A genome-wide data assessment of the African lion (Panthera leo) population genetic structure and diversity in Tanzania.

The African lion (Panthera leo), listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (Appendix II of CITES), is mainly impacted by indiscriminate killing and prey base depletion. Additionally, habitat loss by land degradation and conversion has led to the isolation of some subpopulations, potentially decreasing gene flow and increasing inbreeding depression risks. Genetic drift resulting from weakened connectivity between strongholds can affect the genetic health of the species. In the present study, we investigated the evolutionary history of the species at different spa

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in mainland and sub-Antarctic New Zealand sea lion (Phocarctos hookeri) populations.

AIMS: To investigate the seroprevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos hookeri), as a potential contributor to reproductive failure. METHODS: Archived sera were sourced from New Zealand sea lions from two recolonising mainland populations in the Otago Peninsula (n=15) and Stewart Island (n=12), as well as a declining population at Enderby Island (n=28) in the New Zealand sub-Antarctic. Sera were tested for antibodies to T. gondii using a commercially available ELISA (with samples considered positive if the sample to positive ratio was >30%), and latex

Septicaemia and meningitis caused by infection of New Zealand sea lion pups with a hypermucoviscous strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae.

This study describes a syndrome of neonatal septicemia and meningitis in New Zealand sea lions, caused by a strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae that is phenotypically similar to strains causing environmentally-acquired septicemia and neuro-invasive disease in humans. Between late 2006 and early 2010, 123 pups from the Enderby Island breeding colony died of K. pneumoniae infection, with lesions including fibrinous to fibrinosuppurative meningitis, subdural hemorrhage, septic arthritis, herniation and hemorrhage of the cerebellar vermis, lymphadenitis and cellulitis. This infection was responsible f

Epidemiology of hookworm (Uncinaria sanguinis) infection in free-ranging Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) pups.

Understanding the fundamental factors influencing the epidemiology of wildlife disease is essential to determining the impact of disease on individual health and population dynamics. The host-pathogen-environment relationship of the endangered Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) and the parasitic hookworm, Uncinaria sanguinis, was investigated in neonatal pups during summer and winter breeding seasons at two biogeographically disparate colonies in South Australia. The endemic occurrence of hookworm infection in Australian sea lion pups at these sites was 100% and post-parturient transmammar

Life begins when the sea lion is ashore: microhabitat use by a louse living on a diving mammal host.

Among Anoplura, the family Echinophthiriidae includes species that infest pinnipeds and otters. Previous evidence obtained from pinnipeds infested by echinophthiriids, specifically from seals, indicates that flippers are the preferred infestation sites, while lice from fur seals select areas in the pelage. We studied habitat selection of Antarctophthirus microchir on South American sea lion pups (Otaria flavescens Shaw, 1800) from Patagonia, Argentina, during the austral summer of 2009. We found a clear pattern of habitat selection: eggs are laid on the dorsal surface; nymphs 1 hatch there and

Environmental effects on the behavior of zoo-housed lions and tigers, with a case study of the effects of a visual barrier on pacing.

Tigers and lions in the wild are nocturnal nonhuman animals who may hunt and mate opportunistically during daylight hours. In captivity, they spend most time on exhibit sleeping or pacing. To better understand their activity budget, this study examined the daily behavior patterns of 2 Sumatran tigers and 3 African lions in different housings. The proportion of scans the large felids spent engaged in stereotypic pacing varied by time of day and environment. The tigers spent different amounts of time pacing when housed in different exhibits; the lions paced more in off-exhibit housing than when

Penetration of the small intestine of a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pup by adult hookworms (Uncinaria spp).

During a study on the mortality of California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pups born on San Miguel Island, California in 2002, two adult female hookworms (Uncinaria spp) were found penetrating the serosal surface of the intestinal wall and protruding into the peritoneal cavity of one pup. Documentation and a description of this unexpected finding and associated lesions are presented here. Also, adult hookworms were found in the peritoneal fluid of two other dead Z. californianus pups.

Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism in a white lion cub (Panthera leo), with concomitant radiographic double cortical line.

A captive-bred white lion cub was presented with hindquarter pain, lameness and reluctance to move. Radiographs revealed generalised osteoapenia, multiple fractures, a severely collapsed pelvic girdle, bilateral lateral bowing of the scapulae and mild kyphosis of the caudal vertebrae. A double cortical line, a distinct sign of osteopaenia, was repeatedly seen on the pelvic limbs, most strikingly along both femurs. Based on radiographic findings and a history of an exclusive meat diet since weaning, a diagnosis of nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism was made. The diet was changed to a com

The amino-acid sequences of the double-headed proteinase inhibitors from cat, lion and dog submandibular glands.

Cat and lion submandibular glands each contain a double-headed secretory proteinase inhibitor. Their amino-acid sequences were determined, and the amino-acid sequence of the inhibitor of dog submandibular glands was revised. Extensive homologies were found between these inhibitors in both domains. The trypsin-inhibiting domains of cat and lion inhibitors, however, contain a Lys residue in the reactive site in contrast to an Arg residue in the dog inhibitor. Domains I and II of cat, lion, and dog inhibitors are structurally related both to each other and to the sequenced monovalent secretory pa

Serum concentrations of oestradiol and progesterone during the normal oestrous cycle and early pregnancy in the lion (Panthera leo).

During a 6-month study period weekly serum samples demonstrated 9 oestradiol surges above 14 pg/ml (range 19-108 pg/ml) among 3 lionesses isolated from male lions. Intervals between peaks ranged from 3 to 8 weeks. Progesterone surges of more than 17 ng/ml (range 17-282 ng/ml) and lasting for 2-6 weeks were recorded after 7 of the oestradiol peaks. Sexual behaviour correlated well with the oestradiol peaks. Except for cornification following oestradiol peaks, there was no obvious vaginal cytology pattern at other times of the cycle. Pregnancy occurred after a 12-h contact with a male during beh

Exploratory Comparison of Behavior and Welfare-Related Indicators in Captive Lions (Panthera leo) Across Three Zoo Enclosures Using Machine-Learning Quantification.

Behavioral monitoring is central to welfare assessment but is difficult to conduct continuously. We used machine-learning-based video analysis to describe lion (Panthera leo) behavior across three zoo enclosures differing in available space, structural complexity and social composition. Interpretation of the Aalborg Zoo profile is additionally constrained by a major recent social change, as the enclosure's adult male was euthanized five days before data collection began. Continuous recordings collected over 10 days were processed with LabGym, filtered for low-confidence predictions and likely

Ingestion of high-pressure hose fragments and their possible association with a suspected toxic syndrome in two African lions (Panthera leo).

Foreign body ingestion is a commonly observed condition in domestic felines and, to a lesser extent, in captive wild felids. This report describes two cases of high-pressure hose ingestion in African lions (Panthera leo) and explores a possible association with a toxic syndrome. Two African lions, a three-year-old male (Case 1) and a ten-year-old female (Case 2), housed in the same enclosure, exhibited neurological signs suggestive of toxic syndrome. The male (Case 1) initially presented with ataxia, loss of pelvic limb tone and sialorrhea, showing only a mild response to clinical treatment. D

Health status, infection and disease in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) studied using a canine microarray platform and machine-learning approaches.

Conservation biologists face many challenges in assessing health, immune status and infectious diseases in protected species. These challenges include unpredictable sample populations, diverse genetic and environmental backgrounds of the animals, as well as the practical, legal and ethical issues involved in experimentation. The use of whole genome scale transcriptomics with animal samples obtained in a minimally invasive manner is an approach that shows promise for health assessment. In this study we assessed the utility of a microarray to identify changes in gene expression predictive of hea

Longitudinal Monitoring of Abscess Microbiota in a Wild California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus) Using Next-Generation Sequencing.

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing threat to human and animal health and is recognized as a global One Health issue. Strategies to reduce its impact include judicious usage of antibiotics guided by accurate bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) offers a DNA-based diagnostic approach that profiles the bacteria microbiota and can help support more informed antibiotic selection. We utilized NGS to identify Fusobacterium gonidiaformans in the neck abscess of a wild California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) undergoing rehabilitation. Initi

Ecobiology of Haemagogus leucocelaenus arbovirus vector in the golden lion tamarin translocation area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Significant pathogens that have resurfaced in humans originate from transmission from animal to human populations. In the Americas, yellow fever cases in humans are usually associated with spillover from non-human primates via mosquitoes. The present study characterized the prevalence of the yellow fever vector Haemagogus leucocelaenus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Atlantic Forest fragment chosen is an area of translocation of the golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), where 10 ovitraps were installed to collect mosquito eggs in Fazenda Três Irmãos, at Silva Jardim city, from March 202

In Like a Lamb; Out Like a Lion: Marching CAR T Cells Toward Enhanced Efficacy in B-ALL.

Combining synthetic biology with adoptive T-cell transfer has led to promising advances in the treatment of relapsed/refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (R/R B-ALL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). Chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) are synthetic receptors that redirect T-cell specificity against cancer. CARs include "built-in" signaling domains that reprogram T-cell metabolism, enhance effector function, and support long-term persistence. Despite their success in blood-based malignancies, relapse can occur in CD19-redirected CAR T-cell therapie

Trichinella nelsoni and Trichinella T8 mixed infection in a lion (Panthera leo) of the Kruger National Park (South Africa).

In South Africa, Trichinella sp. was first discovered in 1966 in the wildlife of the Kruger National Park (KNP). Since then, both Trichinella T8 and Trichinella nelsoni have been detected in the KNP, leading to a debate on the existence of a gene flow between the two taxa. In 2006-2008, four lions were killed in the Manyeleti Game Reserve, the Mthethomusha Nature Reserve, Numbi Gate, and Skukuza, which border the KNP. Larvae were isolated from muscles by artificial digestion. The molecular identification of single larva by multiplex PCR, followed by a specific PCR to distinguish between Trichi
