One-dimensional rough magnetic nanochains as magnetically actuated mechano-antibacterial materials.

The growing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has driven increasing interest in non-chemical antibacterial strategies that rely on physical mechanisms rather than biochemical toxicity. However, the rational construction of nanomaterials that can efficiently convert external stimuli into localized mechanical forces at bio-interfaces, while maintaining structural stability and biocompatibility, remains a major challenge. Here, we report a magnetic-field-assisted interfacial co-assembly and epitaxial growth strategy to construct a one-dimensional hierarchical magnetic nanochain with a r

Stability of corneal endothelial monolayers in the presence of magnetic particles in a rotating magnetic field.

Magnetic particles have significant potential as novel theranostics due to the relative ease of surface modification for targeting molecules or regions of diseased tissues, coupled with remote in vivo manipulation using an exogenous magnetic field. Employing magnetic particles within the eye is hindered by the lack of safety studies. In particular, our lab has developed peptide-conjugated iron-oxide magnetic particles that target and liberate pseudoexfoliation materials from anterior lens capsules under a rotating magnetic field. Further application of such a mode of therapy may hold the key t

Programming of Complex Magnetic Profiles Enforced by 4D Printed Magnetic LCE Actuators.

Magnetic soft actuators enable untethered, contact-free actuation yet they are fundamentally limited by the difficulty of programming complex, three-dimensional (3D), spatially non-uniform magnetic profiles. Here, we introduce a four-dimensional (4D) printing-enabled magnetic programming strategy that overcomes this challenge by magnetizing magnetically active liquid crystal elastomers (MLCEs) in thermally actuated target states. Digitally prescribed director architectures define deterministic 3D deformations at elevated temperature, which serve as intrinsic programming templates during magnet

Magnetic properties and electronic structure ofJeff=12square lattice quantum magnet Bi2ErO4Cl.

Two-dimensional (2D) rare-earth-based square lattice (SL) quantum magnets provide a pathway to achieve distinctive ground states characterized by unusual excitations. We investigate the magnetic, heat capacity, structural, and electronic properties of a magnetic system Bi2ErO4Cl. This compound features a structurally ideal 2D SL composed of Er3+rare-earth magnetic ions. The single-phase polycrystalline sample was synthesized using hydrothermal, followed by a vacuum-sealed tube technique. The analysis of heat capacity and magnetic data indicates that the Er3+ion adopts aJeff=12state at low temp

Nickel Ferrite Nanoparticles for In Vivo Multimodal Magnetic Resonance and Magnetic Particle Imaging.

Magnetic nanoparticles have been at the center of biomedical research for decades, primarily for their applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic particle imaging (MPI). Superparamagnetic particles, typically based on iron oxide crystals, are effective in both modalities, although each requires distinct magnetic properties for optimal performance. We investigated the performance of nanoparticles based on a nickel-substituted ferrite core and compared them to standard maghemite iron oxide nanoparticles. We synthesized γ-Fe2O3 and Ni x Fe2-x O3 nanoparticles and coated them wi

Waterborne polyurethane magnetic nanomicelles with magnetically governed functions for breast cancer therapy.

Drug delivery strategies aim to maximize a drug's therapeutic efficiency by increasing the drug's concentration at the target site while minimizing delivery to off-target tissues. There is a great deal of interest in using magnetic nanoparticles in combination with applied magnetic fields to selectively control drug accumulation and release in target tissue while minimizing effects on other tissues. In this study, a magnetic targeted drug delivery system based on waterborne polyurethane nanomicelles was prepared by encapsulating hydrophobic doxorubicin (DOX, model drug) and hydrophobic oleic a

Efficient perpendicular magnetization switching by a magnetic spin Hall effect in a noncollinear antiferromagnet.

Current induced spin-orbit torques driven by the conventional spin Hall effect are widely used to manipulate the magnetization. This approach, however, is nondeterministic and inefficient for the switching of magnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy that are demanded by the high-density magnetic storage and memory devices. Here, we demonstrate that this limitation can be overcome by exploiting a magnetic spin Hall effect in noncollinear antiferromagnets, such as Mn3Sn. The magnetic group symmetry of Mn3Sn allows generation of the out-of-plane spin current carrying spin polarization colli

Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Cholangiopancreatography of the Pancreas in Small Animals.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) have emerged as non-invasive diagnostic techniques for the diagnosis of pancreatic and pancreatic duct disorders in humans. The number of studies focused on MR and MRCP for pancreatic disease in small animals is very limited. MR has been described for the evaluation of insulinoma in dogs and to investigate pancreatitis in cats. The studies were based on a standard protocol with T2 weighted (w) fast recovery fast spin-echo (FRFSE) with and without fat suppression, T1w FSE pre-contrast and T1w FSE post-contrast with and with

Magnetically Levitated Flexible Vibration Sensors with Surficial Micropyramid Arrays for Magnetism Enhancement.

Magnetically levitated vibration sensors possess wide frequency response ranges and high sensitivity. Compared with springs and cantilevers, the levitated magnet suffers no mechanical abrasion, allowing minimized mechanical fatigue after prolonged exposure to vibration. However, magnetic levitated sensors are mostly based on fully rigid components, which are difficult to match the soft and curvilinear surface of the biological tissues and machines. Here, an innovative vibration sensor based on magnetic levitation has been developed. The proposed sensor contains two parallel magnetic membranes,

Magnetic aerosol drug targeting in lung cancer therapy using permanent magnet.

Primary bronchial cancer accounts for almost 20% of all cancer death worldwide. One of the emerging techniques with tremendous power for lung cancer therapy is magnetic aerosol drug targeting (MADT). The use of a permanent magnet for effective drug delivery in a desired location throughout the lung requires extensive optimization, but it has not been addressed yet. In the present study, the possibility of using a permanent magnet for trapping the particles on a lung tumor is evaluated numerically in the Weibel's model from G0 to G3. The effect of different parameters is considered on the effic

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging findings of the intracerebral alveolar echinococcosis.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a parasitic infestation produced by Echinococcus multilocularis. The parasite is a rare human infestation with a wide geographic distribution. It primarily affects the liver, and may spread hematogenously to produce metastatic foci in the distant organs. AE can metastise to the lungs, brain and bones. Cerebral involvement is rare but may be lethal. Cerebral AE is a rare but life-threatening parasitic disease. Here we report a 52-year-old man with cerebellar involvement of Echinococcus multilocularis.

[Magnetic resonance imaging in patients with magnetic hearing implants: overview and procedural management].

BACKGROUND: Every year in Germany approximately 3,500 patients receive a cochlear implant or other hearing implants with an implantable magnet. At the same time more and more patients are examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). For the indications and execution of this imaging modality a number of restrictions and safety measures have to be considered. METHODS: This article is based on the restrictions of the manufacturers and a selective literature search in PubMed using the following keywords: MRI compatibility/MRI safety + cochlea implant/auditory brainstem implant/Bonebridge/Carina/

Magnetite/CdTe magnetic-fluorescent composite nanosystem for magnetic separation and bio-imaging.

A new synthesis protocol is described to obtain a CdTe decorated magnetite bifunctional nanosystem via dodecylamine (DDA) as cross linker. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and fluorescence microscopy are used to characterize the constitution, size, composition and physical properties of these superparamagnetic-fluorescent nanoparticles. These CdTe decorated magnetite nanoparticles were then functionaliz

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors: magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) is a rare benign neoplasm of the central nervous system affecting young people. A correct preoperative diagnosis is helpful for planning surgical strategies and improving prognosis. The purpose of this study was to characterize DNTs using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and to analyze the value of these two techniques in the diagnosis of DNTs. METHODS: MR images of 13 patients with DNTs were reviewed retrospectively; and five of the patients also underwent MRS. Tumors were confirmed by surgery.

Limitations of magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography in the diagnosis of intracranial aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) are being used with increasing frequency for the diagnosis of intracranial aneurysms. Although the literature suggests that MRI and MRA are accurate, we have observed that both are associated with a high likelihood of false-positive results in the diagnosis of aneurysms. We prospectively evaluated and compared the accuracy of MRI/MRA versus digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for the diagnosis of intracranial aneurysms. METHODS: Over the course of 2 years, 133 patients diagnosed with one or more unruptured

Magnetic resonance imaging and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of intracranial epidermoid tumors.

Intracranial epidermoid tumors or cysts are considered benign lesions. Differentiation of epidermoid tumors from arachnoid cysts is important for appropriate patient care because the treatment is different for each lesion. Arachnoid cysts can appear very similar to epidermoid tumors on computed tomography (CT). Epidermoid tumors can grow in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) cistern, the most common location of these lesions, resulting in trigeminal neuralgia and facial paralysis. Treatment for epidermoid tumors is exclusively surgery. Arachnoid cyst, on the other hand, is a benign condition tha

Humidity-induced magnetization and magnetic pole inversion in a cyano-bridged metal assembly.

In general, magnetic properties of bulk magnetic materials are independent of the humidity of the environment. To obtain a magnetic material that has humidity-sensitive characteristics, water vapour must penetrate the lattice and act on spin sites. Nanoporous materials composed of metal-assembled complexes may be expected to display some humidity response because materials in this category can show functionalities such as gas storage and molecular recognition. Here, we demonstrate humidity-induced reversible variations in the magnetic properties of cyano-bridged cobalt(II)-manganese(II)-chromi

Role of magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography in patients with hemifacial spasm.

Vascular compression of the facial nerve is a well recognized cause of hemifacial spasm (HFS). In this study, we described the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and three-dimensional magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) techniques used and findings in 34 patients with hemifacial spasm. A vascular abnormality, defined as a vessel seen in close proximity, touching or compressing the facial nerve, was identified in 22 of the 25 patients (88%) who had both MRI and MRA studies. Vessels identified were anterior inferior cerebellar artery (59.2%), posterior inferior cerebellar artery (13.6%), vertebra
