic myopia vision correction.

As the collagen layer weakens with increasing age or certain diseases such as keratoconus and myopia, the mechanical property of the collagen layer decreases with corneal deformation. To circumvent these problems, the corneal collagen has been crosslinked with the photosensitizer riboflavin under UV light after de-epithelialization. However, this treatment with riboflavin and UV light can cause notable damage to the eye. Here, the biocompatible rose bengal (RB) dye was conjugated to hyaluronic acid (HA) to enhance the corneal permeability, which can be activated by safe green light with a wave
