Tissue cyst stages are an intriguing aspect of the developmental cycle and transmission of species of Sarcocystidae. Tissue-cyst stages of Toxoplasma, Hammondia, Neospora, Besnoitia, and Sarcocystis contain many infectious stages (bradyzoites). The tissue cyst stage of Cystoisospora (syn. Isospora) possesses only 1 infectious stage (zoite), and is therefore referred to as a monozoic tissue cyst (MZTC). No tissue cyst stages are presently known for members of Nephroisospora. The present report examines the developmental biology of MZTC stages of Cystoisospora Frenkel, 1977 . These parasites cau

Scabies is a contagious parasitic dermatitis that is a significant cause of morbidity, especially outside of the United States. Scabies is diagnosed most often by correlating clinical suspicion with the identification of a burrow. Although scabies should be on the differential for any patient who presents with a pruritic dermatosis, clinicians must consider a wide range of diagnostic possibilities. This approach will help make scabies simultaneously less over- and underdiagnosed by clinicians in the community. Atypical or otherwise complex presentations may necessitate the use of more definiti

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a tropical disease caused by worms of the genus Schistosoma. It is endemic in the Caribbean Islands, the middle east, eastern Asia, South America, and Africa. In nonendemic areas, physicians should be aware of this condition in travelers returning from endemic areas and in immigrants. The main disease-causing species are Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma mansoni, and Schistosoma japonicum. Neuroschistosomiasis is an ectopic form of the disease that is mainly associated with S. japonicum infection. Involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in S. mansoni i

The genus Cryptosporidium is composed of protozoan parasites that infect epithelial cells in the microvillus border of the gastrointestinal tract of all classes of vertebrates, and cause severe diarrheal disease in a variety of neonatal animals, children and immunocompromised persons. Establishment of Cryptosporidium infected animal models and its in vitro cultivation system have established a good foundation for characterizing life cycle stage, exploring immunological mechanism, developing vaccines, screening and evaluating potential drugs, as well as assessing oocyst inactivation techniques.

Entomophthoralean mycoses are of general importance in the natural control of aphids, but mechanisms involved in their dissemination are poorly understood. Despite several possible means of fungal survival, the dispersal of the mycoses in aphids has never been related to the flight of their migratory alates that are able to locate suitable host plants. In this study, aphid-pathogenic fungi proved to be widely disseminated among various aphids by their alates through migratory flight based on the following findings. First, up to 36.6% of the 7139 migratory alates (including nine species of vege

The present study describes the complete in vitro development of Cryptosporidium parvum (cattle genotype) in RPMI-1640 maintenance medium devoid of host cells. This represents the first report in which Cryptosporidium is shown to multiply, develop and complete its life cycle without the need for host cells. Furthermore, cultivation of Cryptosporidium in diphasic medium consisting of a coagulated new born calf serum base overlaid with maintenance medium greatly increased the total number of Cryptosporidium stages. Type I and II meronts were detected giving rise to two morphologically different

Knowledge of the population dynamics of parasites and their hosts is essential to build veterinary and health programs. The example chosen is that of Fasciola hepatica, a food-borne trematode responsible for severe human and animal infections on the five continents. In this paper, we review the relationships between the liver fluke and its intermediate (mollusc) and definitive (vertebrate) hosts.

The taxonomic status of the extraintestinal piscine coccidium Calyptospora funduli is based in part on its requirement of an intermediate host (the daggerblade grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio). In the present study, grass shrimp fed livers of Gulf killifish (Fundulus grandis) infected with sporulated oocysts of C. funduli exhibited numerous sporozoites suspended in the intestinal contents when fresh squash preparations were examined by light microscopy. Using this method, sporozoites were not seen in intestinal epithelial cells of the grass shrimp or in any other cell types. Ultrastructural ex

Host-parasite interactions occur at a number of stages during the process of infection with Cryptosporidium. Until recently, very little was known about the molecular basis of these interactions or of specific parasite and host molecules involved in them. Within the past decade significant advances have been made in our understanding of Cryptosporidium host-parasite interactions and in identifying molecules involved in them. However, with most interactions the story is far from complete and a number of gaps remain to be filled. This chapter reviews the existing knowledge of the molecular basis

Amastigotes are the replicative intracellular life cycle stage of the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. They have the ability to proliferate in any nucleated mammalian cell. A greater understanding of amastigote biology would greatly aid drug development since this life cycle stage is the principal target of chemotherapy. Reports have linked recrudescence following drug treatment with the possible existence of a quiescent amastigote phenotype. However, the lack of a rapid and straightforward method for isolating amastigotes from infected host cells ha

Malaria, caused by Plasmodium species, is one of the most widespread illnesses globally, affecting millions of individuals each year. The complex life cycle of these parasites requires a multifaceted approach from the human immune system to respond to infection. Additionally, Plasmodium parasites have coevolved in primates and developed numerous immune evasion mechanisms to escape human immune defenses. Here, we provide an up-to-date review of the human immune responses to blood-stage malaria, as well as the parasite immune evasion mechanisms during this part of the life cycle.

The development of parasite cultures has long been pivotal in advancing parasitology, with broad applications in medicine, veterinary science, and biology. Laboratory cultures are invaluable tools for studying parasite biology, host-parasite interactions, and the development of treatments and vaccines. However, cultures of digenean trematodes under laboratory conditions remain a challenging yet critical endeavour in parasitology. These parasites hold significant importance to both human health and ecological systems. Nevertheless, trematodes exhibit a complex life cycle involving multiple host

The protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, also called American trypanosomiasis. This neglected tropical disease affects millions of individuals across the Americas. To complete its life cycle, T. cruzi parasitizes both vertebrate hosts and its vector, commonly known as the 'kissing bug'. The parasite's survival and proliferation strategies are driven by the diverse environments it encounters. Despite being described by Carlos Chagas in 1909, significant knowledge gaps persist regarding the parasite's various life forms and adaptive capabilities in respo

This study was conducted to determine how reducing the parasite burden in a definitive host may affect the prevalence in intermediate hosts. Here we used the eyeworm Oxyspirura petrowi and cecal worm Aulonocephalus pennula as model species. Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) were provided an anthelmintic medicated feed in wild systems because of convincing evidence that these parasites were suppressing their populations. Eyeworm and cecal worm prevalence were measured in Orthopterans, which act as intermediate hosts, using polymerase chain reaction. Individuals were collected from a

UNLABELLED: Two growth modes have been described for the filamentous Streptomyces bacteria. Their classic developmental life cycle culminates in the formation of dormant spores, where movement to new environments is mediated through spore dispersal. In contrast, exploratory growth proceeds as a rapidly expanding vegetative mycelium that leads to extensive surface colonization and is associated with the release of volatile compounds that promote alkalinization (and reduced iron bioavailability) of its surrounding environment. Here, we report that exploratory growth in Streptomyces venezuelae ca

The nuclear receptor ssDAF-12 has been recognized as the key molecular player regulating the life cycle of the nematode parasite Strongyloides stercoralis. ssDAF-12 ligands permit the receptor to function as an on/off switch modulating infection, making it vulnerable to therapeutic intervention. In this study, we report the design and synthesis of a set of novel dafachronic acid derivatives, which were used to outline the first structure-activity relationship targeting the ssDAF-12 receptor and to unveil hidden properties shared by the molecular shape of steroidal ligands that are relevant to

The cornea is a hormone-responsive tissue that responds to changing levels of female sex hormones. This review focuses on the structural and functional changes in the human cornea associated with the hormonal milestones of menarche, pregnancy, and menopause, as well as consequences stemming from the use of exogenous sex hormones for fertility control and replacement. Articles were identified by searching PubMed without language or region restrictions. The primary outcomes evaluated were changes in central corneal thickness (CCT), intraocular pressure (IOP), and quality of the ocular tear film.

Furcocercariae of the genus Neodiplostomum Railliet, 1919 (Diplostomidae Poirier, 1886) were found in freshwater snails Helicorbis sujfunensis Starobogatov, 1957 (Planorbidae Rafinesque, 1815) collected from three localities in the Russian southern Far East. For the trematodes from each locality, frogs played the role of the second intermediate host, and rats were the definitive host. Chickens were insusceptible to infection. The morphological and molecular data obtained for these trematodes indicated they were representatives of the same species. The experimentally-derived adult individuals w

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted intestinal nematode with a complex life cycle that primarily affects humans, non-human primates, dogs, and occasionally cats. This study presents, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of S. stercoralis infection and its genotyping in a domestic dog from Argentina.
METHODS: The patient was a female wired-haired Teckel dog exhibiting recurrent coughing. Coproparasitological analysis using the Baermann technique revealed the presence of rhabditiform larvae morphologically compatible with S. stercoralis. To confirm this finding,
