Selection of Annonaceae Species for the Control of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Metabolic Profiling of Duguetia lanceolata Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.

This study was performed to investigate the activity of 19 dichloromethane-soluble fractions obtained from the methanolic extracts of 10 Annonaceae species against the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith). The stem bark of Duguetia lanceolata A. St.-Hil. showed the highest insecticidal activity, with a median lethal time (LT50) of 61.4 h and a median lethal concentration (LC50) of 946.5 µg/ml of diet. The dichloromethane-soluble fractions from six D. lanceolata specimens were subjected to evaluation of their activities against S. frugiperda and metabolomic analysis using hydrogen

Optimization of X-ray irradiation dose and cold storage conditions for substerile Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to be employed in sterile insect program.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) represents an environmentally benign pest management strategy. Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a highly polyphagous pest, poses a significant threat to global agricultural productivity. To enable effective SIT implementation, we determined the optimal X-ray irradiation dose required to induce near-complete sterility across parental and F1 generations while evaluating the cold storage tolerance of irradiated pupae. This study lays a critical foundation for integrating sterile S. litura into field-based suppression programs. Our results

Investigation on the insecticidal activities of cyanobacterial extracts as an alternative source for the management of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The Spodoptera frugiperda is a notorious pest with a broad host range. It severely damages crops, mainly in areas of the globewhere maize and sorghum are grown. The pest is difficult to control due to its adaptive nature and resistance to several insecticides available in the market. So, an identification of the alternative strategy is the prime important in the present context. Insecticidal activities of cyanobacterial extracts were evaluated in the laboratory as a biocomponent against S. frugiperda. The crude extracts of Nostoc muscorum and Spirulina sp. were prepared by using ethanol, metha

Regional Variation in Captures of Male Paralobesia viteana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Monitoring Traps in Michigan Is Not Due to Geographical Variation in Male Response to Pheromone.

Paralobesia viteana (Clemens), grape berry moth, is a major pest of grapes in Eastern North America. There is substantial regional variation in the response of male P. viteana to sex pheromone-baited monitoring traps in Michigan vineyards. Males are readily captured in traps in the southwest region, whereas in the northwest very few males are captured, despite larval infestation in grapes in both regions. Y-tube olfactometers and field experiments determined the response of male moths from northern and southern populations to the pheromone blend used in monitoring lures and to females from bot

The effect of pyriproxyfen on the concentration of circulating metabolic fuel molecules and chemical elements in the hemolymph of Acraea horta L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae): A quantitative analysis.

Many pollinating insects expand their niche to adjacent agricultural areas and are, therefore, exposed to chemical insecticides. Acraea horta L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) is a pollinator butterfly widely distributed in the Southern African region. The objectives of this work were to evaluate carbohydrate, lipid and chemical elements in the hemolymph of A. horta exposed to pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone analog (JHA). Last instar larvae (L6: day 1 or day 2) were topically exposed to an aqueous solution of pyriproxyfen (100 μg of the active ingredient per insect) or to diluent (control group).

Morphological and molecular characterization of Brazilian populations of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and the evolutionary relationship among species of Diatraea Guilding.

The sugarcane borer or corn stalk borer, Diatraea Guilding is polyphagous insect pest of many important crops such as corn, sorghum and sugarcane. Losses arising from the attack of Diatraea species have been a serious problem, which may cause loss in sugarcane production around 0.25% in sugar, 0.20% in alcohol and 0.77% of body weight for every 1% infestation and up to 21% in corn production fields. In Brazil, the most commonly reported species are Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) and Diatraea impersonatella (Walker, 1863) (= D. flavipennella). However, multiple other species of Diatraea

Mutation (G275E) of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor α6 subunit is associated with high levels of resistance to spinosyns in Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta, now a major pest of tomato crops worldwide, is primarily controlled using chemical insecticides. Recently, high levels of resistance to the insecticide spinosad have been described in T. absoluta populations in Brazil. Selection of a resistant field-collected strain led to very high levels of resistance to spinosad and cross-resistance to spinetoram, but not to other insecticides that target the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). In this study the mechanisms underlying resistance to spinosad were investigated using toxicological, biochemical and mole

Larval movement and survival of western corn rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and European corn borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) on short-stature corn and tall corn.

Short-stature corn is approximately 60 cm shorter than conventional corn at maturity and is expected to soon be commercially available in the United States. One advantage of short-stature corn is lodging resistance, which should help facilitate its adoption by producers. However, knowledge gaps exist concerning how insect pests interact with short-stature corn. Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, and European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner, are important pests of corn in the United States. To manage these pests, transgenic corn producing insecticidal toxins de

Structural characterization and biological implications of sulfated N-glycans in a serine protease from the neotropical moth Hylesia metabus (Cramer [1775]) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae).

Contact with the urticating setae from the abdomen of adult females of the neo-tropical moth Hylesia metabus gives rise to an urticating dermatitis, characterized by intense pruritus, generalized malaise and occasionally ocular lesions (lepidopterism). The setae contain a pro-inflammatory glycosylated protease homologous to other S1A serine proteases of insects. Deglycosylation with PNGase F in the presence of a buffer prepared with 40% H2 (18)O allowed the assignment of an N-glycosylation site. Five main paucimannosidic N-glycans were identified, three of which were exclusively α(1-6)-fucosyl

A new species of Feltia Walker, 1856 from southern Brazil highlands with a re-description of Feltia gypaetina (Guenée, 1852) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Noctuinae).

A new species of Feltia Walker, 1856, Feltia pala Dias, Specht & San Blas sp. nov., is described from the southern Brazilian highlands. The new species is compared with Feltia gypaetina (Guenée, 1852), a neglected similar species which occurs in lowland Brazil and Argentina, and was recently transferred from Agrotis Ochsenheimer, 1816. Feltia gypaetina is redescribed, its taxonomy reviewed. Agrotis pseudoplecta Snellen, 1879 is removed from junior subjective synonymy with Agrotis gypaetina Guenée, 1852 and recognized provisionally as a junior subjective synonym of Noctua lutescens Blanchard, 1

Polyphyly of Lichen-cryptic Dagger Moths: synonymy of Agriopodes Hampson and description of a new basal acronictine genus, Chloronycta, gen. n. (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae).

The taxonomic composition and systematic position of Agriopodes Hampson is examined through an integrated approach using adult and larval morphology, biology, and molecular sequence data. The type-species of Agriopodes, Moma fallax Herrich-Schäffer is shown to be derived within the Acronicta grisea Walker species-group; accordingly, Agriopodes is relegated to synonymy under Acronicta Ochsenheimer, syn. n. (Acronictinae). Additionally, molecular markers and morphology show that Agriopodes is not monophyletic: Agriopodes tybo (Barnes) is not closely related to A. fallax nor to Acronicta, and is

Response to a Synthetic Pheromone Source by OX4319L, a Self-Limiting Diamondback Moth (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) Strain, and Field Dispersal Characteristics of its Progenitor Strain.

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a global pest that infests vegetable and field crops within the Brassica family. A genetically engineered strain of P. xylostella, OX4319L, carrying a 'self-limiting' gene, has shown potential for managing P. xylostella populations, using sustained releases of OX4319L male moths. In order for such a strain to provide control, the transgenic individuals must exhibit attraction to female P. xylostella sex pheromone and adequate dispersal in the field. In this study, we tested these key traits. First, we compared the resp

Comparing the Use of Laboratory-Reared and Field-Collected Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Larvae for Demonstrating Efficacy of Postharvest Cold Treatments in Citrus Fruit.

Some of South Africa's export markets require postharvest cold treatment of citrus fruit for phytosanitary risk mitigation for Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). An alternative to a standalone cold treatment may be a reduced intensity cold treatment as a step in a systems approach. For cold treatment trials, large numbers of larvae are required. Due to recent dramatic improvement of T. leucotreta control in the field, sufficient naturally infested citrus fruit are no longer available. Artificial infestation of fruit is not viable due to rapid decay of the fruit. Con
