Masseter muscle contraction and cervical muscle sensitization by nerve growth factor cause mechanical hyperalgesia in masticatory muscle with activation of the trigemino-lateral parabrachial nucleus system in female rats.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a new rat model of craniofacial myalgia, and to clarify which central nervous system pathways are activated in the model. BACKGROUND: Craniofacial myalgia, represented by myogenous temporomandibular disorder and tension-type headache with pericranial tenderness, is more common in female patients. The pain is thought to be a type of multifactorial disorder with several coexisting causes. To our knowledge, there are no models of craniofacial muscle hyperalgesia caused by multiple types of stimuli. METHODS: We injected nerve growth factor into the trapezius muscle of fem

Coronoidectomy for Alleviating Restricted Mouth Opening in Masticatory Muscle Tendon-Aponeurosis Hyperplasia: Integration With Genetic Mutation Analysis.

Masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia (MMTAH) is often misdiagnosed as temporomandibular joint disorders, hypertrophic masticatory muscles, or congenital maxillomandibular dysplasia due to overlapping clinical manifestations. This case study is aimed at elucidating a novel genetic association in MMTAH by reporting a patient with pathognomonic features, including chronic limited mouth opening, bilateral coronoid process elongation, tendon hyperplasia in the masseter and temporalis muscles, and concomitant fatty degeneration. Crucially, whole-exome sequencing of peripheral blood iden

Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of masticatory muscle changes in patients with primary trigeminal neuralgia before microvascular decompression.

Primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN) is characterized by chronic neuropathic pain. There are few studies exploring masticatory muscle changes in patients with PTN. This study evaluated the changes in the masticatory muscles using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the predictive factors of masticatory muscle changes in patients with PTN. The radiologic outcomes of 52 patients with PTN and 58 healthy adults were evaluated. The temporalis, lateral pterygoid, medial pterygoid, and masseter muscles were assessed using MRI. Atrophy and edema of the masticatory muscles were noted. Multivariate analy

A High Masticatory Muscle Tone Predicts the Risk of Malnutrition and Frailty in Inpatient Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of malnutrition among inpatient older adults is as high as 20∼50%. Masticatory performance is known to affect the nutritional status of individuals. However, an objective measurement to reflect the real status of masticatory muscle performance is lacking at the bedside. METHODS: This pilot study analyzed the masticatory performance using surface electromyography (sEMG) of masticatory muscles that measures both muscle strength and muscle tone at the bedside. The nutritional status was measured using the Mini Nutritional Assessment tool. The handgrip strength was me

Evidence for MHC I-restricted CD8+ T-cell-mediated immunopathology in canine masticatory muscle myositis and polymyositis.

Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) is the most common inflammatory myopathy (IM) in dogs, associated with antibodies against myosin. To further elucidate the immunopathogenesis, we investigated muscles of 53 dogs with MMM, 32 dogs with polymyositis (PM), and 4 dogs suffering from both, with regard to the presence and location of CD4(+) and CD8(+)T cells, B cells, macrophages, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and class II antigens, and autoantibodies. CD8(+)T cells were found in MMM (91%) and PM (75%), mostly paralleled (68% and 61%) by enhanced expression of MHC class I antigen on
