Phase of firing does not reflect temporal order in sequence memory of humans and recurrent neural networks.

The temporal order of a sequence of events has been thought to be reflected in the ordered firing of neurons at different phases of theta oscillations. Here we assess this by measuring single neuron activity (1,420 neurons) and local field potentials (921 channels) in the medial temporal lobe of 16 patients with epilepsy performing a working-memory task for temporal order. During memory maintenance, we observe theta oscillations, preferential firing of single neurons to theta phase and a close relationship between phase of firing and item position. However, the firing order did not match item

Fokker-Planck diffusion maps of microglial transcriptomes reveal radial differentiation into substates associated with Alzheimer's pathology.

The identification of microglia subtypes is important for understanding the role of innate immunity in neurodegenerative diseases. Current methods of unsupervised cell type identification assume a small noise-to-signal ratio of transcriptome measurements to produce well-separated cell clusters. However, identification of subtypes can be obscured by gene expression noise, which diminishes the distances in transcriptome space between distinct cell types, blurs boundaries, and reduces reproducibility. Here we use Fokker-Planck (FP) diffusion maps to model cellular differentiation as a stochastic

Learning the hierarchical organization of the frontal lobe with differential causal effects.

In this video article, accompanying the paper "An approach to learning the hierarchical organization of the frontal lobe", we discuss a data driven approach to learning brain connectivity. Hierarchical models of brain connectivity are useful to understand how the brain can process sensory information, make decisions, and perform other high-level tasks. Despite extensive research, understanding the structure of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) remains a crucial challenge. In this work, we propose an approach to studying brain signals and uncovering characteristics of the underlying neural circuity,

The spectral slope as a marker of excitation/inhibition ratio and cognitive functioning in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by neuronal and synaptic loss, resulting in an imbalance of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission and potentially cognitive impairment. Current methods for measuring the excitation/inhibition (E/I) ratio are mostly invasive, but recent research combining neurocomputational modeling with measurements of local field potentials has indicated that the slope with which the power spectrum of neuronal activity captured by electro- and/or magnetoencephalography rolls off, is a non-invasive biomarker of the E/I ratio. Transcranial Static Magnetic Stimulation Dissociates the Causal Roles of the Parietal Cortex in Spatial and Temporal Processing.

Accurate time estimation is essential for optimizing our perception and actions. Previous neuroimaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies have suggested that the right inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and supplementary motor area (SMA) are involved in time perception. However, it remains inconclusive whether the activity in these regions is crucial for time perception, partly due to the possible spread of TMS effects across anatomically connected brain regions. Such a remote effect is less likely to happen with transcranial static magnetic stimulation (tSMS), as the static magne

Effect of web inclination on debris-induced damage in Leucauge venusta webs (Araneae: Tetragnathidae).

Spiders are among the most conspicuous trap builders in nature, and the structure and orientation of spider webs are presumably under strong selection pressure. Most ecribellate orb-weavers (Araneoidea) build vertically-orientated webs (0°; ie the plane of the web is orthogonal to the ground). However, Leucauge venusta (Tetragnathidae; Walckenaer, 1842) often build horizontally-orientated webs (90°; ie parallel to the ground), despite evidence that prey capture and retention rates are higher in vertical webs. Falling debris is a common hazard for webs in the forest understory, and basic geomet

Spin Engineering of Ni-Based High-Entropy Oxide Cocatalyst: Synchronously Optimizing Intermediate Adsorption and Charge Carrier Separation for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

High-entropy materials (HEMs), as an emerging multicomponent system, exhibit significant potential in green solar energy conversion owing to their continuously tunable electronic structures. Nevertheless, the complex local chemical environments in HEMs induce significant differences in intermediate adsorption/desorption at metal active sites and complicate photoexcited electron transfer. Herein, we propose a strategy of incorporating heterogeneous transition metal Zn into a high-entropy oxide (HEO) lattice to precisely tune the spin state of Ni2+. Since the spin-state transition of Ni2+ does n

Current-Efficient Preamplifier Architecture for CMRR Sensitive Neural Recording Applications.

There are neural recording applications in which the amplitude of common-mode interfering signals is several orders of magnitude higher than the amplitude of the signals of interest. This challenging situation for neural amplifiers occurs, among other applications, in neural recordings of weakly electric fish or nerve activity recordings made with cuff electrodes. This paper reports an integrated neural amplifier architecture targeting in-vivo recording of local field potentials and unitary signals from the brain stem of a weakly electric fish Gymnotus omarorum. The proposed architecture offer

Management of complex abdominal wall defects using acellular porcine dermal collagen.

Multiple techniques have been used for the repair of complex abdominal wall defects after recurrent incisional hernias with varying rates of success. Primary repair has been associated with high recurrence rates, and prosthetic mesh placement is contraindicated in contaminated surgical fields. The development of biologic prostheses has changed the approach to these difficult problems. This study evaluates the management of complex abdominal wall defects using acellular porcine dermal collagen. Between August 2006 and May 2007, 18 patients underwent abdominal wall reconstruction for complex def

Synaptic contributions to focal and widespread spatiotemporal dynamics in the isolated rat subiculum in vitro.

The subiculum, which has a strategic position in controlling hippocampal activity, is receiving significant attention in epilepsy research. However, the functional organization of subicular circuits remains unknown. Here, we combined different recording and analytical methods to study focal and widespread population activity in the isolated subiculum in zero Mg2+ media. Patch and field recordings were combined to examine the contribution of different cell types to population activity. The properties of cells leading field activity were examined. Spatio-Temporal Regularization for Longitudinal Registration to Subject-Specific 3d Template.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease present subtle anatomical brain changes before the appearance of clinical symptoms. Manual structure segmentation is long and tedious and although automatic methods exist, they are often performed in a cross-sectional manner where each time-point is analyzed independently. With such analysis methods, bias, error and longitudinal noise may be introduced. Noise due to MR scanners and other physiological effects may also introduce variability in the measurement. We propose to use 4D non-linear registration with spatio-temporal regularization

A comparison of alendronate to varying magnitude PEMF in mitigating bone loss and altering bone remodeling in skeletally mature osteoporotic rats.

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) treatments stimulate bone formation activities though further work is needed to optimize its therapeutic benefit. PEMF can generate local potential gradients and electric currents that have been suggested to mimic bone electrochemical responses to load. In line with this reasoning, a recent publication reported that PEMF application on isolated bone tissue induced detectable micro-vibrations (doi:https://doi.org/10.1109/TMAG.2016.2515069). To determine the ability of PEMF to intervene in a rat model of osteoporosis, we tested its effect on trabecular and cor

Establishment of an Infrared-Camera-Based Home-Cage Tracking System Goblotrop.

Studying locomotor activity in animal models is crucial for understanding physiological, behavioral, and pathological processes. This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence-based tracking system called Goblotrop, designed to localize rodents within their laboratory environment. The Goblotrop system uses two infrared cameras to record videos of rodents in their home cages. A neural network analyzes these videos to determine the rodent's position at each time point. By tracking changes in position over time, the system provides detailed insights into rodent behavior, including speed,

A Study of Event-Related Potentials During Monaural and Bilateral Hearing in Single-Sided Deaf Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Single-sided deafness (SSD) is characterized by a profoundly deaf ear and normal hearing in the contralateral ear. A cochlear implant (CI) is the only method to restore functional hearing in a profoundly deaf ear. In a previous study, we identified that the cortical processing of a CI signal differs from the normal-hearing ear (NHE) when directly compared using an auditory oddball paradigm consisting of pure tones. However, exactly how the brain integrates the electrical and acoustic signal is not well investigated. This study aims to understand how the provision of the CI in combi

Numerical and Experimental Investigation of the Conjugate Heat Transfer for a High-Pressure Pneumatic Control Valve Assembly.

This paper uses heat transfer experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to investigate the conjugate heat transfer (CHT) in a high-pressure pneumatic control valve assembly. A heat transfer test rig was constructed, and time-temperature histories of five test points placed on the valve assembly's outer surface were recorded for study validation. The Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) CFD methods with the standard k-ε turbulence closure equations were adopted in the numerical computations. Polyhedral grids were used; time step and mesh convergence studies were

Phase-contrast helium-3 MRI of aerosol deposition in human airways.

One of the key challenges in the study of health-related aerosols is predicting and monitoring sites of particle deposition in the respiratory tract. The potential health risks of ambient exposure to environmental or workplace aerosols and the beneficial effects of medical aerosols are strongly influenced by the site of aerosol deposition along the respiratory tract. Nuclear medicine is the only current modality that combines quantification and regional localization of aerosol deposition, and this technique remains limited by its spatial and temporal resolutions and by patient exposure to radi

DCM for complex-valued data: cross-spectra, coherence and phase-delays.

This note describes an extension of Bayesian model inversion procedures for the Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) of complex-valued data. Modeling complex data can be particularly useful in the analysis of multivariate ergodic (stationary) time-series. We illustrate this with a generalization of DCM for steady-state responses that models both the real and imaginary parts of sample cross-spectra. DCM allows one to infer underlying biophysical parameters generating data (like synaptic time constants, connection strengths and conduction delays). Because transfer functions and complex cross-spectra ca

Hyperspectral computed tomographic imaging spectroscopy of vascular oxygen gradients in the rabbit retina in vivo.

Diagnosis of retinal vascular diseases depends on ophthalmoscopic findings that most often occur after severe visual loss (as in vein occlusions) or chronic changes that are irreversible (as in diabetic retinopathy). Despite recent advances, diagnostic imaging currently reveals very little about the vascular function and local oxygen delivery. One potentially useful measure of vascular function is measurement of hemoglobin oxygen content. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel method of accurately, rapidly and easily measuring oxygen saturation within retinal vessels using in vivo imaging spect

Localization-driven exchange contrast in diffusion exchange spectroscopy.

Diffusion exchange spectroscopy (DEXSY) is a method to probe exchange between domains of varying confinement. Analyses of DEXSY signals typically assume Gaussian diffusion within distinct compartments and first-order exchange kinetics between them. Other situations can yield DEXSY signal contrast with respect to mixing time, however, leading to potentially erroneous interpretation. Here, we demonstrate that a one-dimensional compartment with reflecting boundaries and without relaxation can by itself produce such contrast in certain experimental regimes. The origin of this contrast is the diffu
