Splenic marginal zone lymphoma: a distinctive type of low-grade B-cell lymphoma. A clinicopathological study of 13 cases.

The recognition and classification of the different varieties of splenic low-grade B-cell lymphomas have been hampered by the rarity of histological studies of surgical splenectomy specimens of B-cell lymphoma. In an effort to characterize the recently described splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL), we conducted a survey of 13 patients with this type of tumor using the criteria defined by Schmid for its recognition (Schmid et al., Am J Surg Pathol 1992;16:455-66). Primary splenic high-grade lymphomas, T-cell lymphomas, and secondary infiltration by other recognized low-grade B-cell lymphomas,

Primary cutaneous CD5+ marginal zone B-cell lymphoma resembling the plasma cell variant of Castleman's disease. Case report.

Marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZBL) is occasionally associated with prominent plasma cell differentiation. However, MZBL rarely exhibits histological features that resemble plasmacytoma arising from a localized plasma cell variant of Castleman's disease (PCCD). We here report a histologically similar case that was associated with primary cutaneous tumor. The patient was a 57-year-old woman with a 5-year history of cutaneous nodules. Histologically, a prominent proliferation of plasma cells occupied the interfollicular area of the central portion of the cutaneous tumor, whereas various numbers

Progression to large B-cell lymphoma in splenic marginal zone lymphoma: a description of a series of 12 cases.

Splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) is considered to be an indolent extranodal B-cell lymphoma. Despite its low aggressivity, histologic progression has been described in sporadic reports, although the frequency, characteristics, and underlying molecular abnormalities of this phenomenon are largely unknown. We review here the clinical, morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features of a series of 12 SMZL cases that showed progression to large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL). The most frequent location of secondary LBCL was in peripheral lymph node. This occurred between 12 and 85 months aft

[Molecular analysis of immunoglobulin genes in the tumor B cells in splenic marginal zone lymphoma].

AIM: To determine the immunoglobulin variable heavy chain (gVH) genes and their somatic mutations and to compare these data with the clinical and laboratory parameters of patients and the outcomes of the disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The investigation enrolled 24 patients (9 men and 15 women whose age was 32 to 77 years (median age, 60 years) with splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (SMZBCL). The latter was diagnosed on the basis of histological and immunohistochemical examinations of a bone marrow trephine biopsy specimen, immunophenotyping of peripheral lymphoid cells or bone marrow aspi

Exposure to animals and increased risk of marginal zone B-cell lymphomas of the ocular adnexae.

BACKGROUND: Ocular adnexal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (OAMZL) has been associated with Chlamydophila psittaci, an infection that may be transmitted by carrier animals. However, it is still unclear whether exposure to animals affects the risk of OAMZL in comparison with other lymphoma histotypes. We therefore investigated the role of professional and/or domestic exposures to animals in the occurrence of OAMZL, as compared with other types of lymphoma. METHODS: A hospital-based case-control study was carried out on 43 consecutive OAMZL patients (cases) and 87 consecutive patients with nodal

Unusual direct phycoerythrin labeling of B-cells from a splenic marginal zone lymphoma.

Flow cytometry is the most widely used method for lymphocyte subset characterization. Two types of antibodies, directly labeled with fluorochrome, are currently used for immunological diagnosis of B-cell lymphoproliferation: monoclonal antibodies against leukocyte differentiation antigens and polyclonal antibodies against immunoglobulins and light chains. In this study is described the case of a patient with an uncommon immunophenotyping of a B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. B-cells from peripheral blood and from bone marrow reacted positively with all the tested phycoerythrin (PE)-conjuga

Primary cutaneous marginal zone B-cell lymphomas are targeted by aberrant somatic hypermutation.

A mechanism inducing genetic instability, termed aberrant somatic hypermutation (ASHM), has been described in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. To further investigate whether ASHM also occurs in primary cutaneous marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (PCMZL), we studied the mutational profile of PAX5, RhoH/TTF, cMYC, and PIM1 in 11 PCMZLs. A total of 17 sequence variants were found in 8 of 11 lymphomas cases (72.7%), and they displayed the molecular features typical for the ASHM. Further, two mutations, one mutation in PIM1 and one in cMYC, led to amino-acid substitution with potential functional consequ

Splenic marginal zone lymphomas appear to originate from different B cell types.

Splenic marginal zone lymphomas (SMZLs) have been proposed to originate from postgerminal center memory B cells that usually have mutated immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable (VH) genes. However, the majority of SMZLs are thought to express both IgD and IgM, which is more typical of naïve B cells that have unmutated VH genes. To better define the SMZL cell of origin and pathogenesis, we studied the histological and immunophenotypic features of eight cases and also sequenced their rearranged VH genes. Half of the cases had unmutated VH genes consistent with a naïve B-cell origin and half had mut

Oligoclonality of a "composite" gastric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with areas of marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type.

We analyzed a case of oligoclonal Helicobacter pylori-associated, primary gastric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with areas of extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZBL) of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type in a 61-year-old male patient. The patient had two separate tumors, in the corpus and in the antrum, each showing two morphologically distinct components (DLBCL and MZBL of MALT type). To determine the clonal relationship between the large- and small-cell components, we microdissected four samples from morphologically distinct tumor components at both tumor sites. PC

CD5-positive marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) of the lung.

UNLABELLED: CD5-positive marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) of the lung is very rare. An 82-year-old Japanese woman was found to have an abnormal lung shadow on chest X-ray photography, and was admitted to our hospital. Imaging modalities including X-ray photography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging showed a small (2×1×1 cm) opacity of the right upper lobe. Transbronchial lung biopsy was performed. It showed severe proliferation of small lymphocytes. The small lymphocytes were centrocytes-like, and minor plasma cell differentiation

Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract sparing only the esophagus: a case report.

Lymphomas presented in any organ or tissue other than lymph nodes or the spleen are considered primary extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, and the most common non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are of the gastrointestinal tract. The most common histological subtypes are marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and typically only one to two organs are affected. Patients present with a wide variety of vague complaints, making early diagnosis problematic. Herein, we report the case of a 76-year-old male with extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphom

CD123-positive plasmacytoid dendritic cells in primary cutaneous marginal zone B-cell lymphoma: diagnostic and pathogenetic implications.

The histogenesis of primary cutaneous marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (PCMZL) has not yet been clarified. Plasma-cytoid dendritic cells (PDC) play a crucial role in the initiation of immune responses and activation of T-cells and B-cells. We analyzed the presence of PDC by immunohistochemistry in various forms of primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas and in B-cell pseudolymphomas. Clusters of CD123+PDC were observed in all PCMZL (23 of 23 cases; 100%) and in two-thirds of cutaneous B-cell pseudolymphomas (14 of 22; 64%), but only in a minority of primary cutaneous follicle center lymphoma (4 of 31;

Marginal zone B-cell lymphoma arising from buccal mucosa resembling inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the soft tissue.

We report here a case of marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZBL) arising from buccal mucosa resembling inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the soft tissue. On a low-power field, the lesion is characterized by fibrous granulation tissue and numerous lymphoid follicles with or without atrophic small germinal center. A portion of the lymphoid follicles were surrounded by partial and/or complete thin pale cuff of centrocyte-like (CCL) cells on high power field. The thin rim of the lymphoid follicles contained CCL-cells, plasma cells, cells showing plasma cell differentiation and mature eosino
