Congenital zika syndrome and family impacts: an integrative review.

In 2015, a range of congenital anomalies resulting from mother-to-child transmission of the zika virus emerged. Later called congenital zika syndrome (CZS), the condition includes microcephaly. Since then, around 4,000 children have been affected in 27 countries, with Brazil accounting for the largest proportion of cases. Family caregivers have also been affected. This study analyzes the literature on caregivers of children with CZS and how the disease has affected their everyday lives. We conducted an integrative review using the PubMed, Virtual Health Library, and Embase databases. Thirty-on

[DNA-based prediction of human phenotypic traits for the medico-legal and forensic purposes].

This study aims to present the current state of knowledge on the DNA-based prediction of human externally visible characteristics of an unknown person based on the crime scene biological material left behind. This DNA sample is referred to as a “biological witness” and the procedure itself is called forensic DNA phenotyping (FDP). The analytic part of this work is based on scholarly articles published between 2015 and 2021. The electronic search of relevant references was conducted according to the PRISMA methodology in March 2021 at EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) at the Adam Mickiewicz Univers

Ophthalmic abnormalities in children with Down syndrome.

A comprehensive review of the available literature was performed to determine the common ophthalmic disorders in children aged 0 to 16 years with Down syndrome. The UK National Library for Health interface was used to search seven electronic databases, including MEDLINE and EMBASE. Terms related to Down syndrome, ophthalmology, and pediatrics were combined in the search strategy, which yielded 230 articles. Application of exclusion criteria left 23 articles to include in the review. Literature synthesis demonstrated that children with Down syndrome are at risk for several ocular disorders. Ref

The prevalence of Implanon discontinuation and associated factors among Ethiopian women: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Implanon discontinuation before the recommended time is problematic, as it puts women at risk of unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions, along with negative maternal health outcomes. Although the magnitude and determinants of Implanon discontinuation have been studied in Ethiopia, the results were inconsistent, with significant variability. Hence, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at estimating the pooled prevalence of Implanon discontinuation and its determinants in Ethiopia. METHODS: A comprehensive search of studies published before 18 February 2022 was done usi

Prevalence of asymptomatic malaria and associated factors in Ethiopia: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Active detection of asymptomatic malaria cases and resolution of associated factors are essential for malaria elimination. There are no nationwide estimates for asymptomatic malaria and associated factors in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aims to generate comprehensive and conclusive evidence from various studies conducted in Ethiopia. Published articles from various electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHL, Scopes, Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, and African Journals Online were accessed. Also, unpublished studies from Addis Ababa digital library were identified. All

Mapping intellectual structure and research hotspots of cancer studies in primary health care: A machine-learning-based analysis.

In the contemporary fight against cancer, primary health care (PHC) services hold a significant and critical position within the healthcare system. This study, as one of the most detailed investigations into cancer research in primary care, comprehensively evaluates cancer studies from the perspective of PHC using bibliometric techniques and machine learning. The dataset for the analyses was sourced from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database on March 20, 2024. The Bibliometrix package within the R programming environment, alongside the Biblioshiny application, and VOSViewer softwar

Factors of caregiver support under integrated care for older adults in rural areas: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Rapid population aging has increased the demand for integrated care for older adults, particularly in rural areas where older adults frequently experience chronic illness, frailty, and limited access to healthcare. Caregivers, both formal and informal, play a central role in supporting the wellbeing of older adults but often face substantial physical, emotional, and financial burdens. Understanding caregiver support is therefore essential to strengthening integrated care for rural older adult populations. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors influencing caregiver support within integrat

Mental health burden among survivors of sexual-exploitation trafficking: a global systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression.

PURPOSE: Survivors of trafficking for sexual exploitation endure sustained violence, coercion and isolation, yet the resulting psychiatric burden has not been reliably quantified across global settings. We aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of mental-health disorders among survivors, to test whether geographical region, exploitation modality or gender explains variation between studies, and to establish how comprehensively the existing literature reports survivors' help-seeking and the structural determinants of their care. METHODS: We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, PsycINFO, C

Blood-borne virus testing in European emergency departments: current evidence and service considerations.

Innovative testing approaches are needed to meet global targets for the blood-borne viruses (BBVs) HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). We conducted a systematic review of BBV testing in emergency departments (EDs) in Europe to evaluate prevalence, effectiveness of ED testing and linkage to care (LTC). We searched PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library for articles on ED BBV testing published between January 2012 and July 2022. Studies conducted outside Europe or prior to 2012 were excluded owing to epidemiological and healthcare service variation, together with studies that

Preparing occupational therapy students for practice in rural areas: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Despite greater needs in rural areas, occupational therapists are maldistributed to urban spaces which limits service access and health outcomes for rural people and communities. Preparation of students for rural practice may improve rural workforce recruitment and retention; however, the range and scope of preparation strategies employed by education providers are unclear. This scoping review aims to understand and describe the range of strategies education services use to prepare occupational therapy students for rural practice across the globe. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study

Patient-reported outcome measures in palliative care: A systematic review to inform health policy and health system performance.

BACKGROUND: Health systems increasingly recognise palliative care as an essential component of universal health coverage. Assessing palliative care quality and value remains challenging, as key outcomes are often missed by routine indicators. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can address this gap, but their use remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise evidence on patient-reported outcomes in palliative care, the PROMs used to measure them, and implementation barriers and facilitators. METHODS: Five databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library were s

Global Patterns of Visual Disability and Low Vision Aid Prescription: A Systematic Review.

Visual disability remains a major global public health challenge, particularly among individuals with irreversible ocular diseases where medical or surgical treatment cannot restore functional vision. Low-vision rehabilitation (LVR), including the prescription of low-vision aids (LVAs), plays a critical role in optimizing residual vision and improving quality of life; however, patterns of visual disability and LVA utilization vary widely across populations and healthcare settings. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines to evaluate patterns of visual disa
